Really, I can't thinl of one recent horror movie that's actually scary. Movies like Hostel and Saw that rely on shock value, well, lots of blood and gore is not scary. It's just gross. And speaking of Saw, how many damn movies do they need to make?

Alien is a good example of a movie that doesn't rely on gore and is actually scary{at least the first time}.

I like a good psychological scare and with me it's always the factor of the unexplained paranormal, supernatural or whatever that's not a drooling monster. I think that the Ring adaptations and the original japanese Ringu were scary, and I think I might've been pretty riled up with Event Horizon, which had a delightful Lovecraft meets Barker feel to it, but I saw it like 5+ years ago and can't remember it accurately. There was this french(?) movie called Nameless or something, which was pretty freaky due to the heavy audio manipulation, atmosphere and sound effects.

Or, you could watch the Exorcist again and try telling yourself afterwards that you're not scared.

Also, quite a many folks I've talked with about horror movies don't even watch them at night - I mean, what's the point in that?

The Halloween remake kind of scared me, but the only parts that I found to be creepy/scary were the ones without violence. Like when he was standing right behind the little girl as she was watching TV. After seeing that I kept having the urge to look over my shoulder when I was in the theatre. :D

I agree though, there's too much reliance on blood and gore to shock people and if not, they just go for the easy "Boo!" tactic. That's where someone or something just pops out at you. After seeing that happen in so many movie, it gets predictable. That's also the problem with violence. Once you've committed one gruesome act in a movie, you have top yourself by doing something even more disgusting and it just keeps on going like that. Pretty soon, people will just stop caring.

Not to say there shouldn't be violence in horror movies, I have no problem with that, I just hate to see movies use it as a crutch in place of creativity.

The Descent had some scare value for movies this year. I can't think of anything much else released this year that could be considered worthy of the word.

I saw the Exorcist when I was ten and I didn't think it was scary.

I think the biggest problem with horror movies is that when you get older you'll find it harder and harder to be scared by them. When I was a kid in the 80's I found movies like The Thing, Poltergeist, A Nightmare on Elm Street and others pretty scary. But they doesn't scare me today.

galactus this is also true.
but the descent was not to bad.
IMO a scary movie.

Just watched The Blair Witch Project, and to be honest, it's the only film I've ever seen that still genuinely frightens me.

The Descent really scared me, especially in the first half, when the dangers are real.
The friends of mine who saw it, told me that Spanish horror movie "Rec" by Jaime Balaguerò is the most terrifying thing to hit screens in years.

When you're 11, and easily scared again.

I've never had a more intense horror experience than watching Event Horizon in the dark, on my own, on headphones... it's a very immersive film and I wouldn't even say its actually a full blown Horror movie, Event Horizon is the film Alien should have been. Probably the most underrated film I've ever seen minus Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

The most impressive thing about Event Horizon is that it's a Paul W. Anderson movie that doesn't suck.

It's funny, but I think Shyalaman's movies pound per pound create more tension than any other films despite not being strictly horror. It all comes downs to creating the proper mood. I remember watching Signs for the first time from the back of the theater and seeing an ocean of heads pop up and down whenever a scare paid off. They were screaming like a bunch of little girls and it was great. Hell, I remember getting the DVD and pooping it in, by myself on dark night and getting the chills from simply the menus! ha. It was that creeping feeling that something unseen is watching you.

HAHA.............pooping

Pooping in movies is just not kosher. I'm sorry.

Its probabley the best movie his ever made. I thought event horixon was prestty good. Not the most orginal film as it was basically a haunted house movie in space but it was well shot and the acting was good for a horror movie.

never. once you grow up you stop believing in things like santa claus and ghosts, and supernatural things. then again maybe you are ignorant of these things....

When you stop complaining and make it. You got all the answers apparently, go forth and do.

They will become scary when you become 8 again

outside of that good luck

I thought some of the Halloween remake had some chilling momments because the presence of MM is scary in itself, but outside of that there are really only three movies that creep me out and that is the original Halloween, Night of the Living Dead, and Nosferatu...outside of that there really isn't a whole lot that scares me any more...every now and then the fear friday the 13th struck in me before going to camp when i was 10 will creep back...but outside of that almost nostalgia fear not a whole lot scares me

When the entertainment industry stops pushing films immersed in gallons of blood, tons of sex, and so much language it would make your average sailor blush. The so-called "horror" genre has lost what little integrity it had to begin with (and to a larger extent, so have many other films). The people behind these films push every standard further. They're interested more in shock, sex, and slime than anything resembling suspense. Until those practices change, it'll just keep going. the best way (in my opinion) to stop the production of these sickening films, is for great amounts of people to stop watching them in theaters. As the numbers drop, the filmmakers would be forced to think up a new strategy...and hopefully, it'd be a far more decent choice.

When will horror movies become "scary" again?

When mankind is able to return to childhood and then get scared ****less by the horror movies.

Until then, keep pushing the standards further

Theres no such thing as a scary movie.
No movie is scary.
EVER

Never. We will always have the usual 'group of teens in trouble' with the usual sex scenes and rock 'n roll credits song. And we will continue to get plotless snuff films that simply rely on fingernails being drilled through and nipples slowly being hooked by some 'crazy doctor' as the victim screams to god for help.

...I want my scary horror movies godamnit. Where's Freddy? Jason? ASH???
