Ant-Man and The Wasp Ant-Man and the Wasp - Box Office Discussion

Deadline update includes some updated OS numbers.

Disney/Marvel’s Ant-Man And The Wasp has swooped into China with a sizable opening for the size-morphing characters. The early estimates out of the Middle Kingdom see a Friday launch of $23M-$24M which includes Thursday midnights. With the global cume at $471.5M through Thursday, the China addition brings it within a tick of $500M worldwide.

The PROC figures place the Paul Rudd sequel as the 4th best Marvel Cinematic Universe debut day of all time in China. It lands behind Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. This weekend should see the Peyton Reed-helmed film buzz the $70M range in the market. At current rates, the first movie from 2015 opened at about $40M there.

At the international box office, AM&TW has grossed $261.8M through Thursday. It will handily pass $300M offshore this weekend and is currently tracking 29% ahead of the first film in like-for-likes and at today’s rates (this excludes the China Friday). Japan is still to release on August 31.

Again, excluding China for the moment, the Top 5 markets through Thursday are Korea ($42.4M), the UK ($18.9M), Mexico ($15M), Australia ($14.6M) and France ($14.1M)..

I was just debating someone in a YouTube channel's comments section about how he thinks AM/W won't get 100 million from China because it's "too late in the game". I posted the early China results in response and I was like ..... "Nah son" ;)

Nice!

Ant-Man and the Wasp will be released in Japan next week. It would be fun if Rudd and Lilly could make a video with the Kamen Riders (Japanese superheroes), Ant-Man really looks like them :funny:.

Make it happen, Marvel!

Boxoffice.com:

Disney reports that ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is on track for a $23-24M opening day in China (incl. midnights), making it the country's 4th biggest MCU opening day of all-time (behind only AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR).

:wow:.

EDIT:

8.9 on Maoyan!

This movie will end up with the best legs of any MCU sequel to date. Probably like a 2.87X if it stops around $215m DOM. I think TWS previously held the record with a 2.73X

Funny how Ant Man has managed to get the highest MCU solo film (I'm not counting CW as a solo film) opening in China. The MCU is getting huge over there.

I will again beat my drum for an Ant Man v Fin Fang Foom movie set in China. Megabucks guaranteed.

I think about another $136M for the movie will give the 3 MCU films of this year a collective $4 billion. The MCU has already just this year in 3 films made more than all 6 phase 1 films.

Not a bad boost for the overall franchise in these days of superhero fatigue!

Popular Chinese actress for Madame Macabre incoming :cwink:

Works for me. Given that the Ant Man movies have been pretty “meh” in terms of domestic box office, it seems like the perfect Marvel franchise to test a China co-production.

That said, Saturday estimates from BOT’s China-watchers show it basically flatlined Saturday, up just 4% over Friday. So it appears heavily front loaded. Current estimate is $47.6 million through Saturday.

Does that mean 100 million in China is in doubt now?

Nah, it’s fine. Full weekend will be around 66 and audience scores are solid. It will easily pass 100. It does likely mean the glimmer of hope for 650 WW is dead, but it will pass 600 no problem.

That's cool. I didn't think 650 was realistic anyway. I think 600 WW for this movie would be a win.

Japan's not that big for western superheroes not named Spider-man. The first film made $9.6M there. Best case scenario for this films is maybe $15M. That's what happens when you have altogether different and in many ways competing concept of what superheroes are, as Japan does.

Really happy with the Chinese numbers and even if Japan isn’t high, it will still be good to get another boost at this late stage.

Very nice debut in China. Only a matter of time now before it passes $600M.

Officially above the 1st Ant-Man ($519,3 mil) movie at last.

It will end up somewhere between Iron Man ($585,2 mil) and Thor The Dark World ($644,6 mil).

A little bit over/below Iron Man 2 ($623,9 mil).
