"A Fresh Start" New Marvel Relaunch for 2018

I read some of Slott's Spider-man a couple years ago. The stuff before and leading up to Superior. I thought it was pretty good, but surely a run that long has highs and lows. Didn't he make Parker Industries? That sounds like an interesting change to Peter's life. But I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Spider-man.

Son of a ...

Just when I was getting excited about Tony coming back. I stopped buying comics all together when "Superior Iron Man" wasn't all that superior a few years back. I completely stopped. The writing was just, ridiculous. (Tony's parents aren't his real parents!) Then I heard about the new direction, CB Cebulski taking over, Iron Man getting new writers and artist, Tony returning, YES! and now this. uggh

Thanks for the write up and heads up. Much appreciated. :cwink:

You're welcome. And while there's definitely those that agree with my assessment of Slott I'd still like to stress it's only my opinion. I don't want to rob you of the excitement with Tony returning. That's not my intention. While Slott is not my cup of tea I'd at least give the new IM book a shot. You may like it.

Did Slott make Parker Industries? Yes, he did. But I'll add the following...

Turning Peter into a CEO of a major corporation, jet setting around the world like a playboy a la Tony Stark was a wrong move and not at all a direction that is in line with Peter Parker nor Spider-Man. It was supposed to be the new status quo for years to come as Dan often stated but it lasted about a year. New changes that are meant to be game changers that don't last and don't actually make any noteworthy changes. And in proper Slott fashion he made Peter an incompetent CEO at that, shirking his duties and being irresponsible with the company.

It should also be noted that the main argument for the pro-Parker Industries status quo is that it allows Peter to finally earn money for his brilliant inventions. Except that Peter himself didn't start PI nor earn his doctorate, both of those are credited to Doc Ock when he inhabited Pete's body during Superior Spider-Man. I find it funny that the same group of people that were for the PI status, a status that made Peter rich with almost any resource at his disposal to help make his life easier, were outspoken against Peter being married to a 'supermodel'
because somehow that makes his life easier and also means that he's unrelatable.

Slott CAN be a good writer. His run on Avengers: Initiative was fantastic. And his GLA mini (Great Lakes Avengers) was a lot of fun. I've not read his She-Hulk or Silver Surfer but they got pretty good reviews.

It very well may be that he just wasn't good for Spider-Man. I didn't read half of his run, but from what I read I think the problem was that he was iron clad dead set on Peter remaining the same Peter he was back in the 60s-70s. And unfortunately for him, Peter's not been that lovable loser for the lifetime of many if not most of his readers. It was just bad handling of a long established character and the higher ups weren't any better regarding their opinion of Peter Parker should be. I genuinely miss the character and HOPE that Spencer can set things right. If he can do that, I can forgive him for being a miserable human being.

I just don't get why Spider-man fans get so mad that Slott keeps things at a status quo when so many marvel fans beg for the status-quo whenever a major change happens.

Breaking up MJ and Peter is a long lasting meaningful change.

But again, this is a conversation I'm not really apart of and have not much invested in.

I don't even read comics on a consistent basis and even I am exhausted by all these quick fix relaunches of the titles. Does starting everything at #1 all the time really make comics less confusing for the non-reader or just confuse them even more? Which issue #1 should I start at? The first one or the billionth one?

No news item today?

Actually what it does is attract new readers thus upping the comics sales. The problem is after the first one had peoples curiosity if its a subpar book or just not interesting enough to hold the audience it garnered for the first book it will fade until it gets cancelled only to restart the cycle of abuse.

A lot of this feels like the new EIC trying to put his stamp on things. Which isn't necessarily a good sign.

If you're looking for where to start, then a #1 is for you. If people were more willing to just pick up the latest issue and go from there, they wouldn't be as relaunch-happy.

Of course, relaunches also increase sales (from the publisher to the direct market, which are the sales that get recorded and where the publisher makes money) because collectors buy #1s and because they usually have various incentives that encourage retailers to speculate and buy more than usual.

Yeah I'm going to buy the first issues and see how they are. I've already been getting the last couple of issues "The Search for Tony Stark", so may as well continue.

If anything when he returns it's going to be issue #600, so there's that.

Since you're not really invested, I'll keep this reply brief...

Slott's status quo was the whole problem with Spider-Man. See my previous posts to avoid me repeating myself. Slott crapped on the main supporting cast and either took them outta the book entirely and or tried unsuccessfully replacing them with his own creations. Instead of building on the lore he made it into his own fan fic. And honestly Doc Ock would still probably be spider-man if it were up to him. I'll never be in favor of a status quo that reduces the main character to the butt of a joke and removes any and all actual character development.

I can't argue against your opinion if you're not a fan of the character of MJ but calling the break up of the marriage a meaningful change is just wrong imo. Not only the break up itself but the manner in which they did it. Ever since then Peter has lost his most important aspect--his relatability. Moving from one meaningless relationship to the next and not allowed to grow and mature. He's stuck at the emotional level of a 15 year old.

And I can't blame Marvel fans for wanting a return to a status that doesn't have Tony Stark not being Iron Man, Thor being 'unworthy' and Captain America as an agent of Hydra.

The biggest problem with Slott is that he creates interesting concepts and then undoes them. He redeems Doc Ock, next thing you know Ock's a villain again. He builds up Parker Industries, but then does nothing interesting with it and tears it all down within a year.

Are we just all out of Fresh Start reveals at this point? Cause I thought we were in for some X-Men news.

Not interested unless they bring back the Spider marriage and fix the books

I’m with you on this. I had collected Spider-man from the time I was a little kid, I had ASM 121 the Death of Gwen Stacy that I bought with my own allowance from the corner store. I was a fan literally for several decades, but during One More Day I dropped it mid-arc without finishing once I heard what they were going to do.

I collected Ultimate Spider-man as that was still fun, but otherwise it would take a real overhaul to get me back to the main title.

Seriously, I think Marvel Comics need a new EIC; they seemed to be running out of good ideas already.

We... haven't read a single book?

Im shocked. I thought for sure they'd have revealed some stuff last week

X-men news!

I really like Mariko Tamaki's She-Hulk, so this is cool. Glad to see her get some work.

All New Wolverine was the one book I was hoping would be unaffected by Fresh Start. It's over 30 issues and still telling great stories and selling well.

Oh it was inevitable with Wolverine back and the fact that Taylor couldnt confirm if Laura would be keeping the mantle in his XPlain interview last month, all but confirmed it. Going back to X-23 though doesnt feel like a fresh start but more regression. I prefer it as a name for her since its what Im used to but it carries negative connotations that make it seem odd that she'd even go back to it
