80's Sci Fi/Action Movies Appreciation Thread

yeah! I know, the youtube video I posted works!!

You must haev edited, it didn't work before I quoted you to find the problem so I could be helpful. CFE also noticed that you made a mistake with the video and gave you instructions on how to fix it.

who turned this into the 80's sci fi action movie apprecation thread?i thought this was the Alien one

Yeah it's for the best anyway:

so here I think we should discuss:

Terminator
Robocop
Alien
Predator

and other non-comic book sci fi/action/horror films of the 80s; My favorite decade of film bar none!

I always felt that these four franchises were the cornerstones of modern science fiction, and were a breed of science fiction all their own.

Great stuff

Damn i wished they release a new SE of T2 with a long ass documentary on the whole process of making the film. Its a shame a that one of the greatest sci-fi action films of all time with groundbreaking FX only has a 30 making of. I hope that soon better than later they put together a new edition with 2hour making off with new interviews of arnie and cameron. It looks like if cameron didn't like to do interviews, I mean almosts all the videos of him are old archive footage old interviews or BTS on set footage.

I wish to see him now on a new documentary comenting on his experience and on the challenges of bringing the T-1000 to life. Yes i know he talked on the terminator dvd doc but that's it. We need a new doc for T2 I don't care, I would buy the movie again if it has new in depth special features. I'm a special features junkie what can i say:woot: but more than that if there's one film deserving this is T2. The "Ultimate" EDITION is not really the ultimate edition for me. There's still lots of things they can dig up.

The "meat and potatos" of the T2 special features are the pop-up factoids you can set in and select during the film.

That and the commentary of course.

Yeah Special Features rock.

The Alien Quadrilogy Set has, alongside LOTR, the best collection of special features.

yea i know but as you said the alien set and the LOTR dvd's did it so i think T2 can do the same. I'm not asking for a 3 Hr doc but atleast something more substancial than what they have given us so far. A more in depth look if you will I mean look at the gladiator 3-disc set. I think T2 could spawn something similar(not a 3 disc but a great ultimate doc) if artisan tries.

The LOTR DVD features go on for days!!! Oh so much fun

How about the Matrix boxset? Lots of crap in there.

Predator 2 sucked ass IMHO.
what was so different about Predator 2 that made it suck ass that wasn't in Predator 1 (other than the obvious setting and ending)? just wondering, it's your right to think they way...i'm just curious how people like part 1 but think part 2 stinks.

Yeah, I'm also curious to know why so many people dislike Predator 2. I thought it was a fun Movie. The only things I didn't like were the close ups of the Predator's face. Because he looked like a puppet to me. And Danny Glover, I just couldn't buy him as someone that could kick Predator butt.

Another GREAT 80s Science Fiction film:

Would the buffs here say that the "dystopic future" is a defining characteristic of the 80's sci fi/action flicks?

I love Pred 2, i actually watched it yesterday after posting on the PREDATOR thread. I actually though Glover did a fine job as the rogue cop, personally.

I'd say so. Aliens and Terminator are most certainly dystopic.

and Robocop, I'd say, is morally dystopic.

For me Predator 2 is weak simply because the first was THAT damn good .....

Arnies doomed team were very similar to the marines from Alien ... not much screen time but we seemed to get to know them and care for them quickly, when they started to die it had impact! The first also featured possibly Arnolds finest performance ... calm, strong ... a great leader.
The jungle remains the best environment I have seen the Predator in ... it felt and looked epic.

Moving the action to the big city just seems like a lazy choice ...... Glover is fine but having watched super-human Schwarzenegger barely escape with his life its hard to believe/accept Danny as a worthy adversary for the ultimate hunter.

It lacks any subtle moments and looks rushed .....

I enjoy Predator 2 for what it is and its far better than AVP but it is a distant second to the original.

I don't know if I'd call Terminator dystopic since it takes place in the present, well the present of 1984. A Terminator movie would be dystopic since it would be after society collapses.

He said 'dystopic future'

as in Los Angeles circa 2029
