Accent Sense

A brit can do an american accent easier than vice versa.

Hmm...only some brits. Jude Law couldn't hold an American accent if his life depended on it. Whereas Bale has no problem.

Americans make fun of other languages (like Chinese...ching chong chang). How do Chinese make fun of english? Do they all think we still talk like John Wayne?

Remember that episode of south park when the kids were playing volleyball in china. The chinese announcers started making fun of american accents. They would hold their eyes open wide and round, "I think I will use my credit card."

Another question: Can people completely and permanently lose their accents?

They can lose their accents. I don't know about perminantly. My family is from Queens New York. We moved down to Southern Maryland 23 years ago. My parents still have a slight accent. I can only really hear it though when I hear their voice on tape. I've tried my hardest not to lose what accent I have left. You can only hear it though when I say words like "Larry" or "marry". My aunt who moved down here like 30 years ago still sounds like she just moved down here yesterday. She sounds exactly like Fran Dresher (sp).

That being said, I love New York accents. I ran into a girl who was visiting here from Long Island and I fell in love with her.

I HATE southern accents. I hate the really southern maryland backwoods accents who pronouns wash like "warsh". "Let go to Warshington D.C." ugh. I also dislike Georgian accents. I had a teacher from Georgia and her accent was like nails across a chalk board.

I agree...southern accents have no appeal to me AT ALL.

Long Island girls do sound pretty hot.

I was in school and met this girl from Minnesota. She was very cute and I finally got up the nerve to speak to her...then she lost any and all appeal that she had in the first place by speaking. Her accent killed any sexiness that she had to begin with...for me at least. Shallow? Maybe...but it literally made me want to choke her.

I know a lot of people that say "warsh" and I'm from Philly. Speaking of Philly we also say "worter" instead of "water"

i speak three languages and ive moved around alot, and sometimes i talk in all those languages at the same time, very weird.

Perhaps because the American accent seems much "harsher" than a British accent. I think it's easier to make your voice more "flat" than it is to make it sound more eloquent.

Most people that aren't from the south tend to view people with southern accents as less intelligent. Usually in cartoons or movies the idiot is the one with the drawl. King of the Hill is one of the few that doesn't go that route though.

I don't think that they are less intelligent...but I can't get the thought that people with southern accents aren't part of some good ol boy system. Especially when it comes to work.

I hate it when people try and do my accent. Most of them either eff it up or end up doing a parody that is, quite frankly, insulting.

I have a southern accent but it's not the kind where I totally butcher words. Like saying "Warsh" instead of "Wash."

I've tried to lose my accent but my entire family and friends have at least a little accent so its a hard task. I just figure if I can use words properly then I'm good to go.

I don't really like any accents outside of my own (I have the General American accent.). I used to love almost all accents, but now they're just harsh on my ears for whatever reason.

I have lots of questions about accents, which will be the subject of this thread, hence the title which suggest accents will be involved in some way, which in fact is the way in which I have already indicated.:)

Actually, it isn't entirely accurate. I had many questions about accents, but I've since forgotten them since i was too lazy to make a thread asking them in hopes of getting responses that provide true answers. :csad:

However, I do remember one, which I thought about while I was on the bus earlier:

how come most British people lose their accents when they sing?

Thank you for taking the time out to read this thread. i only wish I could've come up with a more clever title.:cmad: :word:

Preach it, br:huh:ther.

I think British people are more exposed to american accents through films, tv and music. I don't think most americans are exposed to modern British culture. Its like that movie Holiday that came out last christmas. The film was made by Americans and the scenes in england where filmed of what most americans thought britain was like.

Which by the way I don't have a problem with or thing its a bad thing but some people can't tell the difference between movies and reality.

Also when ever americans do a british accent they always try to do a hugh grant /RADA stage actor accent. The only american actor i have seen do a regional accent instead of the standard BBC accent is Josh Hartnett in blow dry. He does a yorkshire accent.

I think Southern accents are ok.

I was completely sold by it with one guy I dated when I first got in the trade...I thought it was kind of sexy and so was he. Now that I'm around it all the ****ing time at work I want to kill myself.

When Persians make fun of English accents they say stuff like "Sexy Mexy" or "Vhat eez up! Dat eez so heep" but english people dont know how to make fun in return. All they can think of is Arabic and they say stuff like "Falallalalalala! Durka! Jihad!" But persian languages aren't even CLOSE to that. In fact Persians make fun of Arabic the same way.

Yeah and a pretty bad Yorkshire accent at that, but ill give him a pat on the back for trying:woot: . Ive watched American news stations like Fox and CNN when they do news stories in different cities in England other than London, like in Leeds or Manchester and they put subtitles on for the Americans to understand what they are saying. I would find it quite Embarrassing if i needed to read subtitles to understand someone who speaks the same language as me.....:csad: ...:woot:
