At the Mountains of Madness - Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project!

...And then you don't do your dream project.

That article was spot on. Sad, but spot on.

I am pissed about the movie being grounded but I also can't understand how the movie couldn't stay under 100 million and still be just fine.

Honestly I think Del Torro could make an incredible ATMoM movie for 50-80 million easily. Most Lovecraft horror isn't even shown directly, but alluded to. Sure there would need to be some money shot reveals but most of the movie wouldn't need to be effect heavy, just well written, directed, and shot.

Damn I hope this gets made somewhere. Lovecraft doesn't have much widespread appeal now, but its a goldmine of potential. One of the few untapped original horror mythologies with a large cult (no pun intended) following.

It could become an epic franchise if done correctly.

nice to see that internet fans know better how to spend money on a hollywood blockbuster then del Toro himself.

Maybe you would just love to see your lover's fully funded dream project kill the genre for the next decade?

He's an innovative filmmaker, he's stretched money before and he could do it again. Others have done it even more successfully. Saying "We must build a giant city in antartica and shoot on location for 7 months and also pay Tom Cruise 15 million dollars and I will accept no other alternatives" is not the way to get something done. Limitations breed creativity.

Oh, and wake up, Del Toro is an internet fan.

I know Rez was just making a point.
Bur do we know how high would Cruise's salary have been?

Correct! And for people like Cruise and Del Toro I really do have to wonder why the hell they sit around demanding millions of dollars in fees. I really have to hand it to George Clooney, he wanted to make some movies so he, being a multi millionare already, paid himself a dollar and then made a few ****ing movies. Does Cruise need any more money ever? No, he does not.

Wow, what was that about fanboy rage and tantrums? Take it down a notch bro.

I'm wondering how much this movie would've cost if they cut the 3D angle.

But I just wikipedia'd that **** and apparently Cruise:

$100,000,000 for War of the Worlds (took a 20% gross participation instead of an upfront salary)
* $25,000,000 + gross participations for The Last Samurai
* $25,000,000 + gross participations for Minority Report
* $25,000,000 + gross participations for Vanilla Sky
* $75,000,000 in gross participations for Mission: Impossible II
* $70,000,000 in gross participations for Mission: Impossible
* $20,000,000 for Eyes Wide Shut
* $20,000,000 + 15% gross participations for Jerry Maguire
* $15,000,000 for Interview with the Vampire
* $13,000,000 for Far and Away
* $2,000,000 for Top Gun

This is ****ING. REDICULOUS. He could bankroll this movie by himself for 200 million and not even give a ****.

Why don't you Wiki up some other top name actors? Cruise isn't the only guy who makes that kind of dough.

But he's one of the few. The system is silly and no one person should be garnering that kind of money for a project that only happened because of hundreds if not thousands of people. Especially now with studios losing their shirts. "Star Power" is not the surefire thing it used to be.. teenage girls(and thus their unfortunate guys) didn't all go see "Remember Me" just because Robert Pattinson was in it.

you are aware that in that time when Cruise got so much money he got people in the theater right?

i think today Cruise would not get so much money.

He took a cut for Knight and Day and the new Mission Impossible I hear

That is part of the reason studios tend to start going more for unknowns and B listers...they're cheap, and they've acted in some more indie/theatre genres.

"Dagon" and "Rats in the Walls" seem nice and doable to me as well.

Don't know how Rats in the Walls would extend to two hours. But it would be one badass short film!

Behind the Wall of Sleep would be a safe bet if they ever decide to make an Inception sequel.

The Call of Cthulu could work for a PG-13 summer blockbuster, and be cheaper than Mountains too.

i hope hollywood will not brake del Torro's spirit. it would start to cry. he needs to make this movie .

I hope that del Toro goes with this route since he can't do At the Mountain of Madness with a huge scale that's David Lean-esque as he wanted then adapting a short story could still turn out to be something good. I think The Lurking Fear or The Dunwich Horror would be great choices.

The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Colour Out of Space, The Whisperers in the Darkness, or The Shadow Over Innsmouth and I'll crap myself in delight. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Dunwich Horror would work especially well actually. Especially since
the good guys win.
Sutdios would appreciate that.

You know that when people have money they tend to spend it, right?

I'm still pissed this movie isn't getting made. Lovecraft is a GOLDMINE of horror and is mostly untapped. With the lack of good horror lately you would think someone would start digging into his stuff.

Unless the Ancient Ones machinations are keeping them from being made. :ninja:
