It was a poor approximation though.

It looked like a generic fake ab board was stuck under. The suit nor cavill really needed that. It was too close a throwback to the old schumacher rubber muscle suits with the ridiculously chiseled abs.
His arms don't look ANY bigger to me when he's in the suit as opposed to shirtless - yes they added in the vein and whatever to make it look more real and almost like a second skin, but it doesn't look padded to me at all.
The abs are a bit silly though, I will admit!
I don't have a problem with the concept of abs on his suit, just the exeuction. Though like I said in the movie itself you can barely make out.I hope they fix the abs for the sequel, but otherwise I'd have to say the MOS suit is my favourite Superman suit across any medium.
I think having a flat stomach might be a problem of aesthetics and would be the same problem for Superman as it is in bodybuilding. If you don't have abs and obliques, the region from the pecs to the waist seems bare. Abs add necessarily detail, they define your mid section and indicate a muscular and well developed core.
The abs on the current suit are not terrible, but they can be done slightly better to look like real muscles like the rest of the suit does.
