GDT wants Perlman:

While fans speculate as to who Guilldermo del Toro will cast in At the Mountains of Madness, the writer-director can assure you of one thing:

"All I can tell you is if Ron Perlman is free, he will be in," he tells MTV. "I wrote a part for him. He read it and if everything falls in place, Ron Perlman has a role in it written specifically for him."

The actor continues to enjoy his run on Sons of Anarchy. If Perlman makes time for del Toro, he'll play "Larson, the sort of dog guy, the guy that cares for the dogs and the sled — the part of the expedition that is dog sleds," del Toro added. "It's a fantastic character. I really love him. He's sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn't care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man, and it is written specifically for him."

Read a re-cap of del Toro's TimesTalks lecture in our previous feature right here where he discusses his approach to Madness.

Yeah, figured as much. It's good he still wants Perlman in it. He is a really badass character. You can tell it was written for Perlman.

If Perlman is too busy, i'd scrap the character and do a new draft. I had a problem with him in the script in that I felt he was the guy that teetered the tone of the film to the more action/adventure side than the pure horror side. He was a fun character, but with all his humor and what not, he really helped the film feel more like Aliens than The Thing, which is what Del Toro should really pursue. The action/adventure feel really bogged down the horror aspects

I don't think there's anyway they will make the movie without those action sequences.

Just saying that's the reality of filmmaking. Look at Watchmen? They stuck in all those borderline pornographic martial arts and fight scenes that were never in the comics in order to appease the male adolescent crowd.

Yea, i realize that. There were actually enough action sequences without the character of Larson though. My problem with Larson's sequences were that they all felt out of place, while the other ones felt atleast somewhat natural given the circumstances of the characters. But whatever. Who knows what the newer drafts did. And besides, I just want the damn movie made so I can show my friends what a competent Lovecraft film looks like.

Del Toro’s confirmation about the role of Perlman for ‘Mountains Of Madness’

September 25, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Guillermo Del Toro has just gone ahead and confirmed some really exhilarating rumors regarding his horror movie, entitled At the Mountains of Madness. Ron Perlman would also join the cast, depending upon his availability.

Guillermo Del Toro expressed his adoration and adulation for Perlman. He also added that in case Ron is available, he would surely be seen in the movie. In fact Del even said that he has written a character based on Ron Perlman.

At the Mountains of Madness is based on a work from iconic horror fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft. It is a horror novella that has the similar name. It’s about a professor who leads a scientific voyage into Antarctica and soon discover some strange mountains, soon enough the horror unfolds.

Del Toro is quite psyched about Perlman’s probable character. Ron is Larson, who is a dog lover and is a part of the expedition team. Del also said that he loves Ron’s personality. He is an extremely practical guy, with zero beliefs about science, cosmology or anything mythical. The character is that of a hardcore and strong Nordic man. The character he says is written keeping him in mind.

I hope they don't get carried away with the action. This should have more of a slow, ominous, creeping pace.

''Del Toro has already started writing Trollhunters and plans on finishing it before he shoots At the Mountains of Madness.''

ok this is a problem to me. Mountain of Madness is his dream project. shouldnt he focus only and only on this project right now?
look i understand that this is how Del Toro works. i am a huge fan. but i am not naive to support him with everything.

if i would be Cameron i would told him that he needs to focus on the first big budget true horror movie that will not be about teenagers running naked through the woods. this project is more important for hollywood than some are aware. this movie must make a profit if we want similar projects.

Troll Hunters? Does that mean we'll get a WETA version of this:

I've just reread the story and are curious to see how the script (even if it's the first draft) compare to it, any fine souls here that are willing to pm me the script? :)

I don't think DelToro would have much trouble in working on two movies at a time. ATMA's is a slow project, I would really need to focus my mind on other stuff while doing it

Que?

Del Toro is going to be on Craig Ferguson in a little while, this should be interesting because Ferguson is a Lovecraft fan. Hopefully they will talk about the movie.

"We are both writing chapters. Chuck has 100 pages so far. I’ve done 70. But I’m not halfway through my process and I won’t be done with my side until the week before we start At the Mountains of Madness. I’m still hoping to shoot in June. We still have a big budget presentation for Universal, but I’m really hopeful. The stuff looks just great.”

^He really does have exactly the right approach to this.

Damn, sort of hard to make out what he's saying with the ****** background sound.
