Comedy Arrested Development - Part 1

I have a feeling S5 will be the last season! I could be wrong, though!

If S5 was getting good buzz even before the whole thing with the cast, I'd disagree. But with the movie getting a very tepid response on top of the male cast member's behavior. It's not looking good.

I wonder why Netflix didn’t shelve S5 when the accusations against Tambor came out?

They had already filmed a good chunk of the season, hadn't they?

With the support from Hurwitz (and probably the male cast), they thought it would be fine to proceed. Honestly, good for Walter acknowledging that not everything can be smoothed over so easily.

They had I think. But they had also filmed a lot of HoC and the biopic Vidal and they cancelled or reshot both after the Spacey thing. Spaceys accusations were much worse but still

So...anybody watched this yet? Gonna try to catch a few eps tonight but there seems to be zero buzz for this season even though I hear its a return to form.

I've heard it starts off slow, and judging by the first episode I'd have to agree. There's a lot of recapping (even by Arrested Development standards). Im hoping it does pick up because the first episode didn't get many laughs out of me.

I was going to get around to it this weekend. I guess I wasn't the only one not jumping at the chance to binge it.

I had no idea it was released. Why did they debut it on a Tuesday?

Im on ep 2 now, its...better than season 4 so far but its slow. You can feel theres a lack of comedic energy and its not nearly as snappy and witty as it used to be. And theres so much recap, I feel like it makes me feel more lost than helps. I kinda wish they'd just forget season 4 and start with a fresh new story.

But, lets see where this goes.

I am amused by season 5 and I enjoy these characters enough that I found it entertaining. But I think the big problem is, the switch to Netflix has caused the writers to serialize Arrested Development. It needs to be more episodic. During its time on Fox, there were certainly some overarching plots (Marta, Mr. F, George Sr.’s crimes, etc) but each episode was a satisfying self-contained story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. On Netflix, the format I s just a really long movie. There’s very little structure or plotting for the individual episodes. And I think that hurts the quality of the show.

I'm on either episode 5 or 6. It does start picking up once the whole family gets back together. Unfortunately that only leaves a couple of episodes left. This season relies a bit too heavily on Ron Howard's narration for my liking, and the energy of the show doesn't really feel the same despite all of the call-backs to earlier seasons. If I had to rank them:

Season 2 (great)
Season 1 (great)
Season 3 (good)
Season 5 (okay)
Season 4 (ehhh...)

Is there a season 5 part 2 coming? Don't tell me they only filmed 8 episodes...

Yeah this is just part 1. I don't think they've announced a date for part 2 yet, but it's supposed to be later this year.

S5 (part 1) felt more like the old AD in terms of style (and narration), but for me, S4 was funnier.

Yeah S5 Part 1 did nothing for me. Only got through 3 episodes. Having a hard time wanting to push ahead

I didn't realize Portia retired from acting. Was wondering why Lindsay wasn't in the season that much.

I think the season was okay. Maeby as a 75 year old was probably my favorite storyline and loved the bit where she became her father.

The show went downhill when Kyle Mooney showed up.

The show just feels...off though doesnt it? I rewatched season 3 to prep for this and man the chemistry and comedic timing between the actors was just all perfectly in sync then. Here though, maybe its the writing but the repartee between the cast feels flaccid even though you can clearly tell they're making an effort to recapture it.

I dunno, anyone else feel that way?
