Accent Sense

I wish more English people did speak with an upper class tone, I'm so sick of every teenager talking like "Knaaa wha Ah meen, yeh blud innit."

yeah thats irratating but everyone talking like the royal family would be annoying as hell.

the northern ireland accent is a killer, its either painful on the ears or people like it

though i do like the fact that when i vist the states girls love it :D

accents are cool. Who would want to live in a world where everyone sounds a like.

First of all Britain has a million and one different accents just like America does. Just like someone in Queens New York doesn't sound like someone from Alabama, Someone from London doesn't sound like some from Liverpool.

Only a hand full of British people speak in High Class Cambridge accents. The average person you meet in Britain doesn't sound like that. Its only in your Holllywood movies that everyone talks like that.

The English language and accents are always changing. How people speak and use words from 100 years ago is different to how people speak now.
In london the tradional cockney accent is dieing out. Most young people speak in jamacianized english as influenced by immigation over the last 50 years.

Lots of British bands in the past most likely sing in American accents as the music they growed up was by american singers and bands. The Beatles and Rolling Stones listened to Chuck Berry and Little Richard so tried to sound like them.
Some American bands like The Killers Sing in British accents.

Not all bands and singers do sing in american accents. Its more noticeable to you guys because the bands that make it big in the states may sing that way.

I can give some likes to British bands music viedos that do sing in their own regional accent.

cockney, no?

how come most British people lose their accents when they sing?
Also strange that really bad stutterers do not stutter when they sing (Mel Tillis).

I would say to a stutterer, try singing everything you say, as if you're in an opera.

Another question: Can people completely and permanently lose their accents?

What would this guys accent be called:huh:

English people don't have accents. We can just pronounce things properly.

....though on the subject of accents... how do people get Gay accents? Is there some gay town they all go to where they pick it up? it makes no sense.

I stutter, though not very badly. I don't think singing everything they say would help because songs are prewritten whereas everyday conversation is spontaneous. The only times I really stutter are when I'm giving a speech and my outline is not up to par (or I didn't practice beforehand AT ALL) or when I get really excited about a conversation and my mouth can't keep up with my mind.

Of course if you were being sarcastic about the singing thing then I was totally lying to you about stuttering and I actually coach Obama on how to seem genuine while being political at the same time during speeches.

Yes, I think so. I can barely recal the way I used to sound when we lived in Ireland. I can only speak like that again when I get off the phone after talking to one of my relatives out there, and that fades again.

New question- To those of you who aren't American: do you read American characters with American accents, or native ones?:)

I saw the guy that plays the main character from HOUSE on Jay Leno a little while back and I've always wondered this:

How come when actors with a foreign accent speak normally, they have a relatively high pitched voice but when they speak with a standard American accent for a role it is much lower in pitch?

maybe it makes it easier to mask their natural accent

British accents are great and so varied. I like Scottish and Welsh, best. :yay:

A brit can do an american accent easier than vice versa.

Americans make fun of other languages (like Chinese...ching chong chang). How do Chinese make fun of english? Do they all think we still talk like John Wayne?

I've often wondered the same thing myself.
