Ant-Man Ant-man's reviews thread

Then if they went super big with this it would have suffered the same criticisms AOU did. They honestly can't win with everyone and I actually find it charming they went back to their roots, especially with the spectacle they tried to make AOU.

If I had a dime for every time I've heard this similar sentiment about an MCU cameo. It's simple connective tissue. Try to have fun with it once in a while bud.

Going super big isn't what I'm suggesting, hun. The scale was perfect. The set pieces delivered. It was more the clunky relationship between Pym and his daughter that needed re-working. A lot of the beats were also cookie cutter. It's a testament to how good an actor Rudd is that he made the deadbeat dad-visiting-his-daughter-at-her-birthday-party-when-he's-really-not-supposed-to-be-there work.

Indeed my friend,....indeed. I agree 100 %. This movies rocks on so many levels. Introducing other realities, the great character depth of Lang, Pym, and Hope. The side kicks were truly fantastic also. The weaving in of the established MCU was epic. The fighting sequences are the best of any Marvel movie with the exception being CA: TWS. This was just great entertainment. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, if you think this is just an average movie, then there is simply no pleasing you.

The only knock I have is the same issue that has plagued many other Marvel movies : The Villain. Darren Cross is good at being evil, but he is never truly developed in a way that makes us care. That being said, just awesome stuff. Make mines Marvel !

It is nice the simplicity of this film. I loved AoU, don't get me wrong, but Marvel has become such a behemoth that it was nice to see a film back in the style of Iron Man 1, Cap TFA, and Thor.

I know Guardians was an origin story of sorts, but it was very different. More of a coming together the way Avengers was. I actually enjoy origin stories that are done well, and the way this had a heart to it, it was fun and the visual were spectacular.

Cross and Pym's relationship was like a role reversal of tony and stand in the first iron man. Which, while it could have been more, was fun.

I really liked Cross. Sure the guys a nutjob, but I guess I got the inside joke because in the comics when Pym becomes Yellow Jacket, the guy officially went nuts. That line that Pym deliveres "I saw too much of myself", I totally got what they were going for. I thought it was a unique twist on Pym's character from the comics, who is probably one of the most polarizing heroes in the Marvel Universe. It was like 616 Pym vs Ultimate Pym.

Agreed. I like how (pardon the pun) little this film was. While it did have a lot of connections to the grander scope of the MCU, it still felt like a standalone film. I think it was smart to release this movie after AoU.

And while a lot of people are burnt out on origin movies, I felt like this one was different enough. In a weird sense, this felt like a "back to basics" movie while also offering something new.

I can't wait to see it again. :)

My thoughts on the inclusion of other Marvel characters in cameo roles in this and other Marvel movies....

I have been a member here since 2002 (13 years)...and in that time have read thousands of posts saying - Wouldn't it be cool if this giant Marvel character showed up in this other character's movie - Man I wish they had put this minor character that is connected to this character into the movie in some way - wouldn't it be cool if some other Marvel characters happened to walk through a Marvel movie....it is what everyone begged to happen.

Now....we have major marvel characters showing up for cameos in other marvel characters' movies...we have minor Marvel characters that are connected to a character being included and or referenced in their movies....we have various Marvel characters walking through Marvel movies......and people are complaining about it. I know this is a MARVEL forum....but I definately feel like I am in BIZZARO WORLD.

The comic books are chock full of characters appearing in other books for large roles in the storylines or for just a few panels for fun.

I surprisingly really enjoyed this film! I think my friend and I were laughing the loudest in the theater (which is odd for me)- it was near constant. I was super disappointed in AoU and not expecting anything with this one, and was delightfully surprised. Very fun movie.

I agree. What's the purpose of a connected universe if characters don't show up in each other's movies? They might as well create separate universe for each of them. I got geeked out by the cameo in Ant-Man, and I think it's great how Marvel is utilizing their characters. I don't understand any reason for criticism.

For me, personally, I'm not really complaining about the teamup movies and whatnot (and I loved the cameos and MCU connections in Ant-Man).

I do like variety, though. I don't need every movie to have a huge cast or a huge teamup. I like that Marvel is still putting forth the time and the effort to still make these "smaller" movies that focus on a central character and that character's standalone story. It's the smaller movies that made us fall in love with the characters that would team up in The Avengers.

Most of the complaining is from Wright fanboys, who cite connectivity as an example of studio meddling. If connectivity is the reason for Wright leaving, then good riddance.

Amen. People will always find something to complain about

I loved it. My 11 year daughter's favorite part was The Falcon showing up. It connects Ant-Man to the larger MCU, which is great. This is why I am a fan of a shared universe.

Just got back from seeing Ant-man, loved it. Humour wasn't forced, all the actors nailed , Michael Douglas was Pym,Rudd nailed it , everyone nailed it. Loved the Falcons cameo, Langs connection with his kid, Pym and his kid,Langs crew , Cross was really good too. When Ant-man survived the micro universe kids in my showing were hifiving , thats how connected everyone in my showing was to the movie, lots of laughs and awwwss. I hope it makes alot of money, deserves it, i came out wanting more , didnt feel that after AOU. Its a 9/10 for me

Well said that man.

It's not the fact the cameo exists at all, it's how poorly handled and obvious the fanservice was.

"Hey lets stall this already poorly paced film completely to remind you that this is conected to The Avengers! Please like me!"

The fact that there was nobody at the facility at all other than Sam was just totally stupid. At the end of AoU it was a full house with cadets in training.

The Avengers facility is broken into, an Avenger is atacked, property & tech damaged, something "very important" is stolen and no response team is scrambled to capture the intruder?

Not only that, Sam just brushes it off like "eh, what can a guy do?", which really dumbs down the character.

That's terrible writing.

Was the "super special power source thing" even mentioned again after the next scene?

It was shoehorned in, and very obviously so.

There's plenty other stuff that already did that in a much more subtle fashion.

Regarding the villain...I have heard some say that he's WORSE than Malekith. I don't agree with that. In fact, I thought he was better than Ultron (which isn't saying much, Ultron wasn't very good). I do think he teetered too far to "Evil because I'm evil" territory and wish that his story had been developed a bit beyond some lines about his previous mentorship...but I thought he looked a lot cooler on the big screen than I imagined he would.

I disagree......you didn't like what happened, I did....nuff said.

After all of these years of "Why isn't Iron Man helping Captain America...even though the last time we saw Tony Stark he was having heart surgery...he should have healed up and been ready to know that Cap needed help, then fly across the country in time to do so" we are now getting people complaining about Falcon being exactly where Falcon was seen last time, in order to allow a cross-over.

If you are never, ever going to be happy with what they do, just stop watching.

The thing about the cameo in question is this:

The end-credits stinger strongly suggests that events in Ant-Man are happening simultaneously with Civil War, or at least at the start of it. Which may also explain why the Avengers facility is unmanned except for Falcon. The split may have already happened, or be in the process of happening, at the point where Scott drops in. I'm very interested to how this scene plays out from the other side in Civil War.

I don't think Falcon's appearance in the movie qualifies as a cameo. It's a small supporting role, if anything. He's credited in the post-credit sequence, isn't he? "Cameo" or not, I thought it was great, especially Falcon's line at the end of the scene.
