Comics Asm #564

What did you think of the three different points of view? I liked Peter's the best.

It was an ok issue... reminded me of the old days with the odd single story issue instead of the constant part x of 6 arcs that we get these days...

It was cool to see Overdrive with some type of powers... makes him appear more threatening than simply being a Spidey-fan NASCAR driver...

I wasn't all too crazy about Vin's POV (I'm not sure if I like Vin all that much), Spidey's was good, but I kinda dug Overdrive's...

Decent comic... very middle of the road, but a nice change o'pace...

:yay:

Mr. Thomas I really respect you...
but sometimes some of you guys are too optimistic about "the new direction". as some fans are to harsh against it. I hope you understand what I mean...:csad:

Aloha,
If you read my post regarding how Wall Street looks upon Marvel, you'll see that my optimism is based upon Investment Bankers numbers and not comic book sales numbers. This New Direction as you call it, has been in the works for years by people WAY above Joe Q.You may not like the direction which is of course your right,But I am a Marvel Stock holder and things for the company as a whole are looking FANTASTIC. Marvel as a comic book company continues to dominate the industry.Yours and some others(never the majority) dislike of the current direction does not change any of those BUSINESS realities.I don't want you to leave Spidey but rest assured, your drop out has been factored in and Marvel is going for new blood to replace you and anyone else that doesn't want to come into their version of the 21st century Spider-Man.

"Stuck to the ground to slow it down"

I've seen universal joints (which shouldnt be nearly as resilient as Peter's legs) flip busses and even smaller cars with relative ease. That would have spelled disaster, considering none of the children seemed to be buckled in.

Again; seemed to me like he went with the best course of action.

Aloha,
What we need is a history lesson. Show me where Spidey HAS EVER stopped a moving vehicle with his legs.Too much Spider-Man 2 the movie going on. And that didn't work in the movies EITHER!

Aloha,
Here's something I'd like pro and con Amazing fans to read.

Fool contributor Tim Beyers wonders whether you're a Marvel or a DC. He owned more than 2,000 comic books, as well as shares and LEAP options in Marvel, at the time of publication. The Motley Fool's disclosure policy has the ability to continuously crack jokes while it explains complex financial topics. Bring it on, Spidey.
Oh, Mickey, you're so fine -- but so is Spidey
What this means is that Marvel has a massive licensing business that should continue to thrive, even as Marvel Studios cranks out Iron Man next May, followed by The Incredible Hulk in June.

How massive is it? Ask the editors at LICENSE magazine. According to this article (downloads a PDF file), Marvel is the world's sixth-most valuable licensing brand, accounting for an estimated $4.8 billion in retail sales. Disney (NYSE: DIS), Viacom (NYSE: VIA), and Phillips-Van Heusen are among the handful of brands to account for more.

No one should be surprised, then, that hundreds of companies are leaning on Spidey to earn them more. Crocs (Nasdaq: CROX) is putting Marvel characters on its signature clogs, for example. And the Al Ahli Group is spending $1 billion to welcome Captain America to Dubai.

But, in Q3, it was Spidey who dazzled investors. Licensing revenue from Marvel's Spider-Man joint venture with Sony (NYSE: SNE) nearly touched $100 million through the first nine months of the year, up from $3.5 million during the same period in 2006.

Margins also improved by double digits across the board, thanks in part to another lucrative licensing deal -- this one with Hasbro (NYSE: HAS), which has committed to spending more than $200 million to make toys out of Marvel characters.

Take another look at those numbers
Surely, bears will point out that even with its rich licensing business, Marvel faces a huge hurdle with self-produced films. They're not entirely wrong. The comic-book king has already borrowed more than $200 million to produce Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

If neither film makes money, Marvel could lose the movie rights to both characters and eight others. But I just don't see that happening. I've done the math.

According to this presentation (downloads a big PDF file), a self-produced Marvel film that costs $130 million to make and that earns $150 million at the domestic box office would produce $62 million in operating profit.

If that's true, then perceived busts Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, produced by News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) 20th Century Fox, and The Hulk, produced by Universal, would have earned more than $50 million each for Marvel as self-produced films.

My point? Maybe Marvel's movie business isn't as risky as the Street thinks.

And if it is? So what? Marvel today trades for roughly 16.8 times is adjusted cash from operations, or about in line with historic norms. What that means is investors buying today are getting the new Marvel Studios business for zero. Nada. Zilch.

