Tourist Trap (AKA Nightmare of Terror ~ 1979)
Often-overlooked slasher starring Chuck Connors and Tanya Roberts. A group of five teenagers (two guys, three girls) are driving through an unspecified, isolated rural area of the US when they stumble across a waxworks museum owned by middle-aged, shotgun-toting, dungarees-wearing Mr Slausen (Connors). When their car breaks down Slausen offers them hospitality whilst he tries to help fix it. He tells them the museum is permanently closed due to the the building of a new highway which means traffic hardly ever passes by any more. One of the girls decides she wants to make a phone call, but with the phone in the museum not working she sneaks out to the spooky old house behind the museum to try there. When she doesn't return the other girls go searching for her...
The basic plot is by-the-numbers 'teens in isolated location get butchered by deranged killer'. However, it does stand out by giving the murderer the power of telekinesis - think 'Carrie-meets-The Texas Chain Saw Massacre-meets-Psycho'. Coming just a year after John Carpenter's Halloween the slasher tropes of the 80s were yet to be firmly established; as such there's not much gore, and there's no nudity. But there are some entertaining kills and an atmosphere that gets very creepy, even menacing at times. Sadly, after a really strong start, about a third of the way through it starts to meander and never quite recovers that early pace. Also, there are a lot of things that don't make any sense and leave you scratching your head; this really is one of those films where you have to 'just go with it'.
Chuck Connors is obviously enjoying doing something so different and is probably the most entertaining I've seen him. The other 'name' is Tanya Roberts as 'Becky' (this was a year before she broke through with Charlie's Angels) - who looks absolutely stunning. The score by Italian composer Pino Donaggio (who also scored Carrie, Dressed to Kill, and Blow Out amongst many others) is terrific.
If it wasn't for the lack of pacing that hits about 25 minutes in this would have been an 8/10, easy. As it is, 6.5/10. Still a fun movie.
