We have many posters who don't live in the US on here. How does this election and aftermath look to you? What are the conversations like about it abroad?

having a presidential election in 24 days, with one of the two candidates being a populist of the extreme right, how do you think we feel? pure shock. with Brexit and Trump the nutjob scum is obviously on a winning streak and I don't want my country to be the next to make a stupid ass decision

Here in Australia I've seen a few emotional people on FB, but for the most part we just think eh he's a moron, but there have been morons in the oval office before.

A lot of people are concerned about what this means for the climate though with deniers now controlling the legislative and executive branches and soon to be controlling the judicial branch of government.

Then again, Nixon bowed to public pressure and started the EPA.

Knowing a guy like Trump who doesn't believe in climate change become president is pretty scary for the wold, and him being against Paris agreement is another step backward.

And Trump's racist actions with Obama's birth cetificate or the Central Park Five aren't reassuring either.

Mike Pence who advocated conversion therapy is as scary as him.

In Southeast Asia all eyes are now on China, because we believe she will make some moves in the immediate wake of the elections.

In Canada, people are thinking maybe we can take that greatest country in the world title away from you guys now. :cwink:

Ehm, the world doesnt think america is the greatest country for a long time now.
Only Americans think its the greatest country ever.

Canada seems to be pretty chill over there, might visit it someday.

That was the joke, that is why I had a smiley face. Americans think they have the greatest country in the world and everyone else disagrees. Trump becoming President will make other countries think even less of America.

Ah, well the world became a dark and sad place...jokes seem like a far away thing from the past.:woot:

The Rest of the world lets America think they are so great, its a insider joke the world has and America doesnt get.:woot:

Here in Sweden I suppose everyone is as shocked as everyone else elsewhere. Personally I feel almost physically sick over some of the things Trump has promised he will do. If those plans becomes reality my wish is that the rest of the world boycotts American products in protest. And I mean anything possible, including entertainment like movies. That's what I'm going to do.

She says her American friends say they don't know anyone in their circle that voted Trump, so how could he win?

I think they answered their own question.

America is a very big country. We don't know people in our circles because usually our circles think like us and have similar world view as us. Liberals and more progressive minded people live in city and urban centers while conservatives live in rural and suburban areas. We are surrounded by people who think like us but there are vastly different views in different parts of the country or even your state.

I mean, I'm a conservative and a Republican in California and I have quite a few conservative friends. That being said none of them voted for Trump. Republicans in California are different than Republicans in Ohio. They either voted third party or wrote someone in. Which didn't impact the election because Hillary will receive all of California's Electoral Votes.

I'm seeing a big emergence in this kind of thinking, and to be honest I'm seeing it on both sides. For example, check out this story reported by Glenn Beck (who to his credit has been trying to preach the whole "let's get out of our echo chambers and learn about each other" angle)

It's a mix of "hahaha, did they really elect that nut job? good ole america" and "oh, ****, he won?"

I'm not saying the Right isn't guilty of their echo chambers as well, but the left recently has absolutely shut down any type of opposing thought and I think they are feeling the sting this week. You have college campuses that don't allow conservative speakers, which I don't understand why you don't want to understand the other side's argument. You have people within Black Lives Matter telling white people that they need to not speak and they just need to listen. How about everyone listens to one another? Wouldn't that be better? Maybe then we can better understand one another and find common ground.

Here's what the Irish are talking about today,

A senior economic adviser to Donald Trump has conceded Ireland will retain its corporate tax advantage over the US even if Congress passes cuts outlined by the president-elect.

The new US policy aimed at repatriating multinationals could be in place within the first 100 days of the Trump administration, according Stephen Moore.

However, in an interview on Friday he said the US was more concerned about companies leaving for countries such as China and Mexico and the knock-on effect this has on domestic manufacturing jobs.

US tax cut targeting Irish-based firms could emerge in first 150 days

Even if America drops its corporate tax rate as a senior economic advisor to Trump has said, it may not have an immediate effect on Ireland.

