Adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline

This oddly looks good but Push will get my money this weekend:(

GMA interview with Coraline voice actors Dakota Fanning and Terri Hatcher.

On a side note, Fanning has apparently reached that age where it's obvious she's going to be really hot, but we men are still not allowed to point that out because it would be creepy in a "To Catch a Predator" kind of way... :o

i haven't really been watching a whole lot of tv, but how's the marketing for this movie?

It's as decent as any other movie. My neice and nephews have been staying with me and watching Nick, and I see the ad's a lot on that channel. I see it again on other channels from time to time. I saw the latest tv ad that interviewed people who got to see the sneak premiere (haven't seen a movie tv spot like that in...years). They seemed to like it (but they always do in those ads).

Of the two Dakota Fanning movies coming out Friday, this one will be getting my money and attention. It'll be in 3D, and that's enough gimmick to get me into a seat rather than people who can do things with their minds.

Was "Coraline" a comic book or a novel by Gaiman?

I didn't like Stardust at all, but I'll definitely see this.

I remember Chud.com campaigning for Stardust, right?

I saw it with my friends. It was..okay. I think the problem of it was that it tried too hard. The jokes were hits and misses, the visual effects were surprisingly average, and the story wasn't as involving as it should be. It's not a bad movie, but it's not a great one either; it's just a harmless but forgettable flick.

this movie should get nominated for an oscar for its music...

So, Full Disclosure-as much as I was excited for a Gaimain inspired film, I had pretty much no expectations of this film. I didn't know much about the plot, and I'm not hugely familiar with stop motion. I say this because I know there were some on these boards that were disappointed about the differences from the book, and thus didn't enjoy the film. I am not among these people. I was absolutely enchanted by Coraline. If I were 8 years old this would be exactly the kind of movie I would watch so much I would wear the tape out :D. The story is scary (maybe a little much for the really wee ones) but it's the kind of scary that the hero is able to overcome, and thus the viewer doesn't mind it as much (similiar to how Roald Dahl books could have thier scary moments). But what I really loved was how rich in detail the film was. Little effects and background things scattered around made me want to explore the world with Coraline. I fully intend on reading this book now. 10/10 for me.

reminded me of The Thief of Always several times throughout.

Took my nephew to see this (just took him so I wouldn't look creepy in a theater with a bunch of parents and little kids).

Differance between the book and film aside..far beside..because it doesn't matter. Coraline was an amazing visual movie. The 3D was used just right to add layers and the stuff popping out at you wasn't gimmicky. The whole film just felt so warming with a bit of a wind chile.

I really liked Coraline and I think everyone else in the theater like it too. My nephew thought it was the best movie he'd ever seen (he's 7, cut him a break...he watched Repo The Genetic Opera before we went to the theater so....haha).

Some say Dakota Fannings voice adding fails to be speicial, that's true, but her voice isn't at all distracting or bad. It fits into the character of Coraline to be a bit of an uptightish kid in a new place. Besides, it doesn't even matter because there's more positives than negitives in this film. I will state the only big problem for Coraline is the pacing of the first act. It's slow....real slow....borderline boring slow. But once you get past the first 35 minutes, it becomes more entertaining. That first hill of boringness is the hardest part to get through, visualy stunning, but pacing the story could have been a bit better here.

At 101 minutes, it sadly does feel a bit longer. I can understand that stop-motion is a process that doesn't allow many takes or editing to fix pacing issues and you are usually left with what is filmed no matter how long or short the scene is. But this was the only big issue I found with the film.

Everything else, story, 3D effects, characters (the added emo kid, Why B, sort for Why Be Born, was interesting and worked well for the film to add another character when without him Coraline would be very depressing to see a kid be very alone in her new home.). The stop-motion itself is a masterpiece. The sets used are very detailed and you really see the pride the filmmakers had in this film.

All in all, Coraline gets an 8/10.

Saw it -- loved it. 9/10

It doesn't have the gonzo, show-stopping qualities of The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it's quiet and weirdly beautiful throughout. There are some crazy laugh-out loud moments too of course, but overall a thoughtful, visually striking film.
Go see it in 3-D now.

I got that vibe just from watching the trailers.

I think I'll see it this weekend since it sounds like alot of people liked it.

A tip to not look creepy. Go in with a note pad and a pen...makes you look like a reviewer. Or, drive up in a markless white van, get out wearing a trench coat and a hat and then sit up in the top corner of the theatre.

I got the GN from the library, I wanted the book but it didn't look like they had it. Bugger.
I'm thinking about seeing it tomorrow or Thursday while the kids are in school.

haha...

I thought about The Thief of Always when the poster was revealed, but tried to block it. Now that I've finished the GN there's no denying the glaring comparison.

American Gods and Imajica are pretty similar, too. Dang it.

Saw it today, pretty goddamn adorable. Although the other mother looks like a character from something else when she shows her true form.

Stay for the very end of the end credits for some trippy stuff with the mice. Also, the GN was a bit different, no Wybie, and a few other things.

I'm glad the movie is betting expectations at the box office. That only means more movies from Laika Studios!

Saw it in 3-D last night and I loved it. The visuals were fantastic and the music added an extra layer of creepiness to it. Really spectacular.
And who else can't get the other father's song about Coraline out of their heads??
