Am I the only one who HATES Alex Ross's Batman?

I like Ross as an artist but I get fairly annoyed when all of the male characters (Superman, Batman, & Aquaman particularly) look EXACTLY the same in the face, but with different hair color...BLAH!! (

Other artist do the same thing. Jim Lee & John Byrne are some examples.

I always felt his early work with Batman and Superman made them look a little podgy in places, but as the years have gone on, he's really tightened up their physique's. His work on Justice was fabulous.

I personally don't like his Dc characters they look so old,....his Marvel characters are on point though....

hi -- im a new member ... does anyone know why the system won't let me start a new thread? it keeps telliing me i dont have privileges to do that ... it only lets me reply ... what can i do so that it lets me initiate a new thread? thanks

Ross's Batman looks like Gregory Peck.

I don't mind Ross in mini's but I'd grow tired of it if it were in the monthly Batman title. Great artist, good batman artist...it just...not the definitive way to draw/paint bats.

Then again...what REALLY is?

Alex Ross captures the Silver and Golden Age perfectly. I never bought that lens B.S. It's impractical and stupid logic. Some fans are just discouraged to see how they would look in a more realistic way.

I don't think that is the main reason...the characters just look pudgy. and their costumes look like poor halloween costumes....

The costumes match the comics. Don't blame Ross for making us realize what spandex looks like.

exactly ^. he's paying the strongest respect to the Golden Age.

Ross does the classic 'monumental' style which is reminiscent of statues you see in parks where the figures are massively thick and/or muscled. There's little tapering or porportioning, which is why the figures look 'wide'. While I appreciate his style it doesn't work for me in a comic book...everyone looks jowly and old. If they're already middle aged they look ancient. Square heads, thick necks and jowls. Barrel chests with heavy legs and arms. Thick is good, shaped up thick is better!

He simply draws photo realistically. And in his mind he believe these guys shouldn't look like a cartoon build. I would actually like to see what he would do with a movie version design.

Way i look at it is, why does Superman need to look like such a real middle-aged man? He's an alien God, so he could have taken some liberties there. And then WW has the appearance of a middle-aged lesbian feminist circa 1989. Batman looks totally unathletic. A truckdriver who enjoys a few too many krispy kremes, or a powerlifter, as opposed to the physically imposing yet lithe gymnast/martial artist Batman is.

Other than that i love all his work, Kingdom Come blew me away.

Many wrestlers on TV have a similar build. If you want speed you won't develop too much muscle. Yet building more muscle but won't guarentee washboard abs and ripped definition. It's because one needs to eat more calories to build muscle.

Part of the problem, I think, is that his Batman is such a literal take on the comics costume.

He draws really realitic. And, his Batman looks like what Batman would actually look like in spandex. It's just not pretty, b/c in real life.....a guy like Batman wearing that.....just wouldn't be very pretty.

It's not Ross's fault when reality makes us see how ridiculous supeheroes look. I'm still not impressed with the Batman Begins armor. Drop him on Times Square around noon, and I'll still laugh at him.

Does Batman really go anywhere during the day?

It depends on the case or what the JLA are doing. But fighting at night is just an excuse to not see the costume details. Even at night, whether it be Times Square, Las Vegas, or plain florescent lights, he'll look funny under the light.

To play devil's advocate here, most people don't read comics to know what something would be like in reality.

Batman doesn't just wear spandex. in the comics bats has armour plates under his fabric costume, Ross doesn't try to represent this at all, he just paints victorian body builders in halloween costumes

Before they came up with that excuse Batman was just wearing spandex or silk. Silver Age. Remember, Ross loves the Silver Age. And back then, guys like Jack Lelane and Steve Reeves weren't as big as today's juiced up bodybuilders. You'd never think they were taking drugs. Lee, Benes, McGuiness draw neanderthals and steroid chumps.

I don't like the brow wrinkles. I like Ross's work in general but he should stick to covers. His interiors look motionless.

and he'd still kick your ass

that is unless he remembered to pack his Bat-anti-get-hit-by-rocks-spray, he has a gdget for everything Dammit!
