So, are you saying you feel that online you are just a little less held back by the standards of behavior you think are acceptable in real life, but in the end it's not too big a deviation? Basically, this is a safe harbor to let your freak flag fly about certain pet peeves, ect. but in real life those aren't things you would make a stink about too loudly, am I hearing you correctly?

I'm as crazy in the real world as i am on the internet. I swear, even when people made a video for my wife and i at our wedding, most of them were saying that i'm crazy. Some of you have seen the video of my wedding where i'm dressed as batman and fight some friends of mine dressed as joker and penguin. I think it pretty much answer that question.

I try to treat everyone here the same as I would in real life - by being polite and respectful.

since I am kind of shy and reserved in real life, perhaps I am a bit more outgoing and expressive here on the Hype.

My personality on these boards (and just the internet in general) is pretty much how I am in real-life: my likes/dislkes, preferences, attitude etc. But a lot of my opinions/interests are a little bit suppressed from family, friends, school etc in the real world (like hating TASM2 suit). The Internet kinda allows me to fully express myself.

But yeah, I'm more or less the same guy in real-life.

Yes, i feel the same,your personality will show with opinions and references, i mean the internet allows you to express more of who you are because there is anonimity on your identity so you can be yourself without the social anxiety or social conventions of meeting someone directly,that´s why i think sometimes the internet is a scary place, there are no regulations.

People could be more of themselves online than who they are with family and friends...

I'd like to add also that even if trying to project oneself accurately online, the medium is limited, impressions can vary, and even engaging someone in a personal conversation over time (even by telephone) it can still be hard to gauge a person's social standing or personality even if you know their values and interests and enjoy talking to them.

I think I'm a conundrum. At work I'm pretty quiet don't say much but my views or attitude doesn't change. I'm not fake. It's just that I think I can easily come across different if projecting myself through a more limited medium (more open or expressive; wordy) than in a normal conversation. With that being said, I keep it real.

It's true that I believe that these conversation done through the written word in these types of forums don't contain the full spectrum of cues and are somewhat limited in terms of context. That accounts for a lot of the arguments we have online I suspect.

I wouldn't think views or opinions would change too much when it comes to expressing them, but I am guessing that manner we express them in a real conversation or a statement in a face to face with another person or people is affected by the anonymity of the net. Take the statement: I think we should legalize drugs. Say it out loud in varying ways and there is nuance added which the simple text can't convey.

Is the anonymous nature of the online world really revealing the true selves of people? I guess it is subjective to a big degree. In real life you need the social lubricant of "manners" or at least the self awareness of how you do come across to others. This might lead to self censorship, but it takes place in the context of being a part of a society in the 3 dimensional world. I view that as my real self, which again, does have some things hidden, but I wouldn't say my hidden self is the one true me either since it exists on my own personal mental plane. I think we are a jumble of inner and outer.


This brings me to the issue of Previously Banned Users here on the hype.

Do we think that those people, banned for reasons usually having to do with just letting it all hang out with no internal editor, are being more "real" or, as I suspect, lots of them are making a show online for the consumption of other posters, since as was pointed out, most would get a black eye acting that way in the real world?
