Happy Halloween everybody!

I just kicked off the holiday finishing off the series with Halloween Ends.

This movie is better on a second viewing once you know what you're in for. It was definitely a subversion but I think the addition of Corey as a central character works because there was only so much more gas in the Michael vs. Laurie tank, and that's paid off in a great way at the end. This is kind of like a No Time to Die situation for me where if we never get another Halloween movie I'd be fine with that given how this one ended. Realistically I don't know what else there is to do with the character unless they go meta with a one off like New Nightmare or something so they can finally have Michael Myers meet Mike Myers. :o

Happy Halloween, Everybody!

Weapons

The roommate and I watched this and loved it! It's high praise indeed to say that I found the film to be of a piece with IT, Super 8, and Halloween, in the sense that it's a throwback (and I mean that as a compliment) and it evokes the dread of the fantastical happening in what was once perceived to be one of the safest places to live: Small Town Anywhere USA.

The film starts of with some beautiful, folky exposition from what turns out not to be a central character, which I found somewhat unique and refreshing. After that I initially thought the film became somewhat meandering, almost as if the narrative had gotten away from Cregger. Why should I care about Julia Garner's boozy sullen schoolteacher, Alden Ehrenreich's sleazeball cop, or Austin Abrams' druggy drifter??

However, I soon learned that I had been manipulated by a master: all of these storylines pay off in gloriously demented ways by the end of the film. Amy Madigan's Aunt Gladys is a delightful pop creation, easily one of my favourite villains in recent memory. And that ending...! Weapons understands that there is a very fine line between hilarity and hysteria - the film is actually much funnier than I was expecting!

Now I really must watch Barbarian. Cregger is clearly disinterested in making 'safe' horror and I'm curious to see where his muse takes him next...
