Probably not, but there is a reason for that.
Maybe if we are talking about a Liberal Arts education or the value of having good foundations for real world jobs, you'd be right. But we aren't. We are talking about a fandom. People on this board often play advocate just to play advocate.
Gee, I thought we were talking about a movie??? Something you seem to forget on many occasions.
See here is the problem, you were never gonna like that film. Why? Because as you said, you have a selective, and worse, nostalgia fuelled memory of the show. You've built it up so much in your head that no reinterpretation will EVER please you. And you were convinced from months back you were going to HATE that movie. No surprise, you did.
Did I ever say I hated it? No, in fact I gave it a 6/10, which is however below average. I wasn't going to waste my time with you anymore, but since you had to tell me exactly what you think goes on in my head I guess I'll respond. When I say the movie is bad, I mean the MOVIE is bad. I didn't say the ELEMENTS OF THE ADAPTATION are bad. I could care less what they adapt from the different series as long as it makes sense and is a competent, consistent film, which this movie WAS NOT. Hell, I'm one of the biggest Island fans I know, and based on that I thought Bay was finally becoming more than just an action director, but he took a step backwards with this one.
For reference, I was adamant that Live Free Or Die Hard was going to suck big time, and it ended up being the most engaging, thrilling action film I've seen for a long time. I can be objective while watching and later reviewing movies, no matter my initial feelings.
I got news for you, G1 isn't coming back. They may reissue toys, they may recycle names, they may even re air the episodes in syndication. But that show is gone. And that comic is gone. Transformers (G1) wasn't perfect, it wasn't deep, it wasn't adult, and it wasn't progressive...I can end any and all debate on that question right here.
I could say the same things about the live-action movie.
It failed, it was critically bashed, it's movie made 6 million total, and it's show couldn't compete with other cartoons ultimately. It's toyline proved more popular and more beloved than the show itself. Those toys were what made that show popular. If that show had been backed by a sh***y toyline, you guys wouldn't even breath it's name. But it wasn't, so people think it was great.
Again, how do you know that? For someone so into proof, you should be careful putting words into people's mouths. MASK toys were crap and I enjoyed that show, too. Similar to CFlash, I only owned maybe 2 Transformers my whole childhood. But I didn't watch the show because the toys were cool, I watched the show because the show was cool. Why would I watch a show if I already have the toys that I can play with?
But it's been around for twenty three years, and it's gotten better. The shows have gotten better.
Only Beast Wars and Beast Machines were better, I couldn't even sit through a few minutes of any of the new shows. And before you misinterpret, it's not because they aren't G1, it's because the shows are bad.
The toys have gotten better and more advanced.
The only toys that have become more advanced are the Alternators.
The marketing and sales have gotten better. And now we have a Live Action film that has grossed almost 225 million domestic. On top of that the user reviews for it are great, and everyone seems to enjoy it. Everyone but you.
Not everyone, but why not put words into everyone else's mouths while you're at it. I enjoyed some scenes, others I cringed at. That type of inconsistency takes me completely out of the experience. Maybe we'll get a better cut on DVD someday, who knows. But I critique what I am presented with, nothing more nothing less. That being said, it's only 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, 69% Cream of the Crop, while Live Free Or Die Hard is at 80%, 78% Cream of the Crop.