Donald Trump's senior economic advisor Stephen Moore has warned they will drop their corporate tax rate to compete with us.

Speaking in a BBC interview yesterday, he said they would cut their headline tax rate for companies from 35% to just 15% to encourage them to locate in the States.

US multinationals 'more likely to stay in Ireland than go' even if Trump slashes corporation tax rate

I'm Portuguese, btw

I'm still speechless about all of this.
Like i read before, this was a fight between good and evil....and evil won.

We have CNN, Fox News and MSNBC on cable, and i was watching Hannity yesterday on Fox News and i was sick to my stomach.
They were laughing and saying "we won" and calling protesters and democrats in general "crybabies"; and they mocked Miley Cyrus for her crying video and i was WTF?
And they had Sheriff David Clarke and Jeanine Pirro there and they were mocking all of that, and the Sherriff even went to point of saying that they are like little toddlers having a tantrum, it's fun at first but then they have the shut up or they will be smacked.

And a few hours later, i turn it again on Fox News, and there was Rudy Giuliani saying how great and honest Trump is and always saying what he think and that's exactly who he is.
And it's frightening! If Trump is really that racist and xenophobe and misogynistic....i fear for America.

But, who is Trump?
Trump is a joke, he has been for quite some years now. He is a eccentric and narcissistic billionaire with sociopathic tendencies (or full-blown). The man that stomped everyone on his path to arrive where he is, with no regard for anyone.
And that's the new president of the United States.

How can anyone think he will do a great or even a good job is beyond me?!?!?

But, more scary to the world in general is his ties and admiration for Vladimir Putin, which is scary as all hell.

I called Trump winning the election the second the DNC and the media sidestepped Bernie aside in favor of Hillary. I said back in May that it would be a miracle if Trump didn't win...and oh how right I was. :csad:

I'm genuinely shocked at all the Hillary voters who thought he had no chance of winning. It actually boggles my mind so many of you could believe this.

First, I don't think a lot of those people get who Donald Trump is. He's not just a buffoon. He's one of the most successful con artists in American history. Professional hypnotists like Scott Adams called him the best master of persuasion he's ever seen in the political sphere. And he was running on an anti-Establishment platform in a year of populist grievances. And against an uncharismatic candidate which was the symbol of the American Establishment.

This leads into my second point. Everytime in history when the people had to choose between the Establishment and the pseudo-populist, the pseudo-populist usually won. And even when he didn't, another pseudo-populist was always just a few years away from winning because the Establishment never addresses the issues that lead to the rise in pseudo-populists. So why the hell would this time have been any different?

Well on behalf of all intelligent Americans, let us apologize to all of you.

Anybody here who pays attention knows we're far from "the greatest country on earth"
Until we expunge the older, more racist-y elements, we won't get even close

but really, quick vote, what IS the greatest country? Could such a thing even exist?? Every country has its s**ty parts

There's no such thing. It's just a matter of opinion.

I said the exact same thing.
Now in May, but around September.
Never been so sad for being right...

Exactly.
And it always end of being awful.
Among the populists that won in times where the people didn't had any faith in the establishment were HITLER, MUSSOLINI, STALIN, PUTIN, MUGABE....

Good luck with that.

There is no "greatest country" and everyone that thinks that is a moron and ignorant.
Countries are NOTHING without the people, and there are good and bad everywhere.
Without people, countries are just pieces of land.

"Greatest country" is just rhetoric and metaphor to describe social issues and politics, freedom and rights.

One of the biggest problems in American, according to the rest of the world, is that you guys live like you were an island.
Nothing matter but you, America is the center of the world, f**k the rest mentality.
In Europe, we live as a community, we know what is going on in the other countries, we care for it.
And then there is (sorry to say) the ridiculous patriotism, which is a joke all over the world.
It's great that you love your country, but enough is enough, with all those flags and all those "God Bless America" rhetoric.

There was once a CNN reporter in the 90s (don't remember the name, all i remember was that he had glasses and was black) that called America as a shadowy tyranny with all that insane (his words) patriotism.
