Superman Returns Connecting Superman Returns with the previous movies (merged)

There should have atleast been one Zod reference

Connecting Superman II and Superman Returns

Lex Luthor knowing The location of The Fortress Of Solitude in the Artic .

Lois remembers seeing The Kryptonian Crystal - says so in the novel

Ok, my opinion, after watching this SR like 10 times.

I think all the previous movies fit into the continuity (that ALL).

STM and SII were the films that this film was supposedly supposed to be a sequal to. However, after watching SR a couple times, most of SIII and SIV seem to line up with SR aswell.

SIII could have happened over the space of a week. And in theory, could have occured only a couple of days after Luthor tried to Nuke California and the invasion of Zod. I always looked at SIII as 'a week in the life of superman'. A short vacation to Smallville, after having a megabattle with Zod and co. A well deserved vacation.

SIV, much like SIII could potentially have taken place only a few months after SII. The nuclear theme of test launches in both STM, SII (the eiffle tower) and SIV line up nicely and could be looked at as the same run of missile tests. It could have been Superman's arrest of Luthor, and his failure to stop the missile crisis, which cause's him to think about krypton and leave, neglecting to remain in order to testify against Luthor.

There is only 2 facts from the Reeve movies that dispute this theory.

1) in SIV, injured superman uses the last of krypton's energy to heal himself to rejoin the battle against nuclear man.

3) Ma Kent had died by the beginning of SIV and Clark was trying to sell the farm.

Anyhow, I think all of the previous movies pretty much line up with SR, without causing to much continuity problems. Comments, opinions?

PS. Smallville also fits into the continuity so far aswell. Nothing in Smallville has defined it yet as a seperate universe (so far atleast). Smallville is just a more detailed look at Superman's youth, and the '12 years' he spent training at the fortress (who says Clark stayed there the whole time listening to Jor'el lecture the encyclopedia galactica?).

Other than the 2 examples listed above, I can't seem to think of any other instances that would dispell continuity between these various properties. As Singer said very long ago, he's trying not to step on any toes with SR. I also think that Smallville is behaving in the same manner. They are trying not to step on any toes either. I think it all works out pretty well.

From your post, it seems to me that, SR could be termed as Superman 2.5...

More like S5 (minus 2 scenes from SIV)

Better cut Superman IV entirely. Nuclear Man isn't going to do wonders for the Superman franchise. :)

see, it really doesn't matter all that much. There are parts of SIV that I love, well 2 actually (I love the UN scene, and the flying with Lois scene). Yes, the rest of the movie was sub par, no argument from me there.

I'd just prefer to stay away from the 'lets just forget that movie and not this one' kind of argument. The movie exists, why not make it fit?

And they almost all do. They could easily recut those 2 scenes in SIV and have it all line up (regardless of the crappiness of sIV)

Okay, anyone saw any? I think SUPERMAN RETURNS is a nice sequel to Superman II. Let's add up some connections. Although, it might be seen as not a sequel too, if you choose.

I'll mention some of the obvious, like Lex entering the Fortress of Solitude and Kitty's comment. And, notably, Jason. We can assume that he is the result of Superman and Lois making love in the Fortress of Solitude.

Any others?

One thing that should have carried over from S2 to SR...it was the green crystal that created the fortress. Superman says this to Lois in S2. "Well, actually it built this place." But we never see the green crystal in SR. We just see clear crystals. In S2, the clear crystals were just data repositories, kind of like the crystal pedestal was Supe's "computer" and the crystals were external data drives which contained all the information (in S2, Lex learns about the three villains by inserting one of the crystals into a "drive." But in SR, the crystals are suddenly able to create land masses. Continuity problem.

I dunno, the green crystal would have confused normal people with Kryptonite.

i agree with qstorm. bad continuity.

I don't think it is. The crystals have data....but it was never confirmed/denied that they COULDN'T build land masses, to perhaps, create ANOTHER Krypton.

I have this strong feeling that the Donner Version of Superman II (which is currently being cut) is being tailored to better suit the continuity of Superman Returns.

So technically, at least in my eyes, we have yet to see how Superman II and Superman Returns connect.

Ex. One rumor I heard was that in the Donner version of Superman II, Lois & Supes "do it" BEFORE he decides to give up his powers...to me that makes much more sense, in regards to Jason.

December can't get here fast enough! :)

hmm... i can't think of anymore.

The SR Prequel (which are written by Singer himself) specifically make SR almost a direct sequel to Superman I, Superman II barely if at all exists.

If you think about it, that makes much sense. The movie has little to no Reference to Superman II.

Lois obviously did not have a mind wipe. She knew she had sex with Supes yet she did not know Supes secret. She did not seem surprised at all about the kid.

SUPERMAN RETURNS shares a Connection with Superman II

(1) Lex Luthor Knowing that The Fortress of Solitude is located in the Arctic .

(2) Jason is 5/6 years old

(3) In The novel When Lex shows Lois The Kryptonian crystal that built Sups FOS in The Arctic . She remembers seeing it before .

I agree.....

Watching the film, Lois doesn't know obviously.

So IF this is a sequel to SII.....then she should be pissed at Supes.

IF this isn't a sequel (or even a loose sequel) to SII, then he had sex with her, left earth for five years and left her with a kid....Lois should still be pissed.

She should HATE Supes after that and NEVER stray from Richard since he's great for her and has taken care of the kid and her.

But Hollywood doesn't work like that.
uh... Lois does hate Supes.
if you've seen Superman Returns, you'd see how pissed off she is at him. for leaving for 5 years after all they've been thru together.
and yes, she knows it's Superman's son. but she didn't tell him right away.
infact, at the end when he's on his deathbed she says "i wanted to tell you..". which means she was planning on telling him eventually, or never telling him at all. but she thought telling him at that time might be able to snap him out of his coma. but it didn't, quite yet.
anyway, as much as Lois has tried to move on by trying to suppress her true feelings of love still for Superman, she couldn't suppress them any longer, and eventually gave in and re-emerged her love for him again.

it's a beautiful love story. you guys just seem to be overlooking it.

Well, him knowing WHERE it is isn't that big a thing. The thing that makes us all wonder, is Kitty's comment "Lex, you act like you've been here before." It could be left up to us to determine.

(2) Jason is 5/6 years old

Well, it makes sense that he's Superman's son.

(3) In The novel When Lex shows Lois The Kryptonian crystal that built Sups FOS in The Arctic . She remembers seeing it before .

Could be a liberty taken by the novel, I heard Brainiac was at the very end, transforming from the New Krytpon land he tossed into the air.
