9.1 - Savior - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

My theory is that Lois went to one year in the future where she disappeared and never came back after the events from Doomsday. Clark became the Blur, befriended Zod and his army and somehow caused destruction. Then suddenly, Lois appears and finds out about Clark. Lois' appearance changes Clark's attitude toward Zod and his plans and Clark defeats Zod and his army causing destruction of their world (they want to rebuild Kandor on Earth). So Alia goes back in time to prevent Clark from ever doing this. This kind of reminds me of that S:TAS episode where Lois dies and Superman and Lex rule the world. Superman becomes less "superman-ly" without Lois around.

My thought's exactly , BTW the STAS episode is called Brave New Metropolis
(Sups is very dark and brooding. Very much like Kal-EL is right now)

Brave New Metropolis 1 2
Brave New Metropolis 2 2

I only watched the ep once, but will probably view again before next Friday. In the mean time, here's a few random thoughts in no particular order:

Music:
Nice. Awesome, in fact. They kept the Smallville/Superman motifs and added a few from Batman, and I absolutely loved the short though extremely effective use of Wagner's Götterdämmerung. I get "The Ring" connection, but I'm not sure why they chose to place it within the fiction of the show, ie: playing it on the radio. Regardless, good to see they didn't ram the latest pop title off a Warner label down our throats again. I hope this is a new trend; classical orchestration will improve the epic feel of the story, IMHO.

Acting:
What the hell happened to Durance? Her acting was embarrassingly spotty this episode. She was excellent opposite Hartley and in the solo phone booth scene, but quite distracting in scenes with Mack. Seriously, it seemed like she forgot how to act at times. *sigh*

Choreography:
Wow! They've upped their game. Monorail scenes with Ninja Chick and Lois, and the barn scenes with Clark were fantastic. Kudos to the stunt people and trainers.

Editing:
During the fight club scene, Lois walked around with the round card for what seemed like an eternity. Couldn't they have cut that a little better? Same goes for the smash cut from Lois' phone conversation with the Blur to her getting ready for bed, complete with an ear to ear grin. It was unintentionally comical. Yeah Lois, he's that good. LOL

Effects:
  • Despite early hype to the contrary, I thought the effects were meh at best.
  • The best visual in the whole ep wasn't much of an effect per se, but was very, very epic: Clark at the top of Statue of Liberty.
  • When the monorail flew off its tracks, it was prevented from hitting the ground because Clark was there to catch it. But the thing still came to an abrupt stop. Oy! I hate knowing too much about the laws of physics. Shut up, Hulk! :)

Story:
  • As per usual, SV's writers manage to squeeze ten pounds of plot into a five pound bag. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just hope they don't swish over too much going forward. For example, time travel arcs have a tendency to get WAY out of control, not to mention stupid (see Lost, Heroes, etc.), so I sincerely hope the writers have fully fleshed out that part of the plan for this season. If they're just throwing it together as they go along like they tend to do with less influential arcs, I'll be sorely disappointed.
  • I chuckled during Jor-El's speech to Clark. "Clunky" dialog, indeed. Was that Jor-El explaining what Clark should expect in his journey to becoming Superman, or the writers defending literature's rules of the hero's plight to the audience? LOL
  • Regarding subtle nuances, turning Zod's famous line from the films, "kneel before Zod" into a formalized salute used in the Kryptonian military was brilliant.
  • I'm not big on the dog tag idea - dog tags? really? - but it's consistent with what we saw Jor-El wear in Relic. I would have much preferred they stuck with the tattoo as seen in Arrival, but perhaps the writers felt such a visual would be too awkward to show. I dunno. Anyhoo, continuity for the win! Go Smallville!
  • Telling the police you're hacking into their computer system *while* you're on the phone with them is pretty stupid.
  • And how did Lois find Oliver in less than a day when Chloe and Hamilton couldn't find him for three weeks? Non sequitur!
  • I enjoyed the dialog between Zod and Tess. Good foreshadowing there. Zod explains that it's more effective to take the emotional approach to get what you want, which is exactly what he learns when he goes up against Kal-El in the future. Because beating the tar out of Superman isn't going to get you very far. Threatening the people he cares about however, is worth all the gold in Australia.
  • Finally, Chloe. OMG, the hell? How does she go from Lois telling her that the blur confides in her (Lois), to Clark "skulking" around phone booths? That was just annoying. The pièce de résistance was Chloe trying to guilt Clark into saving Jimmy. Both know the consequences of playing god with time yet she kept pushing buttons. But as much as I was angered by her attempt to hurt Clark where he's most sensitive (a page right out of Zod's book, I might add), I loved that the writers gave us subtle but solid reminders that Clark will always maintain his connection to humanity, even when he's Superman. Explaining where Clark will stow his father's watch when he's wearing tights might be a little harder, however. :D

...More later. Dinner time!

