As a male, do you sometimes just crave a movie that's all style, no substance?

I admit that a lot of times I do need a movie, like a Bad Boys 2 to balance out with something like a Cuaron's Children of Men. I feel some film buffs have become so "namby-pamby" that they dismiss a movie that has a lot of action as opposed to one that has more drama. Granted, I do enjoy some depth and drama on occasion, but that Y chromosome urges me to go see something that critics have bashed, but is so over the top with action and machismo I can't help but be enthralled. The guys know what I'm talkin' about. Or do they?:meow:

Terry, you should get out there more.
There's a whole, huge cult of intellectuals who gush all over action movies.

They critique them and make it sound like it's "okay".

no....cant say that i do. im all for a movie with lots of style and action and all that fun, but if theres no redeeming substance to back all that up, then i could essentially care less about the movie.

Exactly, look at Snakes on a Plane. Style, action, tons of fun...but also great characters, funny, plenty of substance.

A "fun movie" isn't an excuse for a bad movie.

i love Bad Boys 2 never actually seen the first and i also love Oceans 12 ive always been a sucker for sequels even since i was a kid i mean yeah i love movies that have lots of drama and whatnot but im a sucker for good action and eye candy

I have to say..just because i'm a male doesn't mean that i have to warch action films to way out and story driven film..

i watch film full stop.

Can't remember who said it, but after Kill Bill, Tarantino proves that style CAN be substance.

Sometimes I like watching "all flash, no substance." However, I have no idea when I'm going to react positively to a movie like that. I loved Kill Bill, but hated Ultraviolet. I love Tony Jaa movies like Ong Bak and The Protector (hell, I could watch either of those movies on mute if I could still keep the bone-crunching sound effects), but District B13 felt like a complete waste of my time.

I'm not quite sure where it lies, but there seems to be a fine line these mindless action films need to be warry of. It's this same line that caused most of my friends to love the first Transporter movie, but somehow be disappointed by the second.

Me and my friends would fast forward through the talking in Ong Bak and just go to the action. I still don't really know what the movies about.

A sacred statue from his village was stolen. He ventured into the harsh inner-city for the first time so he could retrieve it. Along the way, he uncovers a criminal conspiracy that doesn't make much sense.

It's the same plot for The Protector, only replace "statue" with "live elephant" and "harsh inner-city" with "streets of Sydney, Australia."

Hey i miss those days of Van Damme and Stallone man :csad:
I do like movies with substance ( V for Vendetta ) but at the same time there's just that male urge to watch someone getting hit in the head with a metal pole. :woot:

I like those male action movies such as Demolition Man.
Cringe worthy acting from Sandra Bullock : YEs
Crappy story : Yes
Action where everything is over the top , things are destroyed just for the sake of destruction , mindless violence : OH HELL YES

I mean c'mon. Movies like transporter 1/2 , Snakes On A Plane ( it's more of s spoof on all the typical genre's IMO) , those Tony Jaa movies .......

We just love destruction :woot:

everyone once in a while, you need something mindless to watch

Sometimes they are a guilty pleasure, but only if they are overall good films.

Kung Fu Hustle and Hellboy are films that spring into mind (last two films I watched this morning :o)

The matrix?

the first movie anyway..gave you alot to think about, doesn't exactly have no substance..

oh i see your kidding..i knew that. :o

Well....it does have substance but we all know most people after first viewing skip the talkie parts and just watch the fight scenes.

Same with the spiderman films. :o

You might be right..

I mean if your talking fights the second movie hands down...

although the ultimate guilty pleasure are the Transporter films.. no substance at all..but very watchable..

I'm hoping for a 3rd.

I still saw Revolutions twice in the cinemas. I hate it when your friend has a birthday invites you along to see a movie you hate but you can't refuse. :o