Marvel is one of the best stocks ever to enter the Stock Advisor portfolio.

As much as I always want to read a good Amazing Spider-Man, it's no longer just comic book sales of Spidey that makes him a winner to Marvel and the stock holders(me). Hulk and Iron Man movies will generate more cash in 2008 than the comics will. Joe Q was given the green light to make the OMD/BND changes from those WAY above him in Marvel. When it comes to Licensing, Marvel has a potential like Disney. What's the last Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck comic book you read? That doesn't mean that Mickey or Donald aren't making big money for Disney.Comic books will always be important to Marvel, but comic books historically have an ebb and a flow regarding sales. Before JMS, Amazing was selling around 23rd among the top 100 comics per month. It's the Brand name that sells for Marvel today. The Marvel comic book is still the dominant comic book within the industry and the name and image of the Amazing Spider-Man is greater today than ever which is why........

I used to post under another name...but its pretty much irrelevant now..the point is,I would rarely stick out and say something...but I always noticed your posts and payed attention to what you had to say. your a great guy, you even scanned spidey comics for fans to read and be able to catch up on the character. You never stepped on anyones toes....until I posted my opinion towards BND a while back. at least I felt that way....:csad:

It was kind of like finally meeting a childhood hero and him insulting you upon meeting him.

If you've seen my posts you know I use reason in my argument against BND.
everythings not bad about it like some fans make it out to be.... and I respect Iloveclones and Man of bats opinions there 2 really awesome guys that love the stuff.

point is I feel as if your looking at some of my posts and thinking im just some moron who can't accept change.

as for your stocks. I hope they continue to flourish....but I just want to be able to enjoy spidey stories without getting a headache when i read back issues.. I feel like you just read one or two posts and think that I'm a fan that randomly hates things just because its different...and thats beyond the truth.

He could've ripped the roof off, pried the doors open crawled down the front and stuck to the ground to slow it down. Not been written by a gaggle of hacks that Marvel ironically calls the Braintrust.
You're an idiot. You're not even critisizing anything that has to do with Brand New Day. It's an action sequence, that the writer felt would be exciting.

You actually think that if this was BEFORE OMD/BND that Peter would have ripped the roof off, and done it your way?????????? It makes no sense. The writer wrote an action sequence he felt would be interesting.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BND!!!!!!!

same goes here. I really liked the artwork and most of all how Override (i think thats his name) would step into a car and PIMP it out

Curious question here, is Lily Hollister still flirting with Peter? Or does she genuinely like him?

Look at the title of:oldrazz: the thread. I'm still discussing this cliched issue that took three writers to squeeze out. By the way who is a Carnage fan to call someone an idiot? Everyone knows you're all products of daddy/daughter incest.

That's great that you are making money, Donald. But not everyone that loves Spidey gives a flip about the movies, tshirts, stock portfolios and theme parks.

Some people just want to read a good story. :o

Congratulations. But you made the comment that it's easy to spot BND fans because of how easily they swallow things. The thing you had a problem with (action scene) has nothing to do with BND whatsoever. In addition, your idea was hackneyed, cliched and ripped off from the movie.

It's YOU who is the simple one to spot because you pick out problems and decry them as more bad thigns caused by BND when in fact, they have nothing to do with BND whatsoever.

By the way who is a Carnage fan to call someone an idiot?
Carnage was my backyard wrestling name, and EHW was the name of the backyard wrestling thing, hence carnageEHW. So it would seem your attempt to make me look like an idiot has backfired.

Everyone knows you're all products of daddy/daughter incest.
Are you talking about carnage fans, or BND fans? Because I'm certianly not a BND fan, in fact, I dislike it immensely. And for carnage fans....well, I'll find out if I'm a product of incest when the DNA results come back next week.

Yes, she is still flirting with Peter and yes I think she genuinely likes him.

But this is just so a re-hash of the whole dating thing Pete went through in college with MJ, Gwen and Harry.

Webbing Overdrives car in mid air like the 60's show intro was pretty cool.

This issue definitely felt like a filler.

2.5 webs/5.

Uh guys. Anyone mind filling this guy in on my stance on BND? Although I think he's just grouchy, because he had to job off his cardboard title belt to a 15 year old girl that his fed promoter wants to bang. (wrestling reference)
