Another Reason why Activision Sucks

Hey, he brought his family into it, not me. And I'm completely aware I'm an a**hole, and at this point, you all should be too.

I'm tempted to agree with Joker here...just because you have children doesn't make your opinion any more or less qualified

Yes, we are all aware that you are one...but that doesn't make it OK to continue to act that way.

Nowhere in my post did I say that having children made your opinion any more or less qualified than anyone elses....I told him that there was no reason to make crude comments about his wife.

No, you never said that, Brainiac did. His implications of "my family makes my opinion on music games" was what started all of this, and I, maybe rather harshly, was refuting that.

Everyone who's condom ever broke or who's girlfriend lied about being on the pill or was just too damn stupid to use birth control has a god damn kid. Hell, that German guy who kept his daughter locked in an underground torture chamber was married with kids. It doesn't make you special, no matter what the hormones that your body releases to stop you from strangling your own kid tell you. And it sure as hell doesn't make anyones opinions on music or video games more valid than the next persons.

He was telling me to grow up, while using an incredibly childish and naive argument himself, and it pissed me off, and maybe I could have put it more eloquently. But oh well, it's done now, and I'm not at all sorry.

I was watching Heroes last night, this season's premiere, and they featured Activision's Guitar Hero .. which lasted about 15 minutes .. and it was the most annoying product placement I've ever seen..

The first problem is, you were watching Heroes. It's pretty much the Guitar Hero of television shows. It steals ideas, and does them worse than the comics they stole the ideas from, and then everyone applauds like circus seals because they're too stupid to realize that the show has no originality at all.

But this is a rant for a totally different thread.

So um, what's wrong with Guitar Hero?

You guys take it too seriously. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are not made for musicians really. They are made for people who just want to have a laugh and who probably can't play a real guitar.

This "It disrespects the real musicians!" is a load of old bollox.

It's more about evil corporations wanting to make money, apparently Activision is evil because they don't use indie bands and don't innovate enough when they're making money, but Harmonix does, so they're better.

there's a documentary called 'The Corporation' that people should watch....people expect a corporation to act like a person, when it's really not

It may soon get the rights of a person, though. ;)

From a corporate perspective, it doesn't really matter what songs are on which game. But from a consumer perspective or as a person who may like some of those lesser known bands, it's nice that Harmonix uses its power and influence to promote the bands. That's the kind of personal touch that makes people like certain corporations and their products more than others, which can sometimes contribute to changes in the market. Some people may be more likely to buy a Harmonix game, for example, than an Activision game because they perceive Harmonix's games as labors of love while they perceive Activision's as heartless cash-ins. If a lot of people feel that way, the market shifts in Harmonix's favor.

Granted, Harmonix apparently has an ulterior motive if members of the dev team are in Freezepop and other bands they've promoted.

And that makes them not that much different than Activision. It's all about the $$$

HMX may not be perfect, but at least they don't piss over the legacy of Kurt Cobain and let players use him to sing songs from Flavor Flav like Activision does.

I don't see how that pisses over his legacy. They included him as a character in a game. Whether you choose to use him on songs that he would never have played in real life is your business.

they got the rights to use the character...get mad at those who signed off on it

:hehe: Who gives a **** about Kurt Cobain anyway? :D

Na but seriously, it's a character in a computer game. I don't see how that disrespects him.

No, you never said that, Brainiac did. His implications of "my family makes my opinion on music games" was what started all of this, and I, maybe rather harshly, was refuting that.
And you see....that's the problem. He made the statement that his family helps form his opinion of the music and games he plays and watches. He didn't say that it made his opinion better....just different. But you personally attacked him for making this statement. He didn't attack you, he didn't call you names, he didn't say his opinion was better, he didn't say your taste in music sucked....he said his family helped formed his opinion, which is different from yours....and also put in there
Oh, and I personally like Taylor Swift, but to each his own.
to which you replied with the attack of
If you're not a teenage girl and you like Taylor Swift, there is something f**king wrong with you.
So again I say...he didn't attack you, he didn't say his opinion was better....but you attacked him. You have a hate for anything Activision related (and before anyone yells bias....I don't play video games so I couldn't care less about one company or the other) and since he didn't share your hatred for evrything Activision related, you feel compelled to attack him for it.

