Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Movie in the Works

I think 'Avengers' just rose the bar so high that it's really hard for films of the same genre to even compete without being seen as "not as good as 'The Avengers.'" I actually saw that happening the moment after the film ended. The world now knows whats possible and really won't settle for less. Any other summer Snow White & Prometheus & MIB 3 would have stuck out more I think.

Is The Avengers The Godfather or something? Is it sweeping the Oscars? It was just a perfect storm of multiple fanbases coming together, paying 3D ticket prices, great marketing, the appeal of seeing these characters that have been around for 50 years and lame competition.

The trailers for Dark Shadows, The Dictator, Battleship and MIB3 just didn't interest moviegoers.

Same thing happened last May but it was perhaps less dramatic or there was no great film at the beginning of May to trample those films.

Thor had a $65 million open because well that's what the marketing could drum up.

Pirates had a big opening but for the series it was a disappointing one and did poorly in North America compared to the other three.

Bridesmaids had excellent WOM (The Dictator not so much).

Kung Fu Panda 2 opened lower than expected and performed poorer.

The Hangover Part II made less than Part 1.

X-Men First Class didn't have the best opening against no new competition.

Super 8 opened small and there was the disaster that was Green Lantern.

Cars 2 was the lowest grossing Pixar film (after inflation).

Transformers Dark of Moon was also down, and was third in the series after inflation.

Harry Potter 8 did very well. Audiences wanted to see that and liked it.

Cowboys & Aliens bombed.

Rise of the Planet of Apes surprised people because they had low expectations and did better than Captain America and Thor at the worldwide box office. Who saw that happening?

The Help also had a great showing while Spy Kids and Conan sputtered out.

Great to good films that are marketed well, have great word of mouth will always succeed. Perhaps with the the recession people are less likely to gamble on films like they may have in years past (Green Lantern, X-Men, Cars 2) because of the higher 3D tickets costs or they don't mind waiting until DVD or even TV.

The only films I saw in theatres last year were:
Bridesmaids
The Hangover Part II
Harry Potter 8
Rise of the POTA

I've seen Thor, Captain America, Super 8, X-Men on Netflix and The Help on pay cable TV. While I rented Cowboys & Aliens and will get around to watching Transformers on Netflix.

I thought the horse scene was hilariously fun. Did they ever explain the Vampires immunity to sun light?

No, I think when they were explaining the history of the vampire they just said they increased their immunity to sun light over time or something to that nature.
I thought the movie was okay it felt very long and needed a little more pace to it. I really didn't care for the guy playing Lincoln he was okay, but whatever. I was actually really let down at the end of the movie, I thought there was going to be a climatic battle between Abe and Adam(main vamp), but nope. To me best sequence was Abe rescuing his friend at the plantation.

What happened to Adam?

Remember that after Adam beat up Henry, Henry started laughing because it was revealed what was really in all those crates was rocks, not silver & Adam asked where the silver was, Abe stabs Adam with the little silver watch & then he dies as the train falls into the fire and all that.

I get a feeling this movie is going to clean up when it hits DVD/Blu. It could really become a cult thing down the line.

Jw, anyone else get Batman Begins vibes at points?

The tree scene could be seen as similar to the ice scene in Batman Begins.

Legend rather than man.

The train at the end.

It was an alright "tiny" film. I enjoyed the book more than the film. It left a lot out but it was under 2 hours.

well timur called ALVH the batman of the 19th century in this featurette

My quick thoughts on the movie:

It was entertaining in that schlocky B-way. Despite looking little like their historical counterparts, I thought the cast overall did excellent all around. I especially liked Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturgess and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Mary Todd Lincoln. Visually it looked quite cool and what you'd expect from this director and had a nice style for something so absurd.

