Am I the only one who's not really a fan of legacy characters?

Yeah, lots of people will accept a new character if the writers let the old one be cool or heroic or movingly poignant when they move him along instead of making him look like a genocidal psycho or a wifebeating *****e or whatev.

It's honestly kind of amazing that comic writers needs to keep relearning this simple, obvious lesson.

That's why the Barry/Wally arguments make no sense...Wally never did anything but pay Barry 100% respect and he is every bit a Silver Age character himself.

And from what I've read, Barry has shown Wally the same amount of respect.

Barry has a comic and Wally doesn't. If Wally gets his own series again, the Barry-haters will be content to just ignore Barry and read Wally's series, much the same way the Kyle fans have been mostly content with GLC. I don't care how much respect anyone pays to anyone else, getting a peek of a character in a supporting role here and there is not the same as following that character as the star of a series.

Wasn't Wally meant to have a back up strip in the Flash ongoing? What happened to that?

Canceled, for some reason. They gave some vague "It didn't quite work out" reason that didn't really make any sense.

And the Kid Flash book that Sterling Gates was supposed to write? Same thing. The whole "We're gonna have a Flash family" direction that Rebirth seemed to hint at has sort of petered out.

Typical. I don't even like the characters and that still annoys me.

They're probably waiting to see how Barry's series does first, just like they let Hal's series run for a while before doing GLC: Recharge. So, in that respect, the sales on Barry's first couple issues are a boon even to Wally fans who hate the guy.

Has Barry's new series been selling well then? I've flicked through the first two issues and was not impressed, myself

The first issue debuted at #2 on the top 100, I think. Second issue only just came out, so we don't have sales numbers for it yet. I'm sure it sold extremely well, though. Everything Johns writes does.

I like the concept of legacy heroes and I think that JSA was best before Johns left the comic. I consider myself biased in the subject and even more my bias goes against the grain of the general thrust of this thread, so...

I do agree that the 2 status quo changes in Firestorm and Atom make no sense at all. Though the Jason Rusch Firestorm character came before DC's attempt at being more culturally/ethnically/gender/whatever diverse, he was still a minority character that broke the mold of the usual hero. Now Ray Palmer will be the only Atom since they offed Cho. Lil' hint DC, if you want to keep past mandates as plausibly deniable...don't replace more than one "minority (or whatever)" character with a Caucasian one.

Firestorm could easily have stayed with Ronnie as the experienced voice guiding Jason while he stayed mostly in the matrix/mental landscape. If there was need for it you could have Ronnie come to the front and switch places with Jason; you know, like what you did in JASON'S comic?! But, apparently, the best choice was to do a flashback to Ronnie's earlier years and turn him into a jerk frat boy just so there would drama. Jerry Springer type drama, mind you, not entertaining drama.

I didn't read much of the newest Atom, but I DO know he came into the role on his own and with great effort. It's a disservice to the character and the writer to waste a character like that. But, I get it... it's not like villains have to kill other characters to make a come back, right? And it's not like you're sending a bad message by doing things like bringing back Prometheus who kills the Global Guardians (a bunch of foreigners, right? Ew!!), sending a black character to the back of the bus and killing one of your "diversity movement" heroes. Anyway, sorry to get off topic; keep discussing. :)

What is this? Return of the lost Hypers day?

It's like that song says: "You can log out any time you like, but you can never leave." *guitar solo*

The proper term is "Tropicowned." Rolls right off the tongue, plus it's appropriate in virtually every situation.
