Am I the only one who HATES Alex Ross's Batman?

Thats the thing i really dont like, they're too realistic, I think he should go for all black armor if he is gonna draw him that realistic.

I really like Ross' work, but I agree that there's something off about his Batman. IMO the problem is that his costume is just cloth and no armor. The realistic looking art and Batmans unrealistic costume creates a contradiction. Sometimes I don't really mind, but there are many times were Batman looks like he just bought a cheap carnival costume or something.

I know you could say the same thing for Superman and WW but they are invulnerable so what they wear doesn't matter. They also don't have a mask which is the part of Batmans costume that looks bad/cheap most of the time IMO.

I would hate his art on the monthly Batman titles, but for mini-series he is perfect.

I really dislike Alex Ross's Batman, im not sure if its the fact he doesnt have white lenses or not, but theres just something i really dont like about it. To be honest i dont like much of his work or his style, however i think his Joker is amazing:

I agree I don't like Ross' Batman as well but I like his Joker as well.
Ross Joker looks Jack Nicholson as Joker.

I agree with that, he looks like a thinner and taller Nicholson though.

I think ross is great as far as pure art is concerned, maybe not so much as far as comic type art, his style is a little too "real" for my tastes, and as someone already said his heoroes look like 50's body builders, guys with names like biff and chip

Alex Ross has one of the most unique and original styles there is.

that's why people don't like him

Falcon, I agree it would be nice if Ross drew Batman with armor once in a while. But he takes the same approach to Batman as he does all heroes - he draws them EXACTLY how they were defined in the Golden Age. He brings old school imagery and icons to to life to show how fantastic and absurd superheroes are. Spandex is a part of that.

come to think of it, yeah, that's pretty much it.

I love Ross's Batman, it's one of my favorites. War on Crime has some of the best Batman art imo.

Alex's work is okay, but it's too golden age with stocky frames and over sized emblems like the bat logo.

I feel he is doesn't like using designs from the post Superfriends era.

Respectfully, it's all subjective anyway. I really don't care to see Batman in armor because the character was never introduced with such in the first place; you can thank the movies for actually starting that. I mean it's a fictional character to begin with so suspending your disbelief really's not much of a stretch. I mean it's a guy gallavanting around the city in a cowl and cape and fighting super-criminals; where's the realism in that? lol
When the dust clears, it's still Bats.

I love the fact that Ross approaches all of his characters in the Golden-Bronze Age manner he embraced in his youth... His Batman looks awesome.

Yeah the reason they use armor in live action, is because it looks silly in reality. If its animation or comic it looks fine, and yes i know Ross does comic, but the realistic look is too much imo. Im not doubting his talent because obviously he has buckets of it, I just dont like the way he goes about putting hero's on paper.

ross' art is absolute genius. his compositions and sequential storytelling are second to none. his anatomy is damn near perfect (if these heroes existed in reality, that IS what their body-types would look like). and his ability to take fantasy imagery and make it work in a realistic fashion is amazing.

agreed

I like Ross as an artist but I get fairly annoyed when all of the male characters (Superman, Batman, & Aquaman particularly) look EXACTLY the same in the face, but with different hair color...BLAH!!

And I don't like his women looking like muscle-builders (in the face) from the 1940s :(

Superman and Batman's faces are completely different in Alex Ross's versions. Superman and Magog have the same face (and with good reason... ying/yang in Kingdom Come). Aquaman's is similar to Superman's but Batman's is completely unique. He's got the brows and beedy eyes.

While I love his art, possibly the one thing I dislike the most are the girls he does.

Don't you like the girls or the fact that he does them? Don't need to answer to this, I'm only joking, trustyside. :oldrazz:

About this very talented guy.
I used to think that his Batman is a bit too chubby but now he seems to be drawing it somewhat differently, I like more the way he is drawing Batman now than how he used to do before. But I never hated his Batman.

People complain that Ross' stuff looks "too realistic" thus making the characters look silly.

Well geez,a guy dressed up as a goddamn Bat is bound to look silly.

For me, it has nothing to do with it looking too realistic - I just don't like how he draws Batman's cowl. Otherwise, I love his art.

His Bruce Wayne is fantastic. I find the ears on Batman's cowl to be just a bit too long, and I really don't like the massive utility belt. It looks like it'd really dig into his abdomen if he were to bend over!

I don't hate his batman, but I don't love it.

More than any of his other characters, Ross' Batman just looks like some dude dressed up in a Batman costume. Also, Batman's pose in that first pic is horribly stiff and silly looking.

Ross has great painting skill's but he has always had problems convey the true spirit of numerous iconic heroes. First, he paints Bats way to old and heavy for man who is supposed to have the agility of an acrobat. He never learned how to utilize Batman as a 2 dimensional shape or silohuette. Its amazing how an oversimplified Bruce Timm drawing displays the look, mood, and elegence of batman's costume to a degree that Ross has never been able to match. On a side note Ross' Superman and Wonder Woman are also to husky and old, I feel the only character he's gotten dead on is Captain Marvel.

Alex Ross captures the Silver and Golden Age perfectly. I never bought that lens B.S. It's impractical and stupid logic. Some fans are just discouraged to see how they would look in a more realistic way.
