Comics Astonishing X-Men #14 preview

Emma's behavior isn't very excusable. Ripping someone's mind apart "for their own benefit" against their will, just isn't right. It wasn't right when Jean did it to Emma and its not right now. But Emma's been on a huge power trip lately, what with her psychic tormenting of X-23 and Kitty, and her haughty power game with Hellion (who I was very glad to see develop a backbone).

I hope there are consequences to these actions. I hate it when team members conveniently forget about stuff like this, as the X-men completely inexplicably did with Mystique. ("oh, you killed Moira and Banshee? Welcome aboard, we need more women on this team! )

I do however like Emma a lot more when she's manipulative and twisted. Thats why I like her character. I hope the other X-men actually react in a believable fashion for once though.

Well yeah, but Mystique didn't kill Banshee...technically Vulcan did.

Yeah. Mystique only slit his throat. :D

And, really, it's not the X-Men's fault that they let Mystique in. That's Milligan's doing. You cannot make suffer the X-Men for the sins of the Milligan. >.> (Of course, I'm assuming that you're talking of the recent issues with Mystique.)

As for Astonishing 14... <3. Dialogue is definitely one of Whedon's strongest points (if not the strongest), and the text in this one is absolutely brutal and stunning. The story can go almost anywhere from here.

An earlier poster (or several) wrote, to paraphrase, that it was really crappy that the overall story really didn't move too much in this issue. Well, no, it didn't. It didn't fast-forward through seven days. A giant Sentinel didn't show up to destroy the X-Mansion. No one blew it up. That somehow makes the issue of less quality? It's the second issue of what will likely be another six-issue arc. Issue 2/6 means that it's not even the halfway point. Why does the issue have to be filled with world-pushing events? Everything written tends to follow the general idea of early content being a slow and methodical build-up, and that's exactly what this issue was.

As for the sexual issue... I don't buy into the crap that kids in turn do whatever it is they see or read. I refuse to buy into the crap that a kid goes out and murders someone because they play a Grand Theft Auto game. How does sexuality fit into this? Well, frankly, there are already more than enough avenues for kids to be exposed to sexuality without having to look in a comic book. And even then, sex really is a normal thing. We just like to cause a big fuss about it, just like we do with violence. And I agree with an earlier poster - I don't think that Marvel should have to censor its writer's creativity to police the ranks of comics readers.

I'm a proponent for comics to be taken more seriously by the "mainstream" crowd, aka those persons who do not read comics. And for that to happen, well, comics need to take a more mature stance, as they slowly have been, and start tackling more mature ideas than cartoony violence. And a scene that implies sex in a subtle manner, like the Kitty-Piotr scene... well, hey, maybe that's what's needed.

I didn't think that it was a "sexually explicit" issue at all. Most kids probably wouldn't understand that Kitty was having an orgasm. However, if people are judging Astonishing by appropriateness, I also think that MOST X-Men books wouldn't be very appropriate for children....part of why I like them is the maturity aspect.

I find this sort of thinking very, very bizarre. We've got guns and explosions and decapitations and eyes getting ripped out and missing limbs and throats getting slit and people getting flayed and etc etc etc in every corner of both Marvel and DC...but when it comes showing to a loving young couple, all if a sudden it's too graphic for the kiddies?

I mean, come on, that's just backwards.

If our young, impressionable youth can handle Wing's mangled corpse getting up and killing people in the last arc, then they can handle some PG-13 humor.

word.

Ok, so in a diferent subject, does anyone has any idea of who is the x-man that aparently is going to destroy the world?

My money is on Hisako.

To me, there is only one member of Astonishing that could do it and that would be Scott.

Psylocks teke can shatter mountains, why not a planet. *feel the sarcasm*

I'm thinking it's going to be Kitty. Everything in Astonishing seems to come back to Kitty sooner or later...

Also, completely random: I'm wondering if Hank isn't seeing Cassandra Nova for the same reason Scott's seeing stuff. Based on what she did to him in the Morrison run, Nova could very well represent Hank's deepest fear... could Emma be "taking apart" the team that way, one at a time?

Will it be mentioned again? Or is it not sicne that was couple arcs ago?

Lockheed! :p

Its taken a couple reads as the initial read it cos it s new and I've been waiting for it so it takes me two minutes doesnt open it up enough - but I've gotten the hang of what Emma has done, where things fit in etc. I'm hoping it IS just a break him down to make him strong without the hold ups and set backs that have prevented him from being an incredible leader rather than just a good one. But I could be wrong and Joss is going somewhere else with this...

I dont see Kitty as the one destroying earth, my money is on Scott too, he's been in the spotlight in almost all the Astonishing comics, i think Josh Whedon is going to put Cyke in the center of the drama (yea, more)

I don't know if there's interest enough to start a new thread ( not that I know how to do it anyway)
but is Siryn the only one who cares about the death of Banshee?

& Bringing the ones responsible to justice? storm? Hello Cyclops, Wolvie? I'm surprised they havent shown the main xpeeps who fought along side of him in mourning except a mention in passing. To forget a colleague in like 1 issue wow. To me for a team that's supposed to be a family that's pretty cold.:down
scott should never forgive Kid Vulcan for that. I hate his character already...

Weadon is following up on what Morrison did and by the end of his run Scott said f**ck it I'm not going to be me any more an let go. Weadon let Scott back track on this a bit and now has Emma reminding him of what he said.

Anyway off topic but why do people hate this Emma boardline villian? Didn't she kill her Sister at the end of the Generation X run and isn't Weadon just developing her from this and not leaving it hanging??

I do like Emma borderline villain. I dont like watered down Emma who is the *****-with-the-golden-heart.

I much prefer evil, *****y, borderline psychotic, no-nonsense, f*** you if you don't like how I play the game Emma as opposed to what she's usually portrayed as (Jean sans the natural red hair and flaming pidgeon).

I don't see Kitty destroying the Breakworld or whatever, no offense to her, b/c she is great, but what is she going to do? Is she going to phase the planet into the sun? That would be cool, but Kitty is no Phoenix.

She could phase through the master computer that just so happens to control every aspect of Breakworld's civilization and weaponry, causing the planet to explode and the Breakworldians to look like idiots for having such a computer in the first place.

well none of the x-men bar jean have the raw power to destroy a whole panet.

Maybe scott fires a big massive beam into the worlds core and blows it up or something like that.
