ulture minister Lindsay Blackett confirmed Wednesday that part of a $200-million Hollywood film will be shot in Alberta. He would not name the film, the director or the studio behind it, but did say that the production is expected to spend roughly $35 million in the province.

He said he expects an announcement to be made within two months.

An industry insider told the Herald that this likely means Superman: Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder's big-budget reboot, will have a unit shoot here. Another source confirmed that producers behind Man of Steel have been looking at Alberta, but said nothing has been confirmed.

The Warner Brothers movie is expected to start filming in Vancouver in the summer.

"I would expect there will be an announcement in the next 60 days about a significant picture, a blockbuster to be shot in Alberta," says Blackett.

"There might be one that is a $200 million, but it's probably more like a $35-million Alberta spend. The details are fairly intricate right now. That's a big-budget movie for us. The success of Inception and all the good comments made by the crew and actors and director go a long way. That is a movie that made a lot of money."

This is mostly speculation, and forgive me if I missed the main thread on this... but this is big. I'm also leaning towards this being Superman, especially since Producer Nolan had a good experience shooting there. If they're spending 15-20% of their budget in one spot, that's a major scene, and the only things that belong in the arctic wilderness for Supe are the fortress or possibly some interpretations of Krypton.

I'm seeing a big sequence at the fortress, or what will become the fortress. Sounds like fun. Am I overthinking this?

if it's that kind of climate there, than it's possible that it is the FOS

Good call! Pictures from Alberta:

IF they're shooting FOS in Alberta, i hope they make it look different from the previous versions. Alberta doesn't look like the Arctic where it's all snow and ice...there's grass, trees, rocks, etc....it would be cool to see those incorporated into the new FOS's design.

for the inside they would of course make a set. more control over lighting and filming.
the batcave was also a set.

i dont care. locations are always good for movies.

or maybe smallville scenes??

I'm thinking its more for Smallville than FOS...they shot the Smallville scense for Superman:TMP and Superman 3 (Heck Calgary filled in for Metrpolois in 3) in Alberta. They could use the Rockies for FOS if need be but I'm sure its Smallville stuff

^ Smallville would not a have a $35 million dollar Alberta shoot.

I dont see how The FOS would either, it could be done in a large studio.
I doubt they really went to the artic for SR's FOS scenes..but who knows what they'll do this time around.

GreenKToo, i've never worked on a farm but i think that last pic is a bit much for just 2 people to be running it...hehe.

$35 million is more than 1/5th of what they're spending on whatever movie they're doing. if this is indeed for Superman, then i can't see them spending that much on the Kent's farm. it's possible they could use other parts of Alberta for Smallville but i doubt it. on the other hand, they don't necessarily have to shoot $35 million worth in Alberta for the FOS seeing as how much of that can be shot in a studio set.

Lol, yeah..I was just trying to make the point that alberta is not all mountains and snow and could be a good stand in for kansas.
Maybe they'll film both the SV and the FOS scenes there, I don't know.

I assumed it'd be the Kent farm cause there is farmland in Alberta but maybe it is for the FOS

I don't understand how they could do the FOS there. Could it pass for the north pole in some places?

when you get up in the northern part, it's extremely cold and sparsely populated.

Hopefully it's the FOS and hopefully they get it right this time, staying away from that crystal nonsense. Superman should build the FOS himself. And no Jor-El AI this time either.

if they want to separate this movie from the previous ones, giving the FOS a different setting would be a good move. even though most of the time in comics the FOS was portrayed in the arctic, it was also portrayed in the Andes and the Amazon rain forest...so i wouldn't be surprised if they want to change it up a bit.

but then again, like i said, depending on what they wanna do with the FOS most of that can be shot in a studio. either way, we're not even sure that they're talking about Superman. it's all just speculation.

I doubt they'll recycle the crystal fortress again. If they're actually trying to seperate themselves from the Donnerverse, it would be stupid to use something so closely tied to it.

And definitely agreed on the Jor-El AI.

I vote for Smalville and it is going to play a big part in the movie...

MOre of the hypocracy of Hollywood & the celebritys, they do political grandstanding on award shows against the corporate machine, yet they are fine to go make their millions shooting a movie outside the USA.

Anyhow....I hope the Supes reboot is well done and puts Supes back on the map. Please bring on Darkseid.

i'm gonna have to side with those who think it's Smallville (if they're shooting for Superman). it looks like a country town, SV will play a big part in the movie (as SuperDaniel said), and it will be a summer shoot (meaning they might not have to wear long sleeves to stay warm).

If it's a 35 million shoot it's more than likely that it's for BOTH FOS and Kent farm. Plus it's not that far away from Vancouver, where they would supposedly film Metropolis according to rumor...:o

Haha, I was just thinking why would it have to be one or the other when I got to this post. I think for that price it would probably be both locations.

Alberta has a lot of different landscapes, if they do end up having clark in the midst of a war in another country like birthright, they could possibly be filming those scenes there too. Between that and smallville it would justify the 35 million.
