Depends on how the scenes are in Del Toro's script. Might not have been as extravagant as some are thinking.

I don't see why any of the concepts needed to make this work couldn't be accomplished with a PG-13 rating.Lovecraft didn't need gore and cursing and sex to make his concepts work, why would Del Toro. The fact that this is moving again is excellent news.

I agree. I don't think ANYTHING Lovecraft ever wrote was R-rated. There's a difference between what is implied and imagined by your own mind as opposed to what's actually on the page or screen. I'll argue that if you removed the F-word and the nudity from The Shining, I'm not sure why it would need to be R-rated on content alone. And if you argued that tone/theme/suggestion warrants an R, The Ring would be a hard, hard R. Poltergeist was PG, for christ's sake. The Walking Dead is on basic cable and goes lightyears beyond what is acceptable in a PG-13 film. My point is, the inconsistencies in American content ratings are painfully noticeable and largely a joke. Del Toro could EASILY make the film PG-13.

The Shoggoths would probably be too creepy & extreme for PG 13, depends on how they do it though, but the way they're described in the script is something else. It's The Thing like but more f*** up in my opinion.

R-rated adaptions would probably fit the stories from his early period, the "macabre era". The "Cthulhu cycle" stories are not so much R-rated but I cannot see them adapted as big movies. I think it would be possible with AtMoM, but I think it has also the danger of becoming a very generic monster movie.

Yeah, I don't think adapting Lovecraft or Shakespeare or Poe is really going to get you big box office numbers anymore. That ship has sailed. As a result, you won't get a huge budget because the studio assumes it'll bomb, and they won't let it be rated beyond PG-13 because they want as many people in the theater as possible. Welcome to the age of the Teenage Sci-Fi Franchise (almost every movie that exists now, minus the Oscar bait in the Fourth Quarter).

Oh yeah, I've read the script and I absolutely loved it. It still gives me goosebumps whenever I read it. And the ending with the hooded figure gives you the impression of impending doom.

The big issue with adapting this story is it's influence on other films like Prometheus and The Thing. The GA probably think "Mountains" ripped off those films.

Most of the horror in Lovecraft's works come from the buildup of tension and the overbearing sense of dread. Really, save for a couple of moments in the novella, Mountains is easily doable in a PG-13 film. And those couple of moments can be filmed in such a way that the gore isn't so explicit or graphic.

We've got horror movies out nowadays sneaking away with a PG-13 rating. Can't see why this one couldn't as well.

At this point, I just want this movie made damnit. Anything to wash the taste of Pacific Rim out of my mouth.

Having just read the script, There is an exponential amount of gore added to the story. Things are gonna have to be rewritten. And believe it or not, the descriptions of the Shoggoths alone, would land this thing an R rating.
