Martha Kent has to be the most tragic character in Superman. Am I the only one that feels sorry for her, I mean she could never have children...so guilt toward Jonathan was there I am sure for never giving him a child. Then Jonathan dies and right after Clark left to go train for 12 YEARS!! Did he go visit her after he finished training or go straight to Metropolis? In this movie he was gone another 5 years she has grown old and alone on a farm she cannot manage with out help. Seems like Clark is there for like 1 day but I am sure meant to be like a few weeks or month to catch up on what has happened but anyways. When Superman is in Hospital she is outside..Of course she cannot get in. What is she going to say" I am his mother". Then Superman goes and sees His kid and Lois after he gets out of hospital...I can understand seeing them first but never showed him going to see his mom and saying ..ha, I ain't dead.. and ooooo by the way your a grandmother."

Yeah I felt sorry for her on that scene.

I've always felt bad about the way Martha has been portrayed (or maybe I should say written, because the actresses portaying her are good) in the movies. Superman doesn't treat her well,in my personal opinion, the way they show it in the Reeve/Routh movies (maybe something better will show up on the extended DVDs)....and she is given short shrif.

The relationship between Clark/Superman and Ma Kent is done much better in "Lois and Clark;the Adventurers of Superman" and "Smallville"....at least in those shows you get a real sense of her being a lasting effect in his life.

Totally agree. I never thought much about Martha Kent on film, but yes, she's a suffering lonely woman.

Well said .

this has always been Martha's lot in life though... So many times, she's had to wait and see what happens. It's what makes her the ultimate mother. That she will always be there, even if the man won't let get close.

I'm pretty sure that Clark did visit her b/w his time in the fortress, and his arrival in metropolis, even though they did not show it. This is because the first thing that Clark does in STM upon arriving at the DP, is to make sure that 1/2 his cheque get sent to his bookie, I mean his silver haired mother.

I can't remember who suggested it, but I remember reading it in an interview. Superman taking his mum flying.

I think that would be nice.

I wanted to see the Scene where she met Lois for the first time while Lois was coming out of the hospital. I wonder why that was cut

I'm guessing a lot of Martha scenes were cut so Ben Hubbard was cut as well.

I always felt bad for Martha. I never understood that scene in the first movie when he tells her he has to leave and she says "I knew this day would come." Why can't he still be her son? Superman or not, we all need our mommies at some point.

I agree with you. The relationship Clark has with BOTH parents in L&C, Smallville, and S:TAS is much stronger and more fleshed out. Other than the Glenn Ford speech given to young Clark in S:TM, I really don't like how the Kents have been handled. The films basically build Jor-El up to be more important than the Kents, and I strongly disagree and dislike that.

Poor Martha, it was quite touching seeing her fragile soul and humble existance knowing she has such an amazing secret she has no one she can talk to with about it.

call this a stretch, but did anyone else think that, at the end of the movie when lois and jason are leaving the hospital and martha sees them, Martha thinks that lois' son is clark's as well? I didn't think anything of it, but my gf picked up on some look she gave them as they walked by, and she said "woman's intuition...and a mother always knows."

*shrugs*...i'm gonna look for it when i see it again, but i thought i'd throw that out there. ready...set...speculate!

Never really thought of that, now I feel sorry for her... bouhhou :(

Yeah, I've always gotten the feeling the Kents were written off as hicks in the Superman movies which is a rip, cuz they can be the most interesting characters in the cast.

Jor-El is portrayed as more important than the Kents in the film continuity, and I have major beef with that!!!!

Maybe I blinked but was I the only one who missed Ben Hubbard in the movie?
I saw her at the hospital but didnt notice if Ben was there with her....

He probably was but the shot on her was pretty tight so you'd probably on see him behind her.

Maybe this should be in the "Official" complaints thread, but having to post numerous topics in one thread kind of defeats the purpose of a message board, doesn't it? In any case, on to my post. I really liked the movie. One complaint I have though is that Clark never revisits his mother throughout the entire movie. This is significant because the whole point of the movie is his sense of alienation and lonliness, meanwhile his mother is the one person he still has that he can talk to. Not only could it have worked, I don't understand why he didn't go and tell her what's going on with Lois, confide in her, etc. I understand that there are some cut scenes with his mother, perhaps they address this issue?

To be honest, Pa Kent gets the worst of Donner's/Singer's/pre-crisis comic book writers' vision.

At least Ma is breathing, even if getting tread upon.

well if you read the tie in comic you'd see that she was the last person superman was with before he left to find krypton.

And that makes it ok that her character get's sh^t on in favor of Jor-El and other the possibility of other Kryptonians......

What happened to your exile on June 30th Venom? Why are you still here...