Everyone who's condom ever broke or who's girlfriend lied about being on the pill or was just too damn stupid to use birth control has a god damn kid. Hell, that German guy who kept his daughter locked in an underground torture chamber was married with kids. This too tells volumes about you. You can't seem to even fathom the thought that someone might actually want to have children for good reasons. It's a shame you are so bitter with life. Not everyone is this cynical. Just as you can point out some news story of someone doing something terrible to thier kids....I can point out news stories about people doing good things for thier kids. There are all kinds of people out there. Good, bad, inbetween. If you spend all your time only looking for the bad....you will find it.

He was telling me to grow up, while using an incredibly childish and naive argument himself, and it pissed me off, and maybe I could have put it more eloquently. But oh well, it's done now, and I'm not at all sorry.
Yes...he told you to grow up. But he didn't call you or your family demeaning offensive names while doing it....he didn't spend time belittleling you for your choices in music. He said
When you're a grown up, you realize that each person has their own tastes, and that's ok, and that there is no need to judge one another based on those tastes...especially when all this stuff is pure minutae.
and he said

No need. I don't rely on the opinions of others to know what I like. My wife and two kids are the only opinions I take into account.

When Joker has kids, it will mellow him out a bit. It's then that you realize that there are more important things than putting that much hatred into a game or game company.
It may have been presumptious for him to say that having kids will mellow you out....maybe he should have said may mellow you out. But those statements in no way merited this
I've heard quite a bit of Taylor Switfs music, and most of it can be boiled down into exactly what I described it as. You finding a wet hole that will let you impregnate and popping out a couple of snot nosed brood doesn't make you any more of a person than I am, either, and it doesn't make your opinions any more valid.

You stepped over the line. You were unnecessarily rude, offensive, and just downright mean. There was no call for it. I'm telling you officially....be more civil in the future.

I loved Nirvana and all, being that they were the band that changed a lot about my views on music when I was in high school, but as for Cobain's "legacy" it's sort of hard to tarnish it any further when the guy is famous for eating a bullet.

Hasn't Guitar Hero been doing this for awhile now, using famous musicians in their games. I remember being able to unlock Slash in Guitar Hero 3 and playing as him in number of songs that weren't worthy of Slash's talent. Or is it different because Slash is alive and Cobain is dead.

Who's to say John Lennon would approve of his likeness being used in a video game that takes far less talent to play than to actually play the songs for real

Meh, and who's to say that Cobain would have rejected the idea nowadays were he alive today. Alot could have changed between then and now.

I know personally none of it offends me. Using dead celebrities to up the credo of said media is nothing new ala Marlon Brando in Superman Returns among other instances.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero are just two more companies doing it as it brings in more money from those who are fans of said dead celebrity.

Slash is alive, and able to say "yes, I don't care if you have my playing these other songs." Kurt is dead, and the guy killed himself partly over being so famous that he didn't feel like a real person anymore. So, no, I don't think he would be fine with it if her were alive today.

With Johh, you're right, we don't know. But Yoko has quite a bit of artistic integrity (whether you like her or not, it's true) and she said she thinks he would be cool with it. We'll never know for sure, though.

It's still not a comparable situation though, as we have John in a beautifully well crafted game that pays homage to him and his music, while Kurt is being forced to sing Bon Jovi songs, when Kurt hated everything Bon Jovi and other hair bands stood for.

Also, the "OMG Harmonix has ulterior motives because they put bands that they are members of in the game!" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. They've been doing it since Amplitude for one reason: A long while ago, when these games first started coming out, they weren't popular. Certainly not popular enough to get the rights to a lot of well known songs. So they put in their own bands, as it was cheaper and easier. They continued doing this up until now because people who play these games have become fans of the bands, and also, because it's still cheaper I would bet. And just because one member of a band works for Harmonix doesn't mean they're the only one getting money off it, the other members who have nothing to do with Harmonix are still getting just as much.
