The Force Awakens Adam Driver as Kylo Ren

I kind of don't think that Kylo will have his mask in the next movie. He left it behind in the base that blew up so it would make sense from a purely continuity standpoint that he wouldn't have it. He also has those new scars, so Disney/Lucasfilm will want to capitalize on that by creating and selling new toys. But most importantly, it would be symbolic of him perhaps finally forming his own identity separate from just being a Darth Vader worshiper.

Wonder if it's possible that Kylo might fail and get killed by Snoke, only to have Snoke become the real villain? Not that I want that, but it would be surprising.

I could see that happening. Han did tell Kylo that Snoke would kill him once he got what he wanted out of him (or something along those lines).

What is it he wants though? That's an unanswered question.

A very good question. He wants Luke Skywalker for sure, but why? Just to kill him? To gain some knowledge about something? To prevent him from training Jedi? Or something else...

I'm going with to gain knowledge. Snoke I believe is the one who taught Kylo Ren how to extract information from minds. Luke knows something. What exactly?

Could be anything. Usurping his power, drawing Luke out of hiding, etc.

I like the mystery.

Me too. I wonder how much power Snoke actually has...maybe the twist is he has no real power at all and is using Ren as a tool to make up for the power he lacks?

Kylo idolized Vader, but not Anakin Skywalker. He clearly admires the look and the representation of Darth Vader.

Vader wouldn't stand for the tolerant of incompetence of his subjects

The Empire Strikes Back

I really wish we get a glimpse of Ren's thoughts after he killed his father. It appears that in the TFA novelization, the writer delved into the mindset of Kylo Ren right after the act, and he was more regretful and wasn't happy about what he had done. I guess Abrams didn't want to slow the movie down since it was a quick edit to the fight in the snow, but it would've given the audience something to chew on for Episode VIII.

Yeah I hope in future episodes, they really delve into the psychology of Kylo. We got a bit of that in TFA when he tells Han that he feels like he's being torn apart. I hope we get more insight into his internal struggle in the future. I almost got a sense that he wasn't really supportive of Hux using the Starkiller to wipe out a bunch of planets. Anyone else pick up on this or am I just imagining things?

I thought it was because Hux was more confident and Snoke thought it was a good idea. Ren seems to be all about making his master believe in him

Palpatine used lightsaber alot in his rise to power, probably didnt need to much afterwards. and Kylo rens is not fully trained

Let's be honest though. Palpatine using a saber went against what the Original Trilogy showed, which was that Lightsabers were only Jedi weapons, not Sith weapons. Palpatine was shown as being bemused by them, referring to them with a hint of disdain.

The fact that the prequels turned this around and had Palpatine jump around and ninja flip like the rest of the Jedi, isn't because they planned to make Sith just evil versions of the Jedi all along, it's because by that point they knew that the flashy lightsaber battles were the things the audience most responded to. It's the reason ROTS is almost 1/4 just lightsaber battles.

So I have a friend on Facebook who REALLY hated Kylo Ren, declared Adam Driver to be worse than Hayden Christensen, and called him "the wangstiest villain since Severus Snape." Just seems to me that him and so many people just don't understand such a complex character.

Nah I disagree. A lot.

I liked Kylo Ren, but I dont think he's that complex of a character and I dont feel that's why certain people didn't like him.

People like your friend are in the minority so it's all good

I have some issues with the movie but I can't understand the criticisms against Kylo Ren at all. Other than Vader I'd go as far as to call him the most compelling villain in the series.

I agree. He was the best part of the movie for me. Three-dimensional and compelling.

Adam Driver is a great actor (I'm used to his comedic roles so I was really interested in how he would portray a villain) and I think Kylo Ren works great as this neo-Anakin type of character. He's impetuous, conflicted, immature, but Driver doesn't make it over the top at all. He basically manages to nail all these personality traits that Hayden should have with Anakin.

At the very least, he's a better actor than Christensen.

I can see why some people would be disappointed in Kylo Ren. He makes such a powerful impression in the first scene, he's like this terrifying badass villain who stops lasers in mid-air... and then the movie's like, um actually he's this petulant young dude with daddy issues who gets beaten up by an untrained rookie. So then people feel cheated.

I really liked what I've seen of him so far, but at the same time his background and motivations are so sketchy it's like the movie is asking viewers to create these fanfics in their minds to fill in the details. I felt like I was watching a tail end of an arc that all happened offscreen. Also, I wish the movie showed him drawn to the light side, rather than just have him talk about it to his grandfather's skull.

I thought that they should have made him retreat or something in the fight against Rey, instead of face plant and got defeated completely. As a former WWE watcher, I think Kylo Ren is like a rising star the company is trying to sell to the fans as this unstoppable power, and then in his first major PPV event, he lost to a newcomer with clean tap instead of a DQ. I think for the sequels, it will be difficult to sell him as the Big Bad of the First Order, like the marketing for TFA would have you believed. I think Supreme Leader will fill that void, but I doubt he will be able to sell as many merchandises as Ren does.

Agree with everything you said here. :wowe:

I assume that since at the end of TFA he is on his way to complete his training under Snoke, in EP VIII he will be known as DARTH REN….