However, I have to say it is quite a bit disappointing. This may seem odd to say, but it needed to be more grounded in history. I did read the book this is based on two years ago and the book is more of an absurd "biography" based on actual historical research that also happens to feature Lincoln killing vampires. It actually pretty cleverly finds a way of placing the absurd premise of vampires into Lincoln's life. The movie tosses that. We don't see Lincoln as a lawyer, his real relationship with his dad, his first trip to New Orleans, his debates with Stephen Douglass, his other two sons Robert and Tad, or some of the book's most wacky and delicious ideas like Lincoln making an unlikely acquaintance with Edgar Allen Poe on their fascination with vampires or the reveal that Henry was part of the Roanoke Colony and they were taken out by vampires! :awesome:

Instead, we get a whole lot more of horse flipping, train, falling, Mary Todd Lincoln taking the "Underground Railroad" to Gettysburg to deliver silver weapons and shoot a vamp in front of Union soldiers and other absurdities. Also, the idea that Lincoln was best friends growing up with a slave who was not only a close friend as an adult but also in his administration is such Hollywood craziness that it made the vampires seem more realistic.

I know it's called "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," but the book was so dryly funny because it grounded most of everything else in history and let the vampire fighting he kept a secret journal about be the only absurd thing. The movie just ignores history all together and has things like Joshua Speed dying the night of July 2, 1863 on a train bound for Gettysburg. The book was a "biography" about Lincoln that just happened to feature his secret war waged by hunting vampires. The movie is a typical action movie about hunting vampires that happens to star Abraham Lincoln. The first way worked much better, in my opinion.

6.5/10

My thoughts.

Yeah, I kinda agree. I'm really hoping the DVD comes packed with several deleted/extended scenes. Would've been cool to have seen Poe in the film.

Poe wasn't in it. I'm unsure how much was deleted. A lot of what is in there is from the script I read and it's the first movie where I didn't see that much missing. Not saying there won't be deleted scenes, just not that many or at least that I can recall. Nothing stood out as missing.

I know he wasn't in it, I'm saying it would've been nice to have seen him in the film had it been longer or something. Like a little cameo or whatever of someone playing him.

I just got back from the theater, and I have to say that even though there were pacing issues, this movie is definitely a guilty pleasure that I would find myself watching late at night.

The movie did make me want to read the book again. Like others have mentioned the book was great as a historical biography in a weird way. I actually gained a good deal of resepect for lincoln not even based on his vampire side adventures.

It would have been interesting if they went the bio route with the film sort of the upcoming spielberg pic but with vampires.

I thought he was pretty good unfortunately for him the dialogue was atrocious and he needed to get into the beard quicker because I didn't buy him as young Abe at all but I thought his performance was pretty good.

Walker did what the role required, but he can do better if given the material, a la Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. I'd like to see him get into a real superhero role though.

I liked the film. I thought Walker did a fine job, reminded me of a young Liam Neeson.

Just thought that first trailer was really awful.

Does anyone think this movie might kill the whole genre mash-up thing in Hollywood that Seth Grahame-Smith is so known for before it really even gets started? The torture porn genre is already basically dead.

Just saw this movie today. I thought it was great. Bit sparse on story at times (it felt like some characters were never really developed and it pulled the montage trick a few times), but really fun. I was surprised that there were even a couple of bits near the start that made people (and me) jump a couple of times.

I thought the CGI was decent for what it was trying to accomplish and it looked good enough in 3D, but largely just the action sequences (it's the only time I felt I really noticed it in effect).

Also, the sunlight thing. Yeah, it does kinda go against that (which is weird since it their overall depiction is largely classic vampire). I didn't notice a bit where it says they evolved to tolerate the sun, but I did notice Dominic Cooper early on puting on sun cream and when Abe goes to kill the Pharmacist there is a large poster advertising sun cream with the words 'cure for sun burn' or similar, but even then it's nothing overt and the rest of the film does little to address the issue (some vampires are covered up and wearing shades, some aren't).

The torture porn genre is already basically dead.

Oh, what a shame. lol
