At the Mountains of Madness - Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project!

There's two copies at least in Massachusetts, one at Miskatonic and one in Harvard. One in France. One wherever "The Festival" is being held. One in New Orleans where the cops raided a Cthulu cult. And that's from my memory. In the end, who cares, I'm just being pedantic. These are some seriously amazing stories.

Which story features "The Festival"?

Has Prometheus Killed At The Mountains Of Madness?

it seems that all hope is lost as Guillermo has written a message on his official fan site that describes how Prometheus is too similar to At the Mountains of Madness.
Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical. Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end. I won't spoil it.
I have been interviewed about this lately and wanted to post my two cents about this:

Prometheus started filming a while ago- right at the time we were in pre-production on PACIFIC RIM. The title itself gave me pause- knowing that ALIEN was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella.

This time, decades later with the budget and place Ridley Scott occupied, I assumed the greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM.

The sad part is- I have been pursuing ATMOM for over a decade now- and, well, after Hellboy II two projects I dearly loved were not brought to fruition for me.

The good part is: One project did... And I am loving it and grateful for the blessings I have received.

Really? It's THAT similar?

Eh, this is all really fishy. Yeah, I can see how the concept is similar, but I don't buy it being that similar. I'm a Guillermo fan, but I don't see the point in him coming out with this statement right now. He's indirectly accusing Scott's film ripping his film off, and stealing his thunder. If I had to chose between Prometheus and At the Mountains of Madness I'd choose Prometheus any day of the week.

Truth be told Guillermo has too many projects he claims he is going to do. Stop making excuses Guillermo, and make the damn film if you want to. Keep fighting til you get the rating and budget you need.

I understand where he's coming from, but would this really be an issue in, say, ten years?

Is the concept similar? Sure. But you still have to consider the differences.

One is set in the distant future, the other eighty years in the past.
One is set on a distant planet, the other in Antarctica.
And each movie features very different kinds of aliens, with what I can only assume will be different purposes.

Similar concept, but enough differences to make each stand out on its own.

Probably not, and the way his schedule looks it would take him 10 years to get around to making it.

Plus, in ten years, AtMoM might be more affordable to make. I still think $150 million dollars is overkill for a Lovecraft adaptation, but then again I'm not a director.

I'll keep the faith alive. In the meantime, GDT, get to work on Frankenstein.

Considering what people are saying about Avatar ripping off certain movies , i'd say GDT has a point :oldrazz:

Still didn't stop Avatar from being made, nor did it stop Avatar from being one of the highest grossing movies of all time.

Not to say that AtMoM would go on to be one of the highest grossing movies of all time, mind you, but I don't think the general audience would be turned off by this film completely just because a similar concept had been done recently. Hell, the idea that [blackout]aliens created humans[/blackout] isn't exactly new, anyway.

God. Now I feel like a hypocrite. I literally just criticized Avatar a few hours go for being derivative. I just want this movie so badly :csad:. Guess I need to stop being so judgmental of Avatar now.

you look at this news from reading the book and watching Pormetheus trailers. del Toro on the other side has seen Prometheus and wrotte an adaptation for AtMoM. so he knows that its to similar based on his ideas and his designs.
its not like AtMoM had a chance being made in the next 5 years. by then he will maybe change it.

look this is his dream project and he needs to make it. if some young hack who wants fame directs AtMoM and f.. it up i will go to hollywood and kick his ass

big directors invite other big directors to watch their movie before the premiere. they can talk about movies without anyone from the press.

Eh, everything is a ripoff of something else. There are only like a handful of stories that have ever been told in history and the only way we don't realize it is because somebody changes it just enough.

Someone should sue the director/writer of Prometheus for theft of intellectual property.

I guess it comes down to just how original .....actually scratch that "fresh" some material is.
And ATMOM would've been something fresh..which can also be said of Prometheus. However when you have something so similar , it can definately work against you.

And i would've go so far to claim that Prometheus ripped off the storyline of ATMOM.
Look at Inception. When the trailers came out , Matthew Vaugh literally had to rewrite a entire sequence in X-men First Class because the scene was similar to something in Inception.

And Inception is basically a ripoff of an old Scrooge McDuck story.

Actually, according to my research that particular comic came out in 2003. Christopher Nolan had Inception in his mind for ten years before he finally got to make it. So about 1999-2000.

its del Toro's dream project. he hoped to bring a 100% original lokoing movie. now he can not. i understand. i hope he will find a new unique vision for ATMOM.

Cool! I'd love to read the article pre 2003 that has the details of Inception that were also in that particular comic. Could I please get a link??

Maybe the comic people lifted the idea from that.

It is too bad the director thinks Prometheus is too similar to film both :(

there is a big difference between an idea and the finished movie. a lot of knowns movies started very different on paper. but this is not bashing. inception is a good movie

I don't think it so much has to do with vision. It has to do with the fact that the story Del Toro wants to tell is essentially being told before him. It's a creative thing. You work so hard on something and then something similar comes out before you can get yours going. It's a discouraging thing amongst artists. Sometimes they give up on it, sometimes they push forward. As a student filmmaker, I understand Del Toro's frustrations.

Hopefully he pushes forward and makes it anyway. Otherwise, and it'll be disappointing no matter what, gimme Hellboy III or Frankenstein.
