Do you give money to people who'll come up to you and ask for a few bucks?

Today, I was at a Lowe's. My friend and I bought some Philly Cheesesteaks at a stand in front of Lowe's. We walk back to the car, and there is a guy who is fixing his 2 front tires. I saw this guy, when I first got to Lowe's, wondering what was wrong.

His girlfriend comes up to me and asks me for a couple of bucks. I (having 10 bucks in my pocket) say no, because I blew my load on the food in my hand. She says she was very low on money and was barely living out of her truck. (I guess she meant it wasn't the best of $ times for her) I kindly say no, say I'm sorry, and wish her and her boyfriend good luck. While I am eating in the car, I see her asking random people in the parking lot for money. I really start to feel terrible when I see her doing this, because I start to believe she really does need the money.

Later, I see that the boyfriend fixes the tires and drives off. I felt really bad. I got jipped once for being too kind, so that was in my mind. Half of me thought she was lying, because if I gave her "a couple of bucks", what would it have done? The compassionate side of me felt terrible. I start thinking that charity is always a great thing and what if I were in that position? :(

But the question is:

Do you give money to people who'll come up to you and ask for a few bucks?

If I have the extra cash I would spare a dollar or two. Because I know if they didn't really need it, then karma would ass rape them later.

But in your situation, it really depends on what she would have done for that dollar.

Sometimes one dollar, sometimes twenty. Whatever I pull out of my pocket, since I just stuff it all in one.

I did when I first moved to the city. Then I figured out if you give them anything theyll follow you/ask for more.
They are invisible to me now.

Dang, I made it multiple choice on accident.
I hope somebody doesn't pick both. :(

I picked both because it depends on the circumstances, but mostly yes.

I gave a homeless guy a sandwich when he asked me for money and I turned around and he threw it in the garbage.

No. I listen to my iPod and keep walking (and quickly say "No" if they're actually speaking to me). Occasionally someone has harrassed me and I've given them some change to make them go away... but that's rare.

I always pretend like I'm talking on my cell or I'll leave my headphone on even if im not listening to music.

Reminds me of sacrymovie.

I used to.
There are so many scammers and some that really should seek aide off the street.
I hope to discourage them both.

I give money, there is an organization that collects money...its called "the homeless voice" it basically does fundraisers to help homeless people, I give as much as I can.

I feel sorry for people who are in need and I think everyone should help...I know it sounds ******ed but every penny does count

Don't trust all of those foundations. A friend of mine worked for one and he told me they kept half of the money earned and the employer kept the other half.

I love the homeless drunks which ask for money. They admit they're alcoholics, and tell me they'd even use the money for beer. At least they are honest:o

Ugh. Some of them though...I can't stand. I lack compassion for someone who asks me for money, and when they don't get what they want...they get miffed, to say the least. I actually didn't have any change that morning, on the way to college.

'Oh yeah, every ****er says that...don't they?!' He yells in my face. Lame.

Hehe, funny when you say to a friend... 'get a fricking job, you loser'. Then the crazy homeless guy thinks you're talking to him :/ Not good.

Well I have the money and there is no way I can ever know the truth but there are still a hefty amount of non-profit oraganizations and Ill still give some money, I guess Ill have to rely on karma -shrugs-

They'll only drink or snort something you give them money. I'll donate to the Salvation Army thanks.

I have giving money before, when asked. But generally don't give money to people with signs; it's probably that kind of laziness that got them there in the first place. The one's that say, "Broke - Need Money - Please Help"; well no *****, your standing on a corner holding a sign. I am, however, more than happy to pick up extra food at lunch and take it to them.

Haha, in Berkeley, there are homeless guys who ask for weed money... they even have signs that say it...

but yeah, I don't live in Berkeley, it was a trip, a sorta Chasing Amy ordeal.

Anyway, I give money if I can... I feel that life'll give ya a lemon if you do help people out...

Tell them they're not being subtle enough.

The worst ones are the ones with dogs...

The dog and the guy follow you and the guys all

MY DOGS STARVIN MAN

and I care more about a starving dog then a starving man

Im horrible

I should die

....

What were we talking about again?

I used to give money to the homeless all the time...

But I rarely, rarely ever do now. There are TOO many scammers, and there are too many alchoholics among the genuine homeless. Even when I do give change it's just pennies.

One reason I don't trust alot of beggers is because so many times I'll be with a friend and they'll say "I see that guy down my area all the time! He owns a big van! He's rich!".

One guy that I find really amusing is this foreign guy who claims to be from Kosovo. He's hilarious. I dunno how many times he's asked me and my friends for money. "I am from Kosovo! I have... 9 children! My wife, she has died! Please!! My children are hungry!!". Next time we see him... "I am from Kosovo! I have 6 children! My wife is very sick!".

And every single time, he is clearly drunk.
