Alex Garland Directional Debut "Ex Machina"

Is there excessive gore in this movie? I'm just curious. It doesn't seem like the type of movie that goes all robo-apocalypse on the audience.

Nope, no Hostel levels of gore.

Film was incredibly interesting, and I'm still thinking on it almost an entire day after seeing it. Oscar Isaac stole the show in this though!

I thought Alicia Vikander stole the show as Ava. Her performance was incredibly nuanced and haunting.

Great performance. But I can't go so far as to say she stole the show, because all three leads did so well.

This is one of the best movies of the year. See it twice, and you will feel like you are seeing two different stories. It is quite clever.

Saw this last night, wow what a brilliant film! Agree with everyone else, just really well-done.

I ended up feeling like this movie was like a high-budget 2-hour episode of The Outer Limits—not that there's anything wrong with that since I loved The Outer Limits (the 90s series at least, haven't seen the 60s series), just saying that as a point of comparison. Definitely had a similar sort of feel with allegory, consequences, and pontification on a sci-fi subject, and the fact that it was very dialog-heavy, and operated mostly intellectually. Plus the way that it ended really had that Outer Limits vibe, but saying anything more would give it away.

It had some breathtaking landscape scenery too, loved those shots of the outdoors (which were apparently filmed in Norway).

Wasn't expecting nudity at all either so it was a relative shock to see full frontal and back female nudity in the way that it was shown, but since nudity was standard course for The Outer Limits, I guess I shouldn't been surprised. Alicia Vikander was definitely hot from the front and the back though, at least if that was actually her and not a body double. ;)

I recommend a listen to Jeff Goldsmith's Q&A Podcast with Alex Garland. It's great.

This finally showed in my theater, so I went before it left, and goddamn, did I love this movie. I was completely blown away by it. I kept thinking Nathan was a robot, and the whole thing was a test, but I didn't see the ending coming.

Great movie. Loved it!

Anyone want to start a thread for his next film? It already has Natalie Portman as the lead with Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton rumored to join. All female cast it seems.

Why did she ask Caleb if he would stay there?

I thought that was odd too.
Maybe she needed to ensure she wasn't going to be stopped by him and need take him out.

She tricked him. She made it seem as if she simply wanted to get dressed for him (for possible robot sex or something which Caleb clearly wanted), when in reality, she was keeping him at bay and ensuring he would be locked away so she could escape alone.

With Caleb locked away, presumably until death, there is literally no one on the planet who could track her, find her, or even know that she isn't human.

Saw it again.

Best movie of 2015 so far. A modern-day sci-fi classic as far as I'm concerned. I can't wait to see what Garland cooks up next.

I missed this key moment towards the end (had to go to the bathroom) so I appreciate the explanation.

This movie impressed the hell out of me; can't wait to see it again.

Just saw it. It kinda left me cold. Didn't really care for it. It accomplished what it set out to do and I don't find any real technical flaws that are apparent but maybe this kind of movie just isn't my thing. This is like an extended Twilight Zone episode. Now i liked TZ but there was a reason they kept those to a half hour in length. This told it's story well, it just wasn't a story that I found to be very interesting. Oh, and SFX are perfect here but then that should be expected in this day and age.

6/10

This was a masterpiece. Oh my, so beautiful... so much to think about and great acting.

I kind of felt bad for Caleb. He was clearly on her side, but she couldn't put herself at risk taking him with her. Eventually, the fact she was a robot would come out and there would have to be some explaining to be done once the body was found. It was cold but necessary.
