At the Mountains of Madness - Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project!

Y'know, I actually met Guillermo del Toro once at a convention a few years ago. REALLY awesome guy. Very enthusiastic, too. You guys would like him personality-wise. Just as good with fans as he is with his work.

GDT's description of the Shoggoth sounds AMAZING. It's spot on. As does his descriptions of the Elder Things.

I can't WAIT for this movie.

And out of any other Lovecraft works I'd like to see, is a 100% faithful adaptation of Shadow Over Innsmouth, my favorite(along with Call of Cthulhu).

Dagon came REALLY close, but took way too many liberties.

A 100% faithful movie adaptation of TSOI is possible, AND would be a good, scary movie.
Play Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It's the best adaption of TSOI I've ever experienced in any form, and it's incredibly terrifying. Don't watch any videos of it beforehand though, play it fresh and raw.

I loved every minute of that game.

Oh yeah, I own it, it's great.

Still, definitely would like to see a straight adaptation of the book.

You know, I thought if the world couldn't implode from pure concentrated awesomeness after the Sly-Bruce-Ahnuld scene in The Expendables, there was nothing that could do it.

I was wrong. If the pure concentrated awesome of a combined Chris Nolan and Guillermo Del Toro sit down Q&A can't do it, then no amount of concentrated awesomeness could possibly do it.

I'm kind of surprised that Tom Cruise would do this movie. You'd think that the Cthulhu mythos would hit a bit too close to home for him, since he himself is part of a batsh** insane alien cult.

That's right. There's some pretty dark clouds gathering over Scientology right now. FBI is investigating them for human trafficking and just now The New Yorker put up this article about Paul Haggis and scientology. So casting Tom Cruise could most likely draw too much of that attention to the movie.

:awesome:

I have no idea what this film is about no matter how much research I do. Could someone please elaborate? Is this possibly going to be an actual scary and frightening film?

Isn't Cthulhu in this too?!

Yes, Spidyfan and go to wikipedia. It's all there bro

Reading everything on Wiki made my head twist. I'll just wait until 2012 or 2013 or whenever this is planned for release.

I'd like to read this book soon, but I'm just wondering if it is heavily tied with the Cthulhu mythos? Will someone (me) who has only read The Call of Cthulhu understand it?

Yea, it's not explicitly tied to anything. The story really acts as a de-mythology of the mythos, as Lovecraft explains everything away. Cthulhu is mentioned, but not with any real importance to the narrative. So to answer your question, no, the story is not heavily tied with any of Lovecraft's other stories. Much of Lovecraft's mythos are only tied together simply by the creatures that appear. An elder thing here, a shoggoth there. But nothing by narrative that relies on being fluent with other stories.

I was wondering they were talking about a june starts when Finke's article says that GDT might film Pacific Rim instead.

EXCLUSIVE:

The green light process on At the Mountains of Madness with Universal Pictures has gone on for so long that there is now a very serious rival for director Guillermo del Toro's next film. I'm hearing that Legendary Pictures is moving fast on a project del Toro likes called Pacific Rim, a Travis Beacham-scripted PG-13 tentpole-sized project with big monsters and the creation of a new world, and that this could very well be the next film del Toro directs. That picture was developed independent of Warner Bros., under the radar by Legendary chief executives Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Del Toro has been in the loop through this process. He and Beacham almost worked together previously when the director flirted with The Killing on Carnival Row at New Line. The Legendary-del Toro relationship dates back through the eight months they put into Pacific Rim and an earlier courtship when Legendary tried to tempt del Toro to direct a Wizard of Oz project.

Universal has been balking over the $150 million budget and R rating on At the Mountains of Madness, the adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft tale that revolves around the discovery of thawing alien beings in Antarctica. This despite the fact that del Toro had Tom Cruise ready to star in the film, with James Cameron producing with Don Murphy and Susan Montfort, and Cameron godfathering the 3D process. Del Toro has delivered a stunning visual presentation that met the studio's budget specifications, but I'm told the studio is still wary about the R rating and price. It's just a very hard decision. The film is more horror than action adventure, and I'm told it would have to generate $500 million in worldwide grosses for the studio to earn its money back. That means it would have to be a Lord of the Rings or Inception kind of achievement, which is a lot to place on a film. I'm told Universal is hanging onto the film in hopes of returning to it as the next project after Pacific Rim.

It's also a tough one for del Toro. After spending several years co-writing The Hobbit and then stepping away from directing those two pictures because it looked like it would take so long to unravel MGM's fiscal mess, the director is no closer to getting back behind the camera. Ironically, The Hobbit is shooting, and he is not. The filmmaker needs to get behind the camera and the clock keeps ticking. He was suppopsed to have an answer before the end of 2010, but the process has stretched and stretched.

If this comes to pass, I'm told that del Toro would do Mountains after. But the picture isn't going to be any different than it is right now, a fully realized adaptation of the Lovecraft tale. Stay tuned.

I really hope Universal steps up and goes ahead with "At The Mountains..." I'd be incredibly pissed off if they don't. However, the good news is the possibility of del Toro, Cameron and co. taking it to another studio. If they can take it to Fox, without them dicking around with it, then by all means go for it.

Pacific Rim sounds cool and all(even kind of Lovecraftian, being how the creatures presumably come from the water. And Cthulhu DOES sleep deep under the Pacific...), but it's not what I want del Toro to tackle. He's said numerous times that he doesn't want to do a rebound film. Hopefully, he won't have to.

And thinking about it, it's even more disappointing that Universal is hesitant, considering they were the studio responsible for the first boom in American horror cinema back in the 30's. They took a huge chance with Dracula in 1931, and despite the eventual huge drop in budget in order to get it made, they still took a gamble and perhaps would have closed shop had the film tanked. It's time to be ballsy with horror again, Universal. Go for it.

Not with a 150 million price tag. As much as i want to see this movie getting made , i fully understand Universal caution.
150 million is a lot of money and despite the talent , the R rating is going to be very retricting.
Plus say what you want about GDT but the guy is nowhere near as popular or wellknown amongst the general public as say Nolan.
Is there a guarantee that James Cameron's name can draw an audience ( Sanctum anyone). Cruise has also been on a low lately.

AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA :wow:

The film has James Cameron producing. The man is responsible for the two highest grossing films of all time.

I really think Universal should take a chance.
