Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning For The Legend of Conan

You're telling me there no difference between those and the character in a cable series?

And yes, I used to watch Conan the Adventurer as a kid.

I think Netflix would be more realistic than HBO. Netflix loves licensing brands like this and giving things another chance. Someone would then have to develop and pitch as a TV show though. Doesn't seem like Chris Morgan is doing that.

I'm not certain Netflix wants to take on brands that are too well known. In the long run it's cheaper for them to make an original property like Stranger Things and keep it in perpetuity, than it is to pay and constantly renew the rights for any live action Conan property.

There are enough Robert E Howard stories that they could almost adapt them all into something like Game of Thrones or Black Sails on a major cable network. If they take the Dark Horse approach they could even craft some interesting story arcs by expanding upon the novellas. Queen of the Black Coast and Beyond the Black River are especially right up there with the best of anything in Game of Thrones in terms of action and emotion.

I see a Conan tv series being like Vikings and Black Sails with fantasy elements very carefully thrown in.

Totally.

Original property like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Daredevil, etc?

Either Netflix or HBO would be great in my opinion. Both aren't afraid to push the boundaries with their programming. That would be very important in developing a Conan series. You can't have TV execs saying "Boobs & blood? In a Conan series? We can't have THAT!"

Crom! Yes!

...also Voltron: Legendary Defender and the upcoming Castlevania animated series.

Haven't heard about the Castlevania animated series. But then again I don't follow every single new show Netflix has in development.

Point is they have licensed several Marvel properties as serials which are a part of the MCU. As Conan was once a Marvel property as well, it would make sense for them to adapt the Black & White comics into a TV series.

There have been two Conan TV shows before.

The animated one did quite well, lasting two or three seasons (that's pretty good for a cartoon).

The other one was pretty bad. It was trying to combine the campiness of Hercules and Xena with the grittiness of the 1982 movie, and failed on all counts. That's why it only lasted one season.

Conan isn't that well known. They picked up Voltron and Fuller House. Those are not original properties they own.

And of course Marvel Netflix, which is produced by Marvel and ABC TV.

It'll be an R-rated animated series supposedly based on the game Castlevania: Dracula's Curse. Series is written by Warren Ellis and produced by Adi Shankar(Dredd).

Indeed. Plenty of material for a tv show to work with.

Since someone already mentioned Black Sails, Starz would also be a good fit. Think Spartacus but with Conan.

Also while I like the original Robert E Howard stories, audiences might find the material a bit too old fashioned in our current #woke age.

I would love nothing more to be wrong, but that's part of the Disney partnership. They've made it clear they want to decrease content licensing. But on the other hand they're also doing stuff like adapting the Altered Carbon books, so it's possible, but Starz or HBO would be more likely.

There are trappings that can effectively be done without when adapting. Overall, the stories are pretty celluloid-friendly. Films like Apocalypto, Predators, From Dusk Till Dawn, Escape From New York, Sin City, Riddick films, Mad Max: Fury Road and Rambo(2008) have a certain Howard-like vibe.

And Conan was once a Marvel property. Which means that adapting the Black & White Conan comics rather than the original REH novellas would put it under the Disney/Marvel umbrella.

I doubt it's that simple, but still, I fully expect Conan as a big budget cable show.

What are the copyright implications exactly though? Would that really be something that could be done? If that were an out available there would be more companies taking advantage of such a loophole I think. Anyone with a good understanding of the legal issues want to jump in? Sounds fishy to me. I mean... DC comics used to publish Star Trek comics. I don't think WB which owns DC could get away with producing Star Trek films or TV shows based on the comics they produced for decades. I don't think Marvel can do the same with Conan, a book they published through a licensing agreement.

That said, while they would need to give it a bigger budget than any of their Netflix adaptations, maybe a partnership with Marvel is not a bad idea to bring Conan to streaming?

I believe Dark Horse owns those black & white stories now.

I imagine Marvel is far more tight assed than Netflix on their own, who happily spent $90 million on the first season of Sense8.

True enough. But perhaps they would look on this as a way to getting into something akin to GoT? I think that no matter how it's done Conan will need a more than solid budget to bring to life and be satisfying these days. You are right though, with Perlmutter still top dog in the TV branch chances are low that they would spend the money Conan would require. You're already likely looking at big sets, a good amount of CGI, costuming, lots of extras for big battles, practical effects like make up... Essentially all the same issues that Game Of Thrones has which requires a similar allocation of resources.

Starz would probably be a great place for this. They don't give their shows especially long lifespans, usually 4 seasons at most, but judging by the likes of Spartacus and Black Sails they're willing to put out larger budgeted shows that don't compromise on content.
