Essentially, Batman went to New York to investigate on the happenstance of a robot that had an NYC bum's head inside of it. Batman meets Spawn, the two kick the s**t out of each other, both of them thinking that they won the fight.

They meet up where the location of the robot was, to find a big plot to destroy a bunch of s**t. Batman begrudgedly agrees to team up with Spawn and stop a huge nuclear warhead from hitting New York.

At the end, Spawn trys to convince him that they made a good team--Batman replies by throwing a Batarang into Spawn's face.

The end.

and then instead of healing himself Spawn stitches his face together with a shiiitty old shoelace. What a bum. Does he still wear that thing?

The Batman/Spawn comics don't count in the continuity of either series. In the Spawn comics, Spawn stitched his face up because his head was blown off, or something like that, and he did it instead of healing himself because it conserved his magic- if he'd used his magic he would have drained his life, so, not such a bum idea really...
