The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Admitting Disappointment

Nothing feels worse (entertainment speaking) than waiting hours at midnight on a Thursday for something you are overly hyped about to then feel angry or feel as if you wasted your life watching it.

It's better to be surprised than to be let down. Worst case scenario is you walk out ambivalent like you walked in.

The months of hype can be a pretty fun experience, even when the movie ends up being disappointing. I have pretty fond memories of the pre-release days of Superman Returns, for instance. By the end of the ordeal you will have probably released more endorphins by being hyped than by not.

But yeah, denial is a side effect. Take it or leave it.

You've never been disappointed after seeing a movie you thought would be better?

Of course I have, TASM 2 is one actually, but having expectations for a movie is a totally different thing.

There is a big difference between 'I hope this movie is going to be great and I am encouraged by what I've seen thus far' and 'THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE AWESOME AND DAMN EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES!' Most people are the former, but this being the Internet we do get appearances of the latter. There is a reasonable level of expectations and there is going way beyond that.

And then there's the people who say the movie's gonna suck before they see it.

And then there's the people who say the movie's gonna suck before they see it.

The one the amazing spiderman movie had before its release was insane. Not only were alot of people hating on the film, are pessimistic, and are using every harsh words imaginable but the way they do it was like a pack of satan's demonic children tormenting it non-stop. I mean if you had been there it would've been driving you crazy

The same is true in reverse of course. The big difference being that if people really think a movie is going to suck that bad, they simply won't go and see it.

I'm kinda glad I wasn't around here in 2010 - 2012.

Yes.

People still go see the movie, even if they think it's gonna suck, though. Levi, ANE, Webhead, Chaseter saw it, all with real low expectations.

Having high expectations and being disappointed go hand in hand more so than not. Yes sometimes high expectations are met but that's the exception. Having no expectations vs having high expectations and it being a good movie are the same. Having no expectations vs having high expectations and it being a mediocre or bad movie means one person was let down.

I would even argue that having no expectations makes you enjoy the movie more than expecting things. IMO it's a win/win to go in with no expectations.

Point is, they're two sides of the same coin. Nobody seems to look down on the former, but I think it's just as foolish to assert or guarantee that a movie will be good as it is to say the opposite.

Like Kahran said, there's reasonable, and then there's taking it too far. You can be reasonable with your expectations while still being optimistic or apprehensive (heaven forbid) about an upcoming movie. Throwing out guaranteed predictions is pretty unreasonable, there's no two ways about it. Anybody who has ever seen an outstanding trailer for an awful movie can attest to this. I'll go ahead and say that I see a lot more of the "This movie is gonna be awesome!!!" A lot more than I see the opposite, around here anyway (before anyone throws the IMDB trolls in my face as if that's an argument). Happens every time trailers, screenshots, and tv spots start dropping for an upcoming fan favorite. Yet the same people who fly off the handle in that manner will chastise someone who expresses even mild apprehension or disappointment (Jeez, stop being so whiny and negative; stop complaining! YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET OMG). Reading over the BvS threads is probably the best place to get an example of this right now, but it does indeed happen everywhere, every time. I think that what people need to realize is that we're all fans here, whether you've enjoyed a particular movie or not.

The fan community would do well to be a lot more tolerant of others, but it seems like there's a large contingent of fans who are more content to have an exclusionary circle-jerk than anything else. Negativity that comes from a good, earnest place gets far more scrutiny than the zealous, dogmatic worshipping displayed by some fans around here. The sad part is that these folks are the ones who scream the loudest about wanting their opinions respected and their voices heard, yet they do everything they can to discredit and silence people who feel differently. I'm reminded of when someone created a thread complaining about the perceived bias of critics against this franchise...after only 50 or so reviews had been posted. That's just sick.

Even in spite of how I feel, I'd still say that this is a pretty good community, all things considered. Be that as it may, this place has a long way to go.

I honestly loved this movie and wasn't skeptical until I came home and found out I was supposed to hate it. Overall, I believe that this movie is the best SM movie yet as it gave what I wanted most out of it, which was a Spidey true to the comics without a whiny love story (to me this love story was more well done with better chemistry between the leads). It probably also helped that I watched all of Spectacular Spider Man in preparation for this movie. It's like watching a live action version.

I loved Spider-Man 2 as well and is overall the best written Spider-Man movie, but the fact that Tobey and Dunst had a horrible, long, boring relationship coupled with the fact that Spidey himself was ok is what holds it back for me.

My biggest disappointment overall is that SM2 and ASM2 have polar opposite strengths and weaknesses. I believe Webb needs a co-director or something when making the next movie.

And then there's the people who say the movie's gonna suck before they see it.

Based on what I had seen before the movie came out, it looked like another Spider-Man 3. But I never said the movie was gonna suck. I always go into a movie with an open mind.

The only thing I said sucked before the movie came out was the costumes. Green Goblin and Rhino especially. They just looked like crap.

Indeed. It does goes both ways.

Still, I'd rather listen to someone constantly excited, instead of someone constantly complaining.

Even if they're from the same coin, they're the still opposite sides.

But don't get me wrong, I can see why people have problems with this movie, but it's just that the "it's gonna suck" attitude pretty ****ing boring. I would not wanna be around a person like that in real life. I just think it's a pretty sad way to spend your time and energy.

Yes, there are people who go in with open minds, too. I always do, regardless of anything.

How did you like the first ASM, by the way?

I enjoyed the first film, but it has it's flaws. I didn't care for the Lizard design. Also thought he should have had more of a backstory with his family. There's a few other minor things I would change. All in all, it's about equal, if not better than Raimi's first Spider-Man.

Kewl.

I actually rewatched SM1 like 2 weeks ago or something. God damn, that movie did not age well for me. It used to be my favourite Spidey flick, bar none - it's now just slightly above SM3 on my list. :(

I might have to give Raimi's trilogy a re-watch sometime in the next few weeks. My Spider-Man rankings go like this.

1. Spider-Man 2
2. The Amazing Spider-Man
3. Spider-Man
4. Spider-Man 3
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

You should.

And wow, you really didn't like ASM2. :(

No. I'm really glad other fans enjoyed it. It just wasn't to my liking.

Everybody is different when it comes to taste I thought the movie was a lot better than The Amazing Spider-Man which i did like but that movie has a higher RT Score the same goes to Spider-Man 3. The movie wasn't a bad movie it's just people expected a lot more I walked out of the theatre with a smile on my face so I know I liked it and I'm looking forward to seeing it again

I had a lot of reasons to think this would be the best Spidey/ one of the best CBM's ever. TeeKay's early review, John Campea's sources saying that this was "Spider-Man's Dark Knight", epic footage. I loved everything about the movie release before it came out. So when the reviews came out, and the percentage started sinking lower and lower. I thought the critics didn't know wtf they were talking about. So, a huge mistake happened. I went into the theaters with the same expectations I had back in March. The movie ended and I wanted to love it so much, that I loved it, even though I didn't. I did not want to be disappointed by something I had waited nearly 2 years for, so I didn't. However, after nearly 2 months of thinking it's starting to hit me by how disappointing this movie is. Yes I gave it an 8/10, but I was expecting so much more, I was expecting this to be my favorite CBM ever. But it didn't live up. This is a huge lesson for the future Spidey movies. And that's to lower my expectations, at least until the reviews come in.
This is how I felt about Spider-man 3 when it came out. Granted I was like 14 at the time, but it really did disappoint me in a big way and taught me to never get my hopes up that high for a movie ever again.
