I dunno. Depending on how well BvS does, it might not be that far-fetched to see Affleck get a nom. We saw it with Ledger's Oscar win. LotR broke new ground in that way also (Return if the King mainly, for the entire trilogy) for high fantasy.

If BvS 1) is a mega-blockbuster, 2) gets RT score in the 90s, and 3) Affleck's performance lives up to the rumors I think this is actually a real possibility. The Academy likes stories like this where actors beat the odds. The initial reaction to the casting was so negative, and yet Ben gradually won people over and (in this scenario) hits a grand slam. I think it's the type of story that Hollywood likes.

Ledger only got nominated because he died. The LOTR films got nominated because A) they aren't superhero films, and B) they really aren't summer blockbuster type films either.

Well this is going to spark something...

Just saw the Batmobile clip.

Thought that the same thing when I saw a glimpse of that part in the trailer: looks like a video game cinematic.

Not just the cg, but also the visual direction, 'camera' placement, etc.

We'll never know for sure but I don't agree with that.

Ledger only got nominated because he died.

That, and the fact that there wasn't a performance that amazing and instantly iconic and classic in 2008.

Seriously, I'd put that role in the top 20 greatest screen performances ever.

Regardless of whether or not he'd lived to see the 2009 Oscars, I think he would have been nominated. Whether he'd have won....well that's a whole other issue. The Academy has a history of snubbing well acclaimed, finely honed performances, only to then reward the actor years later for a lesser performance as a sort of apology. Case in point - Tommy Lee Jones winning over Ralph Fiennes. Couple that tendency with an aversion to rewarding comic-book film performances, and I have a reasonable doubt as to whether he'd have won, had he lived.

The only thing I'd question is the actual result of him winning, not because he didn't deserve it, but politics in the Academy may have barred a comic book role from ultimately getting the statue. His death may have superseded that, so it's good the actual performance was indisputably titanic.

Nonetheless in a year where Downey was nominated for Tropic Thunder (also a solid turn), I have a hard time believing they would nominate him but not Heath. There would've been outrage.

I think it's true that Ledger dying tragically young was a strong factor for him getting nominated and winning. Whether it was decisive we'll never really know, but it's a fair point to make imho. IIRC the year that Ledger won there was no other performance that clearly blew him away or anything. I think LotR justifiably won because it was a truly remarkable adaptation of a trilogy of novels that many for years believed could never be realized in film. It was an amazing cinematic feat, actually. Return of the King also didn't have that strong competition.

For Affleck to be nominated for BvS it would depend on the competition as well as the success of the film, and just how good Affleck is.

Good luck to everyone trying to get comic con tickets today!

I was able to get my Friday and Saturday badges during the pre-registration sale a few months back. :woot:

I wish hero films could win Oscars. Feels like BvS would be a definate nominee :(

There's so many at this point, someone should just set up a superhero film awards show.

If they were to put all those fan boys in one award show, they would eat each other, and the building would burn down

The Academy members only vote what they get to see -- not what they went to see. In that case, it was WB who submitted Ledger for consideration in nominating him for best supporting Actor (note not leading role).

There was the fact that he was nominated once before for his role in Brokeback Mountain. In fact he was nominated for BAFTA, Golden Globe and several other awards for his role in Brokeback Mountain. He exceed his Brokeback performance in his role as the Joker.

So please stop with this bs about his death being a factor.

*Going off for my afternoon run & exercise.
