Antebellum (2020) - IMDb

I recall mentioning on twitter to Ava DuVernay and Jordan Peele that it would be great if Jordan would bring Octavia Butler's book Kindred to the big screen. I wonder if someone heeded my pleas. Regardless, I'm on board for this.

Cool visuals aside, looks run-of-the-mill.

May be interesting

Still pretty cryptic as a teaser should be , but you get an idea of what it is. Very Twilight Zone/Outer Limits.

I’m a little upset about this, but it is what it is.

Janelle Monae’s Horror Film ‘Antebellum’ Sets August Release Date

Lionsgate’s horror film “Antebellum” — starring Janelle Monae — will release in theaters in North America on Aug. 21.

"We are thrilled to join our industry and exhibitor partners as we begin to plan for a return to moviegoing," David Spitz, Lionsgate president of worldwide distribution, said Friday in a statement. Major exhibitors are eyeing a summer reopening for their U.S. locations amid the COVID-19 crisis as new Hollywood product is rolled out.

I still have no idea what the hell this is about.

Now we're getting somewhere.

I don't think I'm going to watch that trailer, because I kind of love the fact that I have no real idea what is happening in this movie.

Janelle Monáe Movie ‘Antebellum’ Skips U.S. Theaters & Heads To PVOD – Deadline

In another case of another movie biting the dust, Lionsgate has decided that the best course of distribution financially for their movie Antebellumis to have the movie premiere on premium on-demand platforms on Sept. 18, as COVID-19 safety protocols currently bar New York, California and other stateside cinemas from reopening. Antebellum will not get a simultaneous theatrical release in the U.S., however, will be released in select offshore markets.

It's pretty much inevitable now.

I feel like this should do pretty well on VOD? I should probably look at numbers but in my mind horror films seem like a good bet for this format temporarily since you can still watch them in the dark to get that creepy feel.

Not surprising. Have avoided all the new trailers so I'm going in pretty blind into this.

So movie's out. They LIED about the premise. There's no horror other than "racism is evil", but it's not even as interesting as what Get Out did with that. And there's no supernatural or time travel elements like the trailer implied. It's all bull****.

Basically, the main character is kidnapped by some corrupt senator who she's been speaking out agains and is held prisoner alongside other kidnapped black people on some private plantation he and his family have been running. Long story short, she kills the bad guys and escapes, and we find out that it's actually an illegal operation running out of an abandoned Civil War reenactment park called Antebellum. The movie ends with the cops arriving to shut the place down.

Saved you $20 guys. This whole movie was a sham to rip-off something far more thought provoking. This and The Turning are neck and neck for me for worst horror movie of the year, but this just barely beats it out despite having a more hopeful ending. Avoid at all costs.

I heard about the bait and switch from the trailers. I really thought they were going for a supernatural element but looks like they pulled a fast one like The Village

And what's worse is that the movie doesn't even ANSWER the immediate questions raised! Like how could they have been pulling this? How long has been going on? etc. NOPE, just movie over, evil loses, we have your money sucka! Even The Village answered that crap after the twist happened!

To whoever directed this: go double-**** yourselves in the ass with a rabid porcupine.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who ended up not being a fan of this one. Honestly, it was kind of hard sitting all the way through this just because I wasn't able to connect with anything in it. The acting was good though, especially from Janelle Monae, but I didn't care all that much for her character and those scenes with her friends annoyed the hell out of me in particular Gabourey Sidibe.

I didn't feel like there were any actual characters or character development in this movie at all despite the fact that Jack Huston, Jena Malone and Eric Lange play pretty despicable characters, but you know nothing else about them other than them just being evil, sadistic people.

It's a shame because I do believe this could have been the next Get Out, but these directors just weren't talented enough or experienced enough to pull it off. This was a huge disappointment IMO.

Finally got around to watching this and enjoyed it well enough. It could've gone a little bit more deeper though.