^yeah that's the episode! I had forgotten the title. It's one of my favorites from that show.

Hey I liked Lois's ring attire, I don't hear you ladies complaining about every topless shirt scene involving Clark or Ollie :o

How did a paper for the current day get on the train that crashed.

How did none of the other train cars not fall, once Clark caught the first one, it is not like it is one big solid object, the rest just would have fell off to the side.

Speaking of which.. instead of the train crashing into the ground it crashed (sorry was caught) into Clark.. how does that not kill anyone still.. going from moving to a sudden stop still kills.. 6 feet is not going to change that fact. (Just like when Clark jumped from a plane caring Tess.. she would have snapped like a twig in his arms when he hits the ground)

Acting was not that great..

The slow fight between Lois and Ninja girl, was so slow paced.. did not look real at all.. looked more like half speed pretend fighting

What was with Lois's heel stomp on Brian Austin's Greens foot.. did you hear that sound affect.. sounded like she busted up all the bones in 10 peoples feet.

Sorry if this ruffles anyone's feathers but that was a pretty bad episode.

Oh Brian Austin Green was pretty cool though.

The ring attire was appropriate for the situation. What was "off" was the length of time Lois walked around holding up the round sign. The whole scene was poorly edited IMHO, since it wasn't clear what was going on beyond the obvious. Was this a "legit" fight ring or something a la Combat? The scene opened with a view of a very large building, but Ninja Chick blew through a wall that looked like the side of a barn. And where did everybody go after the commercial break? Lois and Oliver were still standing there with water dripping in the background and everybody else was gone. I'm guessing that scene got edited for time, thus it didn't play as well as it should have.

All part of Clark's powers. Clark has a "shield effect" that makes sure objects don't collapse on their own weight and it shields people he is holding from dying, like when he jumped out of the plane with Tess or in season 5 when he protected Lana from an explosion.

so everything i was going to say or bring up was already mentioned. lol

but i do hae a question that i cant figure out myself. why didnt Chloe heal Jimmy herself? did all of her powers get wiped out when Braniac left?

She lost her powers at the end of season 7 when Brainiac did his little mind infecting thing. Her powers tried to keep her safe for a while but it was established at the end of of the season 8 premiere that they were gone.

Something I just noticed is that Alia seems to be wearing a type of clothing that looks a lot like what Zod was wearing in Superman II. I'm guessing that's some kind of kryptonian army garment.

It was awesome though.

Yes it is .

it should be a fun ride how the whole zod/his army play out.

I've got a theory, I think Lois remembers all the things she see in her flashforward, but she didn't say anything because it would ruin her relationship with 'The Blur'. I think she

saw herself with another blur... and she has never seen that other blur before. :wow:

boy gough and millar probably wished they were still around on the show. Since we know they always wanted to originally do a batman show lol.

Sorry, but
spoilers tell otherwise.

Erica's acting was fine, most people are not complaining about it, some are more critical of Callum Blue for overacting a bit, though I think he did a good job.

The effects were pretty, many think they were better than last year. Which episode is your reference since I'm sure we could criticize details here and there. ;)

On the music and fighting scenes, you're right, they were top notch.

I thought the acting was good but I agree about that scene where Lois was holding the "Round 3" poster. That was pretty long and awkward.

oh i agree that could have been trimmed a bit and we still get the point.

Later, as Lois goes to bed, she has a dream of a future Metropolis with a man bearing the kryptonian symbol of Zod on his chest before taking flight, followed by a man passionately kissing her. Tess kneeling before a shadowy figure, drops of blood, Chloe lying on the ground, Oliver searching for something on the ground, herself and Clark having sex, and a woman coming at her with a sword.

Hey guys i mentioned earlier today about how well savior was doing on iTunes top sellers. Yesterday afternoon i last heard it was around 7th place out of top 10. I was wondering for any one who has iTunes on their computer right now to see where the show is right now on iTunes?

How does an alien from another planet, an alien with crazy superpowers, commit feats that defy physics and save people on a daily basis?

"Suspension of disbelief."

Well I have seen better premieres from Smallville. My least favourite scene is when detective Corben shoved his tongue down Lois's neck 2 minutes after he met her. *rolleyes* I mean come on...
