80's Sci Fi/Action Movies Appreciation Thread

...and Robocop, I'd say, is morally dystopic.

CFE

RoboCop's world is morally dystopic, but the movie itself is meant to be a Jesus metaphor (which, as an aside, would greatly have improved Sunday School had the Gospels been like the movie).

I am all about The Abyss baby!!! There is some action lol. How about the sub fight. God I love that flick!

I liked it, my only complaint is that it turned into a completely different movie by the end.

A dude comes back form the dead and seeks revenge on the ones that killed him....

Go jesus!!!

what was so different about Predator 2 that made it suck ass that wasn't in Predator 1 (other than the obvious setting and ending)? just wondering, it's your right to think they way...i'm just curious how people like part 1 but think part 2 stinks.
Danny Glovers perfromance was awful IMHO but then again I've never been much of a fan. The movie had a very generic cop chases after moster and doesn't care if he has to try to kill it to stop it but the goverment wants to capture and study the monster story. That "concrete jungle" angle is obvious and silly and the movie was just plain boring as hell. The charm of the first picture is it's simple man v.s. monster story, the second is just a lame generic mess that has very little to do with the original. Why do movies always have to try to explain everything. Who cares if the aliens were hunting people for 100's of years? Whocares about what their spaceship looked like. The director of the first picture was right on in his comentary. The first one is something truely special and if you can't see that I can't help you. One things for sure more people rightly fondly remember the first one, the sequel isn't remembered at all...and for good reason.

I must be the only one who liked Die Hard 2 over Die Hard 3.:csad:

This movie has a special place in my heart.:woot:

cops chasing alien monsters while the government tries to capture said alien monster is generic? have you ever seen aliens? it's about a group of marines there to dispose of alien monster but the government is, in fact, trying to capture one. is that generic also?

That "concrete jungle" angle is obvious and silly and the movie was just plain boring as hell. The charm of the first picture is it's simple man v.s. monster story, the second is just a lame generic mess that has very little to do with the original.
i think the fact that the scenery was changed and that it had little to do with the original made it good. i wouldn't want to see Predator 2 in the jungle again and i wouldn't have wanted to see Arnold come back and fight another predator. i think that would've made it cheesy. making it indirectly related to the original gave the movie a sense of scope imo. it showed that not everything that the predators do on Earth is directly related to the first Predator movie. as for the concrete jungle aspect...i couldn't think of any other place to stage a sequel other than in a city. of course there are other jungles and forests and what not but that would've made Predator 2 feel like a rehash. i thought putting the Predator in a city was the obvious next step.

Why do movies always have to try to explain everything. Who cares if the aliens were hunting people for 100's of years? Whocares about what their spaceship looked like.
um...i do. those parts of the movie gave great insight into the Predator's culture and intentions.

The first one is something truely special and if you can't see that I can't help you.
um...i never said it wasn't. i never said Predator 2 was on par with part 1, but i don't think it's nearly as crappy as a lot of people (including you) try to make it out to be.

One things for sure more people rightly fondly remember the first one, the sequel isn't remembered at all...and for good reason.
there are plenty of posts that prove that statement flat out WRONG...

Yeah, I'm also curious to know why so many people dislike Predator 2. I thought it was a fun Movie.
Predator 2 is probably the most under-rated film ever. I saw it once years ago then again recently and don't remember what I had against it back in the day.
I liked Predator 2 also.
I like P1 and P2 equally, but for different reason.

...and that's just in this thread.

Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me either, but according to RoboCop Archive:

[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Geneva][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Geneva][FONT=Verdana, sans-serif, Tahoma, Helvetica, Geneva, Arial][FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, Geneva] Paul Verhoeven said the reason why he did the movie was because it was a retelling of the story of Jesus Christ. The Christ influences include the death and resurrection of Murphy. His hand is nailed by a bullet. He stands in crucified fashion and his body is pierced with many bullets and the last bullet is delivered to his brow. He is taken to the hospital where he his reconstructed. He is then resurrected as half human and half machine. Jesus at his resurrection was also changed. In the end there is the scene when RoboCop goes towards Boddicker and he walks on the water. Agree with most of that ....

The original is indeed special and while I don't think the second is a complete disaster its just average ... very, very average.

Nope you're not I like DH2 almost as much as the first one. its a pretty good action flick. I don't really understand the hate against it. Plus it still has the same scenario from the first one in terms of john trapped in a building, this time its the airport instead of nakatomi tower. Yes its a little to convenient but it worked. Part 3 however i've never liked.

Like you said ... "its a pretty good action flick" ... thats its problem, its just ok, much like Die Hard 4 its OK, but never even comes close to being great.

I like DHWAV because they tried to do something different and at the very least McTiernan understands McClane ... hes no hero just a bum who has terrible luck and hates to see the 'bad guys' win.

Armour of God 2: Operation Condor. Awesome movie!!!

Well to each its own i though that DH2 was very good, and a great sequel to the first one. I think that mcClane's character was still the same in part 2
he was like in the first one out of luck, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Heck I don't like renny harlin's movies but he did a very good job with DH2. Harlin's interpretation remained IMO faithful to mctiernan's version, he ends up being the reluctant hero his attitude is still the same he's still very human which to me is a crucial characteristic that defines the character of John McClane. If you don't like the movie, the story whatever its fine. We have different opinions, but you're saying or implying that harlin didn't understand the character or got it wrong, an opinion that I totally disagree with as I just explained why above.

I got the christian allegory metaphor right away...

especially the shot of him walking on water during the final battle

That hit it right home...

So I take it all the robocop/aliens/predator/terminator threads got merged into this one?

Biehn's the sh1t. Killing him off in The Rock was a crime, but that's Michael Bay for you.

Yeah but he did have a kickass speech before biting it. "You Know god**** well I can't give that order"

Speaking of Die Hard, has anyone read the book the movie was based on?
