Frak... You mean the one that extends the probe-y thing onto the Bacta tank to wake Luke up?

Yep. Kinda looks like a king sized fire hydrant with arms or tentacles. They even made an action figure of it.

Well, what ever it's name is, I am sure it disappointed many a child in action figure form on Christmas.

"Alright, Mom!! Star Wars toys...(rips open wrapping) Uh... Yeah... Thanks. Listen, I know you want me to be a doctor and all, but this is worse than when you bought me those M.A.S.H. toys. " *

*Not making that up. That was an actual thing.

Morrison used Mask of Zorro.

Begins had them see the opra DeFlatermouse though.

Arkham City game had The Terror

The actual movie and actor Kane & Finger reference as their influence is the Fairbanks Mark of Zorro.

Yep. I figured I'd get mask or mark as an answer and I'm good with either.

All this Batman/Zorro reminds me, probably nobody is going back to guessing this one, but in-case anyone was still curious.
1-Before Batman, while sitting in a chair contemplating how to reinvent himself, what character's crime fighter career, name and identity was inspired by a bat suddenly flying in through the character's window.

2-Name his Police Commissioner cohort.

3-The same author under a different pseudonym created another dark caped, masked, nocturnal animal inspired hero.
Name them (author and character)
1- The character was: C.K.M Scanlon's The Bat, published in Popular Detective Vol.1 #1-4 1934
#1-The Bat Strikes
#2-Bite of the Bat
#3-Shadow of the Bat
#4-Code of the Bat

2- The Police Commissioner who reluctantly allies himself with the Bat to fight crime is: Jim Burdoon

3- C.K.M Scanlon was a Popular Detective in house pseudonym, used apparently in this case by Jhonston McCulley creator of Zorro.

Some excerpts:
"...For that reason he must become a figure of sinister import...A strange nemesis that would eventually become a legendary terror to all crimedom.
...Just what the character would be that he intended to assume was still vague in his mind. He only knew that it would have to be some nubilous creature of the night that lurked in the shadows.
He glanced a the oil lamp burning on the table. Then he swung around, suddenly tense. In the shadows above his head there came a slithering, flapping sort of sound...
As the creature hovered above the lamp for an instant it cast a huge shadow upon the wall.
"That's it!" exclaimed Clade aloud. "I'll call myself "The Bat"

-

...The whole plan was growing clear as his brain worked busily. Disguised as a human bat, he would take up the trail. Working always by night, and remaining in hiding during the day. He would secure evidence against crooks of all descriptions, and then call in the police.

-

It would be the Bat, strange creature of the night, who would combat all of the forces of crime, who would bring fear into the hearts of the lawless. The police would gradually learn that the Bat was working with them.

-
He reveals himself to Police Commissioner James Bordoon:

"I am the Bat! A creature that stalks through the night, and whose eyes are keenest in black Darkness. Remember - the Bat! By that name you shall know me..."

No one remembers the Star-Hoppers of Aduba-3?:waa: So disappointed.
This is where the creative forces of the bizarre 70s world of Marvel Comics and Star Wars first intersected (now ironically both owned by Disney)

Who were the Star-Hoppers?

Name all 8?

What movie(s) was their story derivative of?

After the official story arc ended, Star Hoppers was not only Marvel Comics first venture into an expanded Star Wars universe, but after Splinter of the Mind's Eye was the first licensed "Expanded Universe" tale ever told.
Following the events of the first movie. while Luke and Leia go off on their adventure, the comics now follow Han & Chewie on their first adventure.

From a story lifted Lucas style straight from Akira Kurosawa' Seven Samurai and subsequently Magnificent Seven (Battle Beyond the Stars came later) - Han & Chewie are recruited to protect a simple and defenseless farming planet, from a galactic menace. They in turn recruit Six more "great" mercenary/warriors.

Pretty neat custom figures of the group:

8againstaworld.jpg

They are:
Hedji (a porcupine looking species of bounty hunter)
Amaiza Foxtrain (a female pirate, a gunslinger, and a smuggler counterpart to Solo.)
Don-Wan Kihotay (a delusional dreamer who carries on vision of the ancient Jedi Knights)
Jimm Doshun aka - "the Starkiller Kid" (a bizarre Luke naive farm-boy type look alike)
FE-9Q (his droid)
Jaxxon (a green rabit looking species that puts Jar Jar to shame, a smuggler and pilot of the star-ship "Rabbit's Foot" ...hence Star-Hoppers.

And animated...

Wait, I'm getting why they were all so quickly forgotten, ...and probably intentionally so.:oldrazz:

Name three of the Skiff Guards - and the movie (and context in the movie) they got their names from?

Mondragon, I have to say these are amazing and amazingly esoteric (and HARD) questions. Bravo. Also... No clue about the skiff guards. We are talking about ROTJ here right?

I read the Tales of Jabbas palace book years ago and I remember the one stupid guard the story was about but none of the others.

I read Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina & Tales From the Bounty Hunters, both books offering interesting stories.

OK. Who were the 2 cantina patrons that picked a fight with Luke Skywalker? One of them uttering the infamous line "We're wanted men, I have the death sentence in twelve systems".

Duke, Dr. Evizan AKA, DOCTOR DEATH and Ponda Bobba?

PS I adored the two TALES OF... anthologies you and Kev posted. Great stuff.

What's the name of the girl that gets kidnapped in Double Dragon?

So Havoc, it's been a month. How did the party go? Did you use any of these?

klaatu - Barada - Nikto.

It's the fail-safe secret phrase given by the alien Klaatu to the heroine - should he be killed or captured.
That she in turn must say to the robot Gort, to keep Gort from destroying the Earth.
In the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still.

In the movie Army of Darkness Ash messes up the phrase saying something like - Klaatu... verata... nnnnecktie.... nnnoodle?

Oh yeah, I had Tales From the Bounty Hunters.

Did Tales From The Mos Eisley Cantina ever explain why Ponda Baba's hand was like a flipper or hoof seen up at the bar when still attached, but is then a furry claw hand after Obi-Wan cuts it off and it hits the ground?

And does the "Dr." Evizan reattach it?:funny:
