Comics Astonishing X-Men #14 preview

Maniac, I would probably then write it off as convient, irritating writing, which would only make me more glad I bryne-stole the issue.

There are plently of options to make the story seem deeper and connected to past story line.

Whedon can always pull out the "Wanda" card. In the same way the Poffessor can now walk, Cyc may have had his brain fixed...and in the same way Bobby thought he didn't have his powers, Cyc could still just believe he needs to keep his eyes covered.

There's also the soap opera-like "bump your head once to cause the problem, bump your head again to fix it". There are enough times that Cyc has bumped his head.

Brain damage does a BIT more then "bump head''

True...I'm just saying that they can expand beyond just saying... "Hey, Cyclops! Ya know how the doctors told you that you have brain damage?...oops."

I mean he was only in a coma for a year because of it....no biggie.

I just bought this issue today and I love Joss`s work!!!

I dont where Joss is tryin to go with all this stuff - but it, plus the delays, arent making for compelling reading in my opinion. Two months between issues (or was it three?) and I find myself not really caring that Kitty and and Piotr got it together, not knowing what the point is in Emma's Psychic manipulation of Scott, to what end or really being that fussed. I mean, is the plan of the new Hellfire club to bring them down from the inside? Ooh... score! That's never been tried!
Is Emma pulling a "Cain and the new Brotherhood" or is she truly a bad guy, or has she always been a bad guy and from what point? Or is she being fully manipulated? Its gonna take Joss 12 issues to maybe, MAYBE address this - but the pace so far and the jarring back and forth with SWORD makes me figure I'll just ride it out, not be fussed one way or the other and see where Emma ends up team-wise in the other books.

I love Joss. We get this amazing story where Scott is psychologically pulled apart, intercut with Kitty & Peter doing the wild thing. I wonder what he did to her to make her fall through the floor like that.

It's especially funny that they had sex in this issue, since they barely had the chance to kiss in the last issue. Kitty knocks on his door, they kiss one another and give this romantic "oh my god, it must be LOOOVVVVEEEE!!!" smile... then they're bumping uglies 5 minutes later. Apparently, the time for starry-eyed romance has passed.

Well alot could have happened off panel of course. You need to consider that there is at least 5 years Marvel time of on again/off again relations between the two. Or for those of us who have been reading them for the past 20 freaking years. I mean even Logan has felt the sexual tension between the two. He did let Peter get his ass kicked by the Juggernaught for breaking Kitty's heart the first time.

EDIT: Kitty still has to concentrate some to keep solid. I would be willing to bet, she hit the big O and lost concentration. IMO

she needed to break him down for his own good

I sorta agree with this...what happend was better for Scott in the long run..perhaps.

But hey maybe she just wanted to take out the leader first

Cant wait to see what happens next.

All I have to say is Mr. Weadon gives a whole new meaning to the ground moved.

Excellent issue, I'm actually liking waiting 2 months for each issue now it keep you on your toes.

I agree.....that part cracked me up.

So Kitty and Piotr had sex. According to Whedon's Bible, one must now turn evil and the other must die. It's like a commandment.

[q=Aptman]... "Hey, Cyclops! Ya know how the doctors told you that you have brain damage?...oops."[/quote]
But in a way this twist is kindof
refreshing/humanizing hopefully an opportunity for some character development /growth that's been long overdue...

1. R we finally going to figure out what makes Scott Summers so special?!!!

Gotta hand it to whedon he has done more to overhall Scott's character than any one evr. Soo many possibilities now...Looking foward to-

1b. New powers! Will they be solar?-light/heat can it be projectile like Gambit? Can he absorb it directly through his hands mayb....
Cyclops with claws?

It will be interesting for him to be weaker (in tha he has to relearn his powers) -& stronger (new power /freedom to actually see the woman he's screwing over.

2. Is/will he still b called Cyclops?

3.Will new power levels be revealed if he has any different powers.?

4. How come Jean only acts ****ty with Loan? that's messed up.. who needs Emma if he can get Jean to get her freak on?!

Peter does not look hot altho the scene is too cute-It's exactly the way i always thought they'd get it on...

Scott should look hot without the visor not like a nutcase and even Emma as Jean should not look so fug in closeup frames.~!
We've waited years for dialogue like this I want some art I might actually want to look at again...:o

aS FOR THE FLASHBACKS i LUV!! WHEDON FOR THIS BECAUSE HE DOES IT WITH A TWIST THAT BRINGS INSIGHT AND NOSTALGIA.

