Watched Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Predetor recently. AVP was such a letdown.

Unlinke the first three alien films and Predator the characters in AVP are instantly forgettable. I didnt care about any of those characters like I did for Dutch, Ripley, Hicks and even Newt.

Also the character of Charles Bishop Weyland (the only one I remotley remember) was horribly dry, unemotional, and when he dies, I didn't care, or even notice really. Not only that, the movie tells you nothing of his character, except you assume he is rich beyond all comprehension, and he does something with robots. Which to me, seems like just a passing, muttered excuse to have Lance Hendrickson in the movie. There is nothing even remotely clever about his wasted role, and no discernable relation to Bishop, the android of Aliens, is made. It is only assumed, and definitely not explored or even attempted to explore. It also completely disregards the fact that in Alien 3, a man (also played by Hendrickson) claimed he was the designer of the Bishop android...so...it just makes no sense, and it just kind of tries to spoon feed you that for some reason, this is the real creator, and not the guy in Alien 3, and doesn't ever even try to tell you why its right.

I could go on and on, AVP along with Ressurection are disgraces to the previouse films in either franchise. Predator 2 might not be that great but comparred to AVP its a masterpeice.

And yet im looking forward to "Aliens vs. Predator"

Everything Ive heard about it sounds good Director Colin and Greg Strause are saying all the right things. They seem to be doing egzactly what every fan wants. The AICN review was a little harsh but everything since then has sounded excellent.

A lone Predator warrior hunting tons of Aliens with humans caught in the middle and the fact that a clip from the film "rocked Amsterdam" all have me pumped.

You can't seriously be arguing that you liked the characters in Alien 3 more than those in AVP.

Personally, I never thought Hicks had any personality whatsoever, but that's me. Of course, I also strongly like a lot of the cast of AVP - I thought even some of the minor characters were memorable.

What makes you think this sequel has "TONS" of aliens?

i totally agree turtlefocker. i recently watched all the director's cut versions and behind the scenes of the whole Alien Saga and i can't express how disappointed i am with Alien Resurrection and Alien vs Predator. i thought Alien 3 was a worthy sequel but it should've stopped there.

Alien Resurrection and AvP totally missed the point of why Alien was made in the first place...which is to take the horror/sci fi genre and inject some quality and validity into it. Ridley didn't want to do the typical "monster movie"...he made an original, fleshed out movie that's something that's never been done before. Alien Resurrection and AvP has, unfortunately, put both alien's and predator's reputation under the "corny monster movies" classification that they never wanted to be in and i don't think they'll ever get out of.

i hope AvP 2 will do some justice to both of the franchises but i'm afraid the damage has already been done. we'll never see a truly great alien or predator movie for a long time...

the characters in Alien 3, while all having the same hairstyle, were more memorable than ANY of the characters in AvP (yes, even the main chick).....and that's pretty sad considering the characters in Alien 3 were, visually, almost the same.

Personally, I never thought Hicks had any personality whatsoever, but that's me.
true, Hicks didn't have an outstanding personality but that's not what made him memorable. it was mainly his chemistry with Ripley that made him one of the most memorable characters of the franchise. the characters in AvP had practically zero chemistry with one another...

All because AVP had a hack director by the name of Paul S.W. Anderson.

Visually? Try personality-wise, too. They're all the same character except for Clemens, Aaron and MAYBE Dillon, although that's debatable. Everyone else is completely interchangable. They're all just a buncha pissed-off Brits who unload the f-bomb as much as possible.

Oh well. So I love AVP and I feel lucky that I got a movie that went beyond my expectations. I didn't really feel very optimistic about the movie before it arrived, and walked out practically skipping. I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess.

I thought Alien 3 was a good ending (but still not what I would have done) to the series, although I have many problems with the film. Alien Ressurection was just overkill, and AVP was flat out terrible (The Alien and Predator battle scenes were awesome though).

thats how i was for transformers, as for AVP i thought it was going to be badass, i thought it would destroy the whole myth that was those 2 with the previous sagas, left the movie ripping my ticket to shreds. and ripping anyone who enjoyed it.

Am I the only who thinks the Predator costumes in AvP were :word:?

I didn't care for the Predator costumes in AVP at all. The best Pred costume is the one in the second film, imo.

Alien 3 is by far my favourite. Mainly because it has a great feeling that can be summed up in one word. ****ed.

I felt Alien 3 was the perfect end to the Alien saga and made a great "Trilogy" of films. I have never understood the dislike of alien 3 both the directors cut and theatrical cut of that film are amazing. Every aspect of it from characterizations to cinematography and the ending gave excellent closure. While Aliens is by far my favorite with the original Alien close behind I still very much love Alien 3. Now Resurrection? AVP? I have already stated my dislike for them.

But...

I have faith in Greg and Colin!

I am a huge Aliens fan and it pissed me off that 3 out of 4 of the surviving characters (who I loved) were killed off in the first 7 minutes of the film.

While I loved aliens (as I stated its one of my favorite films) I felt that there deaths kind of fit the tone of the Alien films.

The original was very dark as was aliens. The movies to me are like nightmares; I had no desire for them to become upbeat buddy movies with Hicks and Reply warring with the Aliens forever.

I was, ill admit, a little disappointed when I first saw Alien 3 but I got over it before the end credits started to play. And you have to respect Fincher to take such a risk with a high profile franchise.

You would never see Paul Anderson do something like that; he doesn't have the guts.

How come? I thought they were pretty intimidating.

(Continuing from my above post about Aliens and Alien 3)

..And to bring the predator back into discussion.

I have always liked that Predator 2 wasn't the generic sequel. It wasn't "here is Dutch back in the jungle taking on the Predators again" or "Dutch is being hunted by the predators brother from the first movie"

No instead the filmmakers took a risk, completely changed the setting and the human characters. They also brought more depth to the Predators with the end scene on the ship. The movie took a risk like Alien 3 and it worked.

Predator 2 isn't that great of a movie but at least it attempted to be fresh.

Why so much faith in a couple of TV commercial directors? Just because they're talking the same game we've heard before about going "back to the roots"? It's been said for every film since Alien 3 took things down the wrong road.

We should know within the next month or two on what to expect from Colin and Greg.

i thought Clemens, Aaron, Dillon, and Andrews were memorable. the only people who i would consider memorable from AvP, besides Alexa, is Sebastian (barely) and Bishop and that's only because of his previous association with the franchise.

i didn't have great expectations for the movie either but AVP (just like Alien Resurrection) didn't hit my prefered level of standard. AvP cemented both Aliens and Predator franchises under cheesy monster flicks and out of genuine horror/thriller movies...
