Starkville's "House of El" Podcast has a 2-part interview with Steven DeKnight, writer/director and co-executive producer of "Smallville".

In part one of the interview Derek and Tucker talk to Steven S. DeKnight about his previous work on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and of course, Smallville. He also discusses his involvement on MTV's Undressed, Firefly, Buffy the Animated Series, and The Punisher 2. DeKnight also delves into his past projects; including television pilots he's pitched, films he's been working on and much, much, more!
In part two of the interview Derek and Tucker talk with Steven DeKnight about his work on "Justice", Smallville's 11th episode for season 6 which he wrote and directed. They then go in depth about season 6's premiere episode, "Zod", and discuss Steven's work on Smallville since season 4, including all the episodes he's written and directed, and his love for comics and feature films. You can listen to the 2-part interview by subscribing to the podcast in iTunes, or by visiting the iTune's listing.

The stuff about Punisher 2 starts at 18:26. DeKnight was the second writer (Hensleigh was the first) but they canned his take because it was too hardcore. Listen to the podcast cause he says a whole lot more about his story and how the studio works. Very interesting stuff.

Hey Retro is that link in post #1 to something you posted...I noticed the "retro" in the name. Just checking.

6-ish drafts? You have to be kidding me!!

Well there's the mystery screenwriter for us. I knew Hensleigh was working on the first one but something in the middle seemed to be missing and this fills in that gap. Maybe we can get that director from Smoking Aces to do The Punisher sequel.

Joe Carnahan? That would be awesome but there may be some trouble getting him on board. His movies are hardcore R-Rated stuff which the studio doesn't seem to want. (studio who make the Saw and Hostel movies:rolleyes:) He also writes and produces his own movies and i don't think LGF would want to give him so much power especially now that Beattie is on board.

We don't know really what hardcore meant in the other script being turned down. Maybe it was just stupid hardcore, or too much nudity, or something that didn't fit right with the character. Tom Jane's always said "Blood's gonna be on the walls" on this one. Avi also said this one should be much more violent. I'd love the guy who directed Running Scared too.

This whole situation makes me wanna vomit. A Punisher movie can never be too hardcore. God studios are so ****ing gutless these days. Come on let's get it over with and let Fox get the rights.

Whats wrong with hardcore - thats a good thing.

what confuses me is that Saw and Hostel are both extremely violent and gory, but theyre not gonna let the punisher be like that too? its like they wanna cater to the same audience as spiderman or x-men. The main thing is it seems like theyre really starting to get things rolling on the sequel so anything is better than nothing.

Hell no! They wan't it rushed PG-13 shlt more than any other studio. (Or was that sarcasm?)

I can't believe LGF on this either. Too hardcore? Wtf? The Punisher and LionsGate. Too hardcore?

It was sarcasm because I have a bad feeling this sequel has a chance of going in that direction.

I hope nobody listens that dumb executive who, according to DeKnight, suggested to make Punisher more about saving lives than punishing criminals!! They need loose that guy asap.

Well punishing the murderers, drug lords, rapists etc...does save lives. But the Punisher is ALL about Punishing. For God's sake he's not called "The Lifesaver".
