Mother loses bid to ban Harry Potter books

Yes, in Sunday School in the late 70's, we got an assignment to bring in one object that reminds of us God's glory.

I thought I'd be "cool" and bring in my Chewbacca action figure and say some horse s*** about "God is kind of like the Force." and the teacher blew up red-faced and angry 'cause we should never EVER compare God to the Force and I was like, "why?"
and he said that Obi Wan says the Force controls us AND we control it, but we don't control GOD! :cmad:"

And, with further research, I learned that Christians were pissed that Star Wars movies promote a New Age agenda.
not all of them though... I'm a Christian, and I certainly don't think that way. I just look at it as an appealing fictional storline. Now if an extremist want to take it out of context, all he's gonna do is piss off the fans.

I gather that the fans don't watch it for any religious purpose... they watch it because it's a good movie.

This is what really annoys me about all these stories trying to ban Harry Potter. The witches and wizards in the books don't get their powers from worshipping Satan. Voldemort has never mentioned Satan that I can remember. They're just scared of anyone or anything that is different or offers a different view on things ie the theory of evolution.
That shouldn't even be an issue. Even if they got their powers from Satan, it still shouldn't be banned.

I agree with that on some level...

The exact reason why people watch and read Harry Potter.

I know, I was just stating it.

I think my response to one of your posts got stuck in posting-limbo at the bottom of the last page, so I'll just repost it, since you seem to be semi-sidestepping what I personally find to be alarming about your stance on this issue.

I have no problem when it comes to a children's book concerning witchcraft to fight another evil warlock in a book, but when it comes down to having incantations and spellbook in a children's section of a library, yeah, I have a problem... but not with this particular book.
Ugh, I overestimated your ability to infer. Incantations and spells do NOT have any physical consequences. They're only deemed "dangerous" in the way that christians deem not worshiping god to be "dangerous." Meaning, they find it blasphemous, which they feel is enough reason for it to be banned. Thing is, being blasphemous should have NOTHING to do with determining whether kids should have access to it, not in a country that isn't a theocracy.

the use of spells and believing in God are two different things... I don't look at it as being dangerous, but to a little kid who doesn't understand it, yeah I see it as dangerous, but not after he understands what he getting himself/herself into. That goes with the same thing as believing or not believing in God... it's not dangerous, it's a simple choice. Plain and simple.

What, pray tell, is he getting himself into? What harm could he possibly bring through practicing something physically harmless like witchcraft? It's like practicing being a magician. And don't bring in anything about harming his soul, or his afterlife.

It's not what he's getting himself into, it's when he dosn't understand what he's doing. If I saw a 6 yr. old opening up a spell book, yeah I'd be a little concerned... however, if I saw a 14 yr old open the same book, I'd just say to myself "that's his choice."

and it has nothing to do with his afterlife or soul... that's just ridiculous.

Isn't it sort of up to the parent to decide what their kids should or shouldn't be reading and to educate them about the things they do read?

This women has to much time on her hands. She should get a job or a hobbie or something. She could serve soup at the local homeless shelter, anything from trying to think whats best for everyone.

that's true too... however when a child is not allowed to read a Harry Potter book just because the parent thinks it's blasphemous is stupid. My neice is going through the same ordeal with Harry Potter...

Yeah...Chambers right. This woman is nothing but a waste of talentless space.
She's probably just jealous of Rowling, because she rose from nothing and became a multi-millionare in only a short time. Then again...Look at her front porch, she obviously has money to blow. Probably from a divorce settlement.

Even worse, a child is not allowed to check out Harry Potter at the library because SOMEONE ELSES parents decided they not only didn't want their child to read it but no one elses, either.
