Just got back from the special screening and the film was pretty awesome. It felt like a western set in modern time. The acting was solid. Arnie seems much natural here and his character was totally badass. All the action scenes are great. The first time we see Arnold got into action was just damn cool. But the final shootout in the town is definitely the best.

Here is a very positive review.
With The Last Stand, Arnold's back and better than ever.

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns with guns blazing this time around. The Last Stand is everything that action fans have been hoping for since our hero took office as the "Governator" of California. The big screen has been a lot less explosive since then, and action movies have become something of a lost art—minus The Expendables flicks of course.

The '80s and '90s were rife with bullet-riddled classics from Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis. In the summer, it was like every weekend unleashed another banger replete with as many gun shots as one-liners. The 21st century hasn't had that same luxury, and it's time for the heroes to return.

Schwarzenegger shows a new generation how it's done as Sheriff Ray Owens. After leaving narcotics detail in Los Angeles, Owens took over as Sheriff of the sleepy Sommerton. It's quiet until a dangerous cartel boss with a penchant for racing sports cars named Gabriel Cortez, a menacing Eduardo Noriega, decides he's going to speed through town and across the border into Mexico. Cortez has a bevy of gun-wielding trained killers at his disposal and they descend upon Sommerton after an inventive snatch-and-grab scene in Las Vegas. Even though Forest Whitaker's Agent John Bannister is trailing Cortez from afar, there's only one man on the frontlines. Luckily, it's the Sheriff.

The ensuing action stands on par with the likes of Commando and Predator in terms of incendiary bliss. The gunfights pop off with a one-two punch of '80s bombast and modern sheen. However, The Last Stand's sense of humor burns equally brightly. When inspecting a body, Schwarzenegger puts on reading glasses, drawing laughs from the theater. There are also some lines that belong high up in the Schwarzenegger lexicon. While blasting meat with a giant .44 magnum, he asks gun museum owner Lewis Dinkum—Johnny Knoxville—and his deputy Mike Figuerola [Luis Guzmán], "Can someone tell me what two-thirds of my force is doing out here firing rockets at a slab of beef?" Just before the titular battle, Figuerola picks up a mace, and Schwarzenegger, in timeless delivery, adds, "What do you think we're fighting in a Crusade?" Then, there's the obligatory "Welcome to Sommerton" after offing one villain and, of course, "I'm the sheriff".

Guzmán and Knoxville enhance the laughs and ignite the perfect comic chemistry with Schwarzenegger. As always though, the action is equally a star. Director Jee-woon Kim has done a fantastic job of pacing the movie as a nonstop, tough, and thrilling rollercoaster ride. It's been a while, but The Last Stand is the action event of the decade, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's best move since True Lies.

We need an action movie likes this right now. Thankfully, Arnold's back.

SON OF A B%&@# HENRY. Great way to get me excited. I'm stoked for this beyond belief. I have a feeling this film's gonna kick the asses of Sly's Bullet to the Head and Bruce's Die Hard 5.

Yeah I expected a decent film but it turned out to be much better than I thought. Arnold sure knows how to make a strong comeback.

Well Arnold + Good director = great movie. BTW Henry, do you think his character can support sequels?

Definitely up there with classics like Total Recall or True Lies imo.

Can't wait!

It's nice to read these positive reviews. I just may have to check out The Last Stand. I'm an Arnold fan (T2 is one of my top movies).

I am not sure. On paper, his character is actually quite generic. It is Arnold that make the character fun to watch on screen.

The trailers just seemed very bland and uninteresting to me. But then I keep realizing its directed by Kim Ji-woon.

Okay, this has been bugging me about Ahnuld for a while. He's lived in the US for more than 40 years and more than two thirds of his life. Yet his Austrian accent is as thick as if he just got off the boat last week. Do you guys think it's a bit of a put-on these days (maybe he has a small accent that he exaggerates) for the sake of his on-screen persona? Or did this guy become Mr Universe, a top-grossing movie-star and a US governor without ever taking a class in English pronunciation? Nothing I really care about. Watching the trailer just reminded me of this.

The leading theory is that he has a dialect coach to keep his accent.

Yes essentially. His breakout acting role was the terminator where his accent and stilted delivery pretty much made the role.

Honestly he's far from a great actor and it's really his charisma that sells him so i guess he's never felt the need to change his accent. Although i did mention in this same thread here how it's odd how christoph waltz has a less thick accent?

I doubt he actually "trains" to keep his accent though.

Lol yeah, you don't have to "train" to keep your native accent. You might lose it naturally but you'd still be able to do the accent on a dime if you wanted.

He might just milk it a bit sometimes, but I seriously doubt it.

I love hearing the positive reviews. I'm getting excited about this film again.

Well Waltz is a bit beyond the average so and so when it comes to languages. Doesn't he speak at least 4 fluently(German, English, French and Italian)? Isn't that talent what ultimately got him the job in Inglorious Basterds?

NOTE TO ALL SWEDISH HYPERS: (and everyone else, who wants to help :) )
This movie will not come to Sweden because of a decision from Nordisk Film that says the competition is too great with movies like Sune in Greece (a swedish kids comedy) and Johan Falk (a swedish cop-thriller series).

Support the campaign to change this decision: https://www.facebook.com/ViSomSomVillSeTheLastStandPaBio

People - these sort of campaigns do actually work. Iron Sky wasnt originally going to come to Sweden either, but the facebook campaing became big enough to change that decision.

It's cancelled in Sweden altogether? That's ********.
