A discussion on why westerners can't make horror movies anymore

I see that. But a movie like Devil's Rejects or the first Saw are just so far above PUTS IMO. I see why he likes them, but I just can't say that that movie is better than the other two at all.

Anyway, upon further reflection, there have been a few great horror movies in the past ten years. Frailty, 28 Days Later, American Psycho, Devil's Rejects, Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, Scream, The Frighteners, Cube, Vampires, Saw, Signs, Shadow of the Vampire, From Hell, Jeepers Creepers, The Devil's Backbone, One Hour Photo, Bubba Ho-Tep, High/Haute Tension/Switchblade Romance, May, and a few others. Although there are just as many, if not more quality Japanese movies.

Now, I don't have problems with the those movies, but they aren't really horror. Some might have horror elements, but that's it.

I consider them horror movies. Yes, they all have horror elements, and yes, they have other elements aswell. Not all of those are just straight horror, but I feel that most of their scripts, sets, subject matter, atmosphere, and direction lead them into the horror genre.

1-I also find great horror classics like "Halloween", "The Thing", "The Fly" or "Psycho" way better than both Rob Zombie movies.

True horror directors like John Carpenter, Alfred Hitchcock or Wes Craven know that horror is all about suspense, paranoia and fear of the unknown.

It's NOT about blood, gore and guts. Why, "Halloween" is one of the best horror movies ever, and the gore content was kept to a minimum.

Rob Zombie can't process that. He thinks by showered the screen in a pool of guts and blood, that people will be scared. Unfortunately, it's more sick and disgusting than actually scary.

The first "Saw" was good because it focused more on the story and the imprisonment feeling than the actual gore. Unfortunately, the sequel, "Saw 2", relied too much on gore and too few on the psychological aspect.

2-"The Frighteners" is a dark comedy with ghosts.

It's no more of a horror movie than "Ghostbusters", "Casper" and "Beetlejuice".

"Bubba Ho-Tep" is an action/comedy with a mummy, like "The Mummy" and "THe Mummy Returns".

"Signs" is more of a sci-fi thriller.

3-"The People Under the Stairs" reminded me of my worst fear, one I had since childhood.

That's what made it so scary.

Face it: if someone is a fraid of clowns, they are gonna think "It" is the scariest movie ever.

Why? Because too many people confuse violence with horror.

If someone appreaciates horror truly, such as on sites like www.bloodydisgusting.com and the like, they will realise that all of these films are of the horror genre, whether its completely or slightly. There's a lot of different off-shoots to the horror genre. For example I find that the Machinist is a horror movie, in the sense that its a suspense movie.

I know many people are going to disagree with me, but Silent Hill is the only horror movie I cared about this year. In fact, I loved the movie. Alot of people are split on this movie, but i'm for it. I'm just stating my opinion, i'm not here to argue it.

Regardless;

I still enjoyed various horror films of more recent times. Yes there has alot of not-so-great horror fims, but none the less. In fact my core movie genre are horror movies, so i'm always happy to see more of them hit the big screen.

I saw The Descent on DVD today, and it's the best horror movie I've seen in a long time.

Rob Zombie can't process that. He thinks by showered the screen in a pool of guts and blood, that people will be scared. Unfortunately, it's more sick and disgusting than actually scary.

Rod Zombie has a great directorial style. I really don't think he was trying to be scary with either of his movies.

I recently saw Cry Wolf and it was pretty good. I think us "westerners" are gradually getting back to good horror movies.

I also like Silent Hill but I hated the ending.

Personally, I have seen some good japanese horror, but I think it is really over-rated. Some of the films are good, but a lot of them are just as bad as those made in the West.
