A suburban county that sparked a public outcry when its libraries temporarily eliminated funding for Spanish-language fiction is now being asked to ban Harry Potter books from its schools. Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban "Macbeth" and "Cinderella."

"There's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter," she said, adding that the books don't support any particular religion but present instead universal themes of friendship and overcoming adversity.

In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

Days later, the board reversed its decision amid accusations that the move was anti-Hispanic.

Its just a fictional book, I see no harm to it.

Especially since very little in the books even remotely resembles Wicca.

I don't see them banning fiction that carry clear Christian overtones.
If this is a public library then crying foul because of some vague connection to religion really shouldn't have any effect at all.

she's a bit late isnt she, i thought christian bashing of harry potter happened a few years ago

This isn't anything new. Rowling is at the top of the Banned Book List every year, which puts her in the company of authors like J.D. Salinger and John Steinbeck. Individuals all over the world have tried to demonize and outlaw the Harry Potter series. I really have no words for this kind of idiocy. All I can do I is :rolleyes:x1,000,000,000

This isn't really funny, just good advice.:down

But Wil, our children are in danger. I mean, really, can you argue with this statement??

"If your child did not like to take medicine and you had a chocolate drink with the medicine, plus arsenic in it, would you give it to them? You would if you did not know it was in there and what arsenic was. It is the same scenario with fantasy especially when it is laced with the poison of witchcraft."

And clearly, these guys have Rowling pegged!

"These types of writings are nothing more then Satan's way to undermine the family. Kids get these books and then live in a fantasy world and rebel against there parents. Here is a quote from the author: "The idea that we could have a child who escapes from the confines of the adult world and goes somewhere where he has power, both literally and metaphorically, really appealed to me."
Note what she says about the child having power? What she is saying is that the child needs to have power and control over parents and also to have the power of the occult. The author also uses occult terms in her thinking. Look at this new age phrase. "I have a very visual imagination. I see it, then I try to describe what is in my mind's eye," This minds eye concept is the heart of the new age movement.
"

It's a bit late to ban it. Everyone's already bought it.

I'd just like to say that this picture made my morning. Thanks, Link! :)

Other than that, i like Brodie's original idea of what should be done to this lady. The bigger the crucifix the better. Preferrably done in a circle containing an upside down star with lots of candles around it and plenty of chanting in Latin, compelling the anti-christ to be born.

jag

Jag likes his little joke:cmad:

I figured that part out. Just ignore me next time I do something dumb
