My surprise comes from my personal experience of having to defend Superman and explain why he's awesome to just about everyone I ever talk superheroes with, as they always insist Batman is the "cool" one.

Same here, superman is very polarizing amongst people of certain age groups, I meet people who either detest or love the character, but one that will never change is that superman is one of the most iconic characters in the world.

As for batman being the cool one, well with BTAS, the dark knight trilogy and the arkham games it would be unfair for batman NOT to be the cool one.

Batman :yay: I grew up on Batman he's been my favorite hero ever since I was a little kid, I love his sidekicks, side characters, and most of all his villains. :woot:

me too. i was given a long face by my good colleagues when i invited them to go to watch MOS. they said the story is silly and boring as superman is too powerful, he can resolve everything in one click. however, months later, they agreed to go for Thor 2 without any hesitation. Thor is much cooler they said. :csad:

sf2 my friend, you......need new friends:cwink:

i mean ive always seen this kind of ying-yang approach for both Batman and Superman in terms of the perspective of the general audience, either some like the all powerful being that can fly and is strong and where people dream of becoming or some like the hero that they can relate to more with the cooler gadgets

Being a small town adopted only child from a family with pretty traditional values who moved to the big city, I always identified with Superman more myself. but I get your point.

See, I just don't find Batman "relatable" at all. He's as god-like as the rest of 'em as far as I'm concerned. Unless we're talking Dick Grayson as Batman. Him I find much more relatable than Bruce Wayne.

I love them both. But Superman will always be #1.

The thing about Superman is, it was never about the powers or beating up the bad guys. It was about saving people.

Superman represents that classic immigrant story of a man trying to fit in. He isn't a billionaire or a playboy or something cool and fancy. He is a middle class everyday man with the powers of a God. He faces everyday problems such as bullying, alienation, identity crises, and so on. But he never sacrifices his human morals and principles at any cost.

Superman's struggle is not a physical one but rather an internal one and it's a battle between ethics and morality. What he needs to do and what he should do. He inspires through hope and represents the best of humanity. He represents the best of us. A man who has so much power but doesn't want to be treated as a God but as a human who helps out using his talent and good mind, something which we are all capable of.

He saves people from any natural disaster or any event anywhere in the globe and asks for nothing back. And in return what does he get? Barely enough salary to sustain himself and his aging mom. This is a man who lost both his dad's and his species so he can't let that happen to the people of earth and will do whatever it takes to protect and save them.

Superman is all about the MIDDLE CLASS hero reaching his true potential. Something all of us are capable of!

Here's putting it simply

The only thing not relatable about Superman is his powers
The only thing relatable about Batman is his lack of powers.

For me anyway.

I like both but I prefer Batman.

^ Same. I like both heroes but do prefer Batman better. One reason is I am a fan of Gothic literature and horror. So the dark Batman mythos have always been more interesting and appealing to me from the man himself to his rogue's gallery. I think when I read Year One, Arkham Asylum and saw Batman MoTP, was when I really fell in love with the character. And then reading Batman: The Long Halloween arc sealed it for me (it's my favorite story arc as it combined Batman with one of my favorite things, halloween :D) along with many other great stories. Especially those from the Bronze age.

I agree with a lot of what you say and I am the same. I really like dark stories. For example, people keep saying that they want both the show Arrow as well as the main character Oliver Queen to lighten up but I like the show the way it is, which is dark. The Long Halloween is my favourite Batman story also (I also love Halloween just like you :funny:). I also really liked Year One, Arkham Asylum and the movie Mask of Phantasm. There are other older stories that I also really like but I am also into the new stuff. Scott Snyder is a great writer IMO and I also consider him to be one of the all-time great Batman writers.

Scott Snyder has written some pretty neat stuff. Court of Owls (even if it falters in some areas) was a pretty good read. I enjoyed the mystery and I liked how they utilized Batman's detective skill in it.

I agree, Court of the Owls was great. I also really liked Death of the Family, Zero Year and Endgame.

That is EXACTLY how I feel! And Grayson is my 2nd favorite comicbook character with Spidy rounding out the top 3.

As a child, I grew up idolizing Superman/Christopher Reeve. I watched Superman II countless times. I had ONE Superman action figure that my dad found at a mom and pop shop. That toy meant the world to me. As I got older, I related more with Batman and he became my favorite. Like a previous poster said, picking between the two is like having to choose who you love the most your mom or dad. Its a tough decision but I'm gonna go with Superman. Sorry but the boy scout do good be good character of Superman has always won me over. I just had a hard time accepting Snyder's Superman driven by angst, indecisiveness. It has grown on me though!

So I vote Superman!

I've always been more fascinated by Superman, less so as a character, but more a concept and ideal to strive for. The character struggles in mainstream media, mainly due to the greater focus in character based narrative. Though the character has had some great stories on a character level, like "All Star Superman", he's struggled in maintaining interest, due to his inherent design as a male power fantasy. Sure, every hero at their core is a power fantasy, but I feel its more overt with Superman.

That is to say, I do enjoy Batman, but on a more entertainment basis. Superman helps remind me that doing the right thing, and striving to be more than I am to keep working in this cruel world. So Superman.

Yes. Perfect. Thanks.

I've never believed a single person who has said that they love batman because he's relatable. There is nothing relatable about him. He's a billionaire, he has a butler doing everything for him. His parents were gunned down by a crime boss.in a back ally. He has a utility belt solution for every problem. He has.....relations with many hot women, he's a tall handsome man. To tell the truth I personally find the Joker far more relatable, atleast from the point of view of 'the killing joke'. He's a man broken by society and pushed into insanity. Everyone can relate to feeling that way in everyday life and the struggles that come with it.

Anyway I completely and utterly adore the character of superman. I have ever since I drew breath in this world because to me, superman is the most relatable of them all but at the same time I can also look up to him and admire him, just as you would a father or an older brother. You know their not perfect but you also see them as larger than life. Superman as batman said "Has the power to wipe out the entire human race" and yet all he wants is to help people, to find love and be loved in return and contribute to society and a better tomorrow for all mankind. Give me Superman any day of the week.

Superman he's my favourite always has been always will be. But I love Batman, I don't get when people think it's an either or thing. Same with DC and Marvel it's OK to love both.

Agreed the word relatable wasn't even a thing until the Internet. It's like when people say even as kid they thought the ending of Superman the Movie was dumb, bollocks they did.

I'm a much bigger Batman fan, but it's pleasing to see Supes performance in this poll.