I'd love if he'd recreate some of those first love/angst scenes from the very first issues of the original 5 xmen to tie in what was going on in Scotts mind in those days taking on such responsibilities & stress of his first love.

Whedon's so brilliant at creating & refreshing the inner life of these characters and still maintaining continuity! from like 30 years ago!!!
Some writers can't even keep continuity from ayear ago. Whedon=Xcellent!
He should write all the Xbooks!:)

After thinking about it, I'm still not convinced the Hellfire Club exists outside of Emma's mind.

"But Beast saw Cassandra Nova!"
Did he? Or was that Emma in disguise? Beast was working in his lab, his back to the door, and he immediately thought Emma walked in. Why? Because he smelled her. Emma was all ready with the psychic glamour of looking (and likely sounding) like Cassandra Nova, but how many of us non-feral/non-blind folks think about identifying others by smell? That was Emma, and Beast smelled it when she walked through the door. However, he'll still trust his eyes more than his nose in the next issue.

I did think that about Beast's senses - though is it possible for psychics to interfere with senses like smell? I would assume so, but I kinda have the feeling that Logan has always been able to tell who someone was even with a Psychic making them look like someone else to confuse the other team members.

I can see why Emma broke Scott - its smart to force him to realise his potential to make him the leader he has always been expected to be. Maybe her way of preparing him for the coming "Nova" of the hellfire club (whether real or in her head). I found myself thinking when she was asking him why Xavier chose him to lead given the other options "well duh - Summers has always been shown to be a superb tactician and weigh decisions based on the situation, not his emotions like Rogue would, or Jean, or even Storm to a degree".

And the panel about the only time he had to fight for his title he lost to Storm - Emma just used that scene to push him further, even though if he had taken a moment to think about it he would have realised his loss wasnt anything to do with his leadership skills.

Maybe I missed a page, but I dont know what the final page was about - whats with lying vege like on the bed? Is his brain mush? Or has he learned to control his powers? Or does he have no powers? I assumed she turned him into a vegetable, but that goes with "Emma Villain break down the leader to take him out of the way".

Good point...I have to agree with you!!!

I just read this issue and I still say Astonshing is the best X-men book right now. I don't care for the bi-monthly shipping schedule, but if the book stays this good, I'll keep happily reading it. Compared to the lack luster writing of Abjectiveless and Uncanny, this book is pretty exciting. And yeah, I loved that whole scene with Scott seeing himself as Logan, that was really well done. I also really liked the brief scene in the kitchen when Kitty and Pete walk by Logan and he sniffs at them and says, "About time." That's the Wolvy we all know and love. :D

Just read the issue, and frankly I'm kinda thinking "so what?" I don't know why, but it really wasn't much for me. I'm glad that Kitty and Peter are officially together now, but we don't need the sex stuff. Kids read these comics. The whole Cyclops and Emma thing kinda annoyed me, as I'm tired of watching Emma always in charge and Cyclops as the lacky. I've watched it for how many years now? I didn't like it back then and I don't like it now. The only way this whole power Emma trip thing will turn out good is if it turns out making Cyclops a stronger character (since he should be stronger already with all the crap he's been through in the comics).

Eh, didn't hate the comic, it just didn't tickle my fancy. Funny enough, my favorate part of the comic was simply seeing Beast. That's sad.

Bottom line .... great comic, high quality.

But two months for something that takes 4 minutes to read and moves the plot forward an inch is not great.

If Bendis were writing this we would hate it. True.

Great book, worth the wait. Love the Kitty Orgasm. Love Wolverine looking at them both and saying 'Bout time. Love it all.

Well, one thing Whedon does have on Bendis is the ability to make talk interesting. His dialogue is the best in the biz, and that means a lot in a story like this.

I do agree that the slow reveal on the plot, the lack of action, and the apparent Cyclops retcon would probably get Bendis eviscerated. But what I think we're seeing is a writer cashing in on his success-- Whedon's earned the benefit of the doubt. Bendis seems to have used up his credit in that area (with many fans-- me, I mostly like the guy)...

I find this sort of thinking very, very bizarre. We've got guns and explosions and decapitations and eyes getting ripped out and missing limbs and throats getting slit and people getting flayed and etc etc etc in every corner of both Marvel and DC...but when it comes showing to a loving young couple, all if a sudden it's too graphic for the kiddies?

I mean, come on, that's just backwards.

If our young, impressionable youth can handle Wing's mangled corpse getting up and killing people in the last arc, then they can handle some PG-13 humor.
